Amazon is developing 2 Conan-related drama series, reports Deadline. One is Outrider, an event series set in late 1800s Oklahoma Indian territory, with Conan the Barbarian star Arnold Schwarzenegger attached to star and exec produce. The other is based on the Conan books by Robert E. Howard, from Ryan Condal (Colony), Miguel Sapochnik (Game of Thrones), Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale), Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.
 
Yesterday’s announcement that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films for Disney raised questions about Confederate, the alternate timeline, modern-day slavery series for HBO that was to be the team’s post-GOT project. Especially when Benioff and Weiss said of the Star Wars deal, “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

Season 2 of FX’s Legion launches Tuesday, April 3 at 10p. Drama is based on the Marvel comics about a man who believed himself to be schizophrenic, only to discover he might be the most powerful mutant the world has ever seen.
 
Let them eat….Food Network ordered 10 episodes of Vegas Cakes spin-off Dallas Cakes, and renewed Ridiculous Cakes for a 13-episode season 2. Production on both shows, part of Food Network’s Monday night baking-themed lineup, begins this month.
 
New animated series Apple & Onion debuts on Cartoon Network Friday, February 23 at 7p.

There was some good news for investors yesterday: Snap’s revenue beat Wall Street expectations for the quarter, with $285.7 million versus the $252.95 million forecast. “We ended 2017 confident that we can grow our Snapchat community and monetize our products more efficiently than ever before,” said chief executive Evan Spiegel. Stock rose nearly 20% in after-hours trading, to $16.82, close to the IPO price of $17.
 
ESPN’s stand-alone OTT service will cost $4.99/month and launch this spring on Apple iOS, Android and ChromeCast, for starters, said Disney CEO Bob Iger during the company’s earnings call yesterday. The app will be completely new, with original content; personalized scores, highlights and news; live streaming of linear networks, and incremental hours of live programming. “If anything points to what the future of ESPN looks like,” said Iger, “it will be this app.”
 
Aided by advanced TV technology, the local video advertising market should grow to $37.1 billion by 2022, from $32.6 billion in 2018, according to BIA/Kelsey. Local mobile is forecast to rise to $1.8 billion from $1.1 billion.
 
comScore has expanded its Activation solution to incorporate console gaming and OTT audience segments, including SVOD. The 21 new advanced segments assist marketers and media companies in targeting consumers with messages based on their overall streaming and console gaming intensity, as well as consumption of OTT services.

The point being? To provide a backdrop for “any party, chill-out or other activity of choice.”
 
Global content rights platform BidSlate is partnering with digital distributor Digital Media Rights for a 5-year deal across 5 films. Platforms include Amazon Prime, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, Pluto TV, TubiTV, Google Play, FandangoNow, Vudu, and more, as well as Digital Media Rights’ owned and operated OTT channels.  
 
Acorn TV will start streaming new 6-part comedy Sando, about the loose cannon CEO of a furniture chain trying to reconnect with her family, in late spring/early summer.

VIDEOS IN SHORT
 
TV One is debuting a new short form video campaign featuring Common, running throughout February. In the videos, the artist/actor/activist discusses topics related to Black history and issues affecting the African American community. The videos are part of TV One’s “Represent the Dream” Black History Month slate.
 
Season 2 of short-form web series Brothers, following a group of transgender male friends, will debut at brothersseries.com and Vimeo on Demand on Thursday, March 1. Brothers claims a stake in the ground as the first narrative series about a group of trans male friends that cast trans actors in the lead roles.
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
NBC Olympics selected BrightLine to provide the first Olympic interactive video for the Winter Games. The first creative campaign using the BrightLine platform launched as a series of NBC Olympics promos leading up to the Olympics on NBC Sports, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Android and Apple mobile operating systems. “With our partners at BrightLine we’re introducing interactive advertising and deeper, more meaningful engagement with advertising, continuing to enhance our viewers’ experiences with our programming on all platforms,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman, advertising and client partnerships, NBCUniversal. The partnership will eventually roll out across NBCUni’s full portfolio of networks.
 
