Cynopsis

02/06/08

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, February 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

While Super Bowl XLII pulled in 97.5 million viewers, the Puppy Bowl IV on Animal Planet Sunday drew in 1.1 million viewers which may sound relatively, well … young, but in comparison to last year’s Puppy Bowl III, it was up by 35%.  Imagine how well it will do when it’s fifty-two!

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Opening this spring, MyNetworkTV ordered a new 13-episode, half-hour comedy, Under One Roof starring Flavor Flav. From C To The B Productions and Qtopia Entertainment, Flavor plays an ex-con who moves in with his rich, conservative brother and his uptight sister-in-law.

National music network Fuse will introduce four series to its schedule this month:

  • Fuse Rocks the Garden – live concert series at Madison Square Garden begins with the Foo Fighters on February 19 at 11p.
  • 10 Great Reasons – original 30m series with eight episodes starts February 19 at 10p. Each episode counts down the top 10 facts or myths surrounding contemporary trends in music.
  • Live Through This – half-hour series with six episodes opens February 21 at 10p. Series documents music stars that have made a comeback starting with a look at Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx.
  • Talking Metal – 30m series with six episodes begins February 22 at 12 midnight. Hard rock/heavy metal TV series based on the Talking Metal podcast on iTunes.

Food Network’s Down Home with the Neelys premiered last Saturday (11a) with 700,000 W25-54 viewers and a 1.1 rating and averaged 870,000 A25-54 viewers and a 0.8 rating.

A&E Network’s new original real-life series Crime 360 combines criminal investigations and forensic technology, escorting viewers inside real investigations using 360-degree digital photography and CGI. The one-hour series premieres March 6 at 10p and is produced by Base Productions.

To promote the network’s newest primetime series, for the first time HBO will stream the first 15 episodes of In Treatment on its website, HBO.com as well as on HBO On Demand. And if your an iTunes podcast downloader, you’ll find them there as well.  The show debuted on January 28 and stars Gabriel Byrne as a therapist, meeting with four different clients – each episode focused on a single client.  The fifth night, the therapist visits with his own therapist, played by Dianne Wiest.  All together, HBO has ordered 43 episodes.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of January 28, 2008:
NBC: 9.70 million total viewers and 2.4/9 A25-54
ABC: 9.37 million total viewers and 2.4/8 A25-54
CBS: 7.19 million total viewers and 1.9/7 A25-54

Media Storm made an eight-figure ad revenue producer agreement with DIRECTV for interactive TV and upgraded advertising applications going beyond the traditional :30 spot for Media Storm’s client advertising and promotion campaigns.

ION Media Networks, Inc. reached an affiliation deal with Massillon Cable TV, Inc. for the cable operator to offer ION’s 24-hour linear digital networks quobo and ION Life on its two systems in the Cleveland area. Massillon currently carries ION Television.

Joy Tashjian Marketing Group, LLC (JTMG) was hired as licensing agency for American Gladiators by Reveille and MGM Consumer Products. JTMG will be representing rights for the original American Gladiators TV series and the new version currently airing on NBC. Product focus will be on gaming such as interactive, hand-held board games and videogames; in addition to apparel, sporting goods, athletic equipment, food and beverage and QSR promotions.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC has ordered up six episodes of Kath and Kim from Reveille and NBC Universal Media Studios, and starring Molly Shannon and Selma Blair. This marks NBC’s first jump into series without first ordering a pilot, in keeping with Jeff Zucker’s statements recently that by skipping the expense of ordering many pilots of projects that never go forward, it allows the network to go straight to series.  The show is based on an Australian series of the same name and is about a 40-something divorced mom (Shannon) and her self-absorbed daughter.

Casting Call: A new unscripted TV series is looking for families in California or New York with a single child or children who run the household and act like little dictators. A nanny specialist will come to the home to transform the kids into polite, cooperative angels. Interested families must be legal U.S. residents and have children under 18 years old. Send an email to:
and
and submit the following information: your family’s name; address and contact info; brief description of your family and individual members especially the out of control kids and examples of their behavior and why your family would be good for the show; list the issues you would like resolved such as tantrums, bedtime, potty training, etc.; and photos of your family and your home.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Super Tuesday proved to be another watershed event in New Media with news outlets pulling out all the stops to outdo each other in the digital space. MTV’s Choose or Lose site harnessed citizen journalists, deploying “Street Teams” of bloggers who posted video clips throughout the night by using Flixwagon.com software and Nokia N95 multimedia mobile devices. WashingtonPost.com teamed with Newsweek to stream live video coverage, trying to beat the TV networks at their own game. MSNBC.com offered bloggers embeddable political widgets. YouTube borrowed tools from Google Maps. And Barack Obama got a last minute boost from “Yes We Can,’ a music video featuring an all-star cast putting the Senator’s can-do rhetoric to song.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .)

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY :    Mattel invites Creative Artists Agency (CAA) over to play, as the two ink a deal to develop entertainment-based marketing programs and content across multiple platforms (movies, TV, digital, video games etc) based on Mattel’s brands, including Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, Max Steel, UNO and Polly Pocket, among others.  Mattel, which has had great success with its Barbie DVD releases, distributed by Universal Studios Home Entertainment, recently completed a deal with Joel Silver and Warner Bros. to develop a live-action re-envisioned adaptation of its property, He-Man Masters of the Universe.  CAA also has a pact with Hasbro, which yielded success last year with the live-action Transformers movie, and then there is the upcoming live-action G.I. Joe feature (2009) and Transformers 2 (2009).  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

Is Azteca America on your radar screen?

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Central European Media Enterprises Ltd. (CME) has taken an interest in Studio 1+1, a minor one that is.  The company and its partners acquired all minority stakes in the Studio 1+1 Group of companies to own 90% of Studio 1+1 and the right to buy the remaining 10%. Currently CME holds 60% of Studio 1+1.  The deal is expected to close by the end of 2Q 2008 following regulatory approvals.  The 30% interest CME will acquire will be from Igor Kolomoisky pursuant for approximately $219.6 million.  The remaining 10%, if purchased by CME from Boris Fuchsmann and Alexander Rodnyansky, would be valued at an initial minimum price of $95.4 million in the first year, $102.3 in the second, and thereafter $109.1 million.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL

Monday, February 4, 2008 ratings were not available from Nielsen due to an “issue loading necessary reference data updates.”  We think they played hooky and went to the NY Giants Super Bowl Parade in New York City and if that’s the case, who can blame them?