Nielsen announced the launch of Nielsen Branded Integration Intel, a solution aimed at helping media owners, brands and advertisers capture, measure and evaluate the value of branded integrations. It will also offer insights into how branded integration campaigns compare to exposure via traditional TV advertising.
 
McDonald’s will serve as Platinum Sponsor for the 2018 Bounce Trumpet Awards, airing Sunday, February 11 at 9p on Bounce. Sponsorship includes the creation of the Rising Star Award Presented by McDonald’s, which will go to actress/singer/dancer Rhyon Brown (Lincoln Heights). Additional sponsors include SheaMoisture and Denny’s.
 
NBC Olympics is partnering with Uber for an in-ride video experience for U.S. riders during the Winter Games. Riders will be able to access Olympic athlete interviews and highlights, curated each day of competition; exclusive “in-car” interviews for Uber riders will feature U.S. athletes and announcers as they’re in transit to and from competition venues. Primetime coverage of the Games begins tomorrow.

Entertainment One announced new free-to-air broadcast deals for preschool superhero show PJ Masks in Brazil (TVCultura), Croatia (RTL Kockica) and Denmark (DR Ramasjang). Series debuted internationally starting in March 2016 on the Disney Junior global network.
 
Tiger Aspect Productions is producing a third season of Mr Bean the Animated Series, to air in 2019 on CITV in the UK and across international markets on Turner’s Boomerang.

RATINGS
 
NBC scored its most dominant ratings win for a non-Olympic week in people-meter history the week of January 29, aided by its biggest nightlong margins in the 30-year history of Nielsen’s sample from Sunday’s Super Bowl coverage and post-game telecast of This Is Us. With an average 23.1 million viewers, it was NBC’s most-watched in-season week in 8 years, since the Vancouver Winter Olympics, and most-watched non-Olympic week, since the 1998 Super Bowl.
 
A tip of the fedora to The Real Housewives of Atlanta, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of New Jersey and Vanderpump Rules, leading Bravo to rank #3 in primetime among all cable entertainment networks in P18-49 and P25-54 in January, the network’s highest January ranking ever in each demo. 
 
An investigation into the death in 1981 of Natalie Wood delivered CBS48 Hours its largest audience since April 2016, with 5.28 million viewers and a 1.0/3 rating among A25-54. It was Saturday’s #1 program with viewers, according to Nielsen Live+SD ratings for February 3.
 
Surrounding the release of the January jobs report and a historic market sell-off, Fox Business Network delivered 268,000 total viewers in Business Day the week of January 29. In Total Day, FBN scored 201,000 viewers.
 
With PUT levels down ahead of the February sweep, the majority of first-run syndicated strips were down from the week prior, with none of the top 15 talk show eking out an increase the week ending January 28. Live with Kelly (2.3) and Ryan and Maury (1.5) both dipped 12%. Family Feud (unchanged at 7.4) was the only game show not seeing a drop.
 
The season finale of NBC’s Better Late Than Never scored a season high 1.1 rating among A18-49, up +20% versus the week prior, and 5.3 million viewers.
 
UniMas delivered a record week performance in the current season among A18-49 and A18-34 with double-digit week-to-week audience gains during primetime among Total Viewers 2+ (+16% to 821,000), A18-49 (+32% to 381,000) and A18-34 (+37% to 160,000).
 
HGTV’s Flip or Flop Nashville averaged a .62 rating among P25-54 on Thursday, up +35% versus the time slot’s 6-week average. The show has attracted over 5 million total viewers since premiering on January 18.

IN MEMORIAM
 
Veteran character actor John Mahoney died February 4 after a brief illness. He was 77. Mahoney, a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago for 39 years, was best known to TV audiences for his role as Martin Crane on Frasier. “I’ve not known a kinder man nor more brilliant actor,” tweeted Frasier casting director Jeff Greenberg.
