Disney Junior, the newly launched 24-hour preschool channel, reaches a distribution agreement with the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC). The new US deal with the NCTC, which serves 950+ independent cable companies, is in effect immediately and will see individual systems launch the new network over the next 90 days. Disney Junior already has distribution agreements in place with affiliates including Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Bright House Networks and Verizon.
A Squared Elxsi Entertainment (A2E2), a joint venture between A Squared Entertainment and Tata Elxsi, announces at MIPTV it is developing a mix of live action and animated content across multiple platforms and formats based on the new Stan Lee’s Mighty 7 comic series, which recently debuted at retail worldwide. Stan Lee and the Mighty 7 introduces Lee’s new group of extra terrestrial super heroes and also features Lee (creator of Spider-Man and the X-Men) alongside his new characters. The deal includes the development of transmedia content based on the new super heroes, including Strongarm, Laser Lord, High Rise and others. In addition to the production of original animated and live action programming, A2E2 will lead the global licensing program for the property, with new toys, digital and entertainment products, accessories, apparel, books and additional branded merchandise a priority. A2E2 is also showcasing several of its kid-targeted properties this week in Cannes, including the hybrid business education and adventure, animated series Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club, co-produced with Xing Xing Digital.
Mattel and the Egmont Publishing Group have partnered to create a magazine based on Mattel’s Monster High dolls in the UK. The new Monster High title joins Egmont’s other girl 7-12 targeted magazines, including We Love Pop and Barbie. Every issue of the new Monster High magazine will have a cover-mount and the first edition, available beginning this Wednesday, April 4, will have a bracelet in keeping with the property. The magazine will also include features covering areas friendships, being in school and, of course, fashion and style. The Monster High doll line is very popular in the UK at present, second only to Barbie in sales. Five million Monster High dolls have been sold in the UK.
The Joester Loria Group signs a deal with Kiddieland Toys to develop a collection of Pinkalicious ride-ons. The initial line of will feature a ride-on tricycle and scooter that will debut in fall 2012 at mass retailers. The line will then expand to mid-tier, sporting goods stores, specialty chains and online stores in spring 2013. The new Kiddieland line will join the Pinkalicious sporting goods program including girls bicycles, skateboards and protective gear from Kent and girls skates from Streetflyers available at retailers nationwide.
Discovery Communications enters into a licensing deal with Dawn Foods to create a line of ready-to-sell cakes inspired by the popular TLC series Cake Boss. Buddy Valastro, master baker/cake decorator and star of Cake Boss, worked in tandem with Dawn Foods to create a selection of celebration and dessert cakes based on his own recipes and designs featured on the show. The initial Cake Boss branded celebration cake designs will be centered around birthdays, featuring a mix of boy and girl colors, though not all the cakes in the line will be kid aimed. The first of the buttercream iced cakes will be available this summer at bakeries, grocery stores and warehouse clubs nationwide to coincide with the debut of new episodes of Cake Boss on TLC. This fall fondant iced cakes will be introduced. The ready-to-sell cakes and cupcakes will be available year round in various designs and flavors. The Dawn Foods deal for Cake Boss was brokered on behalf of Discovery Communications by Big Tent Entertainment, which is the North American licensing agent for the TLC brand. Although this partnership is a new endeavor for all parties, Dawn Foods and Valastro have a longstanding relationship. Valastro’s bakery, Carlo’s, has used Dawn Foods as a supplier of bakery ingredients for 20+ years.

This week marks Mind Candy’s Moshi Monsters‘ release of its debut album Moshi Monsters: Music Rox! in stores in the UK. It will be available digitally in the UK and online. The album will also be available worldwide to download via iTunes beginning today, April 3, 2012, and available in stores in Australia, New Zealand and the US later in the year. Written and produced in-house under the Moshi Monsters Music (www.moshimusic.com) record label and distributed by Sony Music, Moshi Monsters, Music Rox! features twelve songs, in a range of genres, from Moshi characters including The MonStars, Dr Strangeglove, Popstar Poppet, Big Bad Bill and Sweet Tooth as well as newly developed music characters, Bobbi SingSong and Zack Binspin.

Guru Studio‘s original animated series Justin Time will join the line-up on Sprout, the 24-hour preschool channel, on April 22, 2012. Sprout has acquired the first two seasons of Justin Time, which revolves around a young boy named Justin, who sets on make believe adventures through history with his imaginary friends Squidgy, a shape-shifting piece of yellow clay, and Olive, a good navigator and guide, during which they meet all sorts of characters and have lots of fun. Justin Time will be part of the recently announced new NBC Kids Saturday morning block, which will be programmed by Sprout and debuts on July 7, 2012.
The seventh season of Sisimpur, the Bangladeshi version of Sesame Street, debuts on Bangladesh Television (BTV). The new season of the Sisimpur is comprised of 26×30 new episodes and focuses on critical thinking and science to encourage young kids to discover things about the world around them and think like scientists, while continuing to address the cognitive and socio-emotional development of Bangladeshi preschoolers too. Co-produced by Dhaka-based Nayantara Communications and Sesame Workshop, Sisimpur includes segments featuring Tuktuki, Ikri and other Muppet characters, celebrity appearances, as well as animated and live action films, all of which demonstrate literacy, math, and socio-cultural skills. Sesame Workshop works with Nayantara Communications to produce Sisimpur in Bangladesh with world noted puppeteer Mostafa Monwar serving as the series’ Chief Creative Advisor. The seventh season of Sisimpur is made possible by support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Sisimpur airs on BTV and BTV World in Bangladesh. Sisimpur programs are implemented by Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and Sesame Workshop.
Gigglebiz, the popular UK live action series starring comedian Justin Fletcher in various roles and sketches, debuts this week in the US on CBeebies for the US Hispanic market. The series will air at 6p during the channel’s Playtime programming block. Additionally, the third season of Dime Dime (Show me Show me), which is hosted by Cris and Pui and encourages preschoolers to explore this environment and the world around them, also debuts this week on CBeebies at 7a.
BRB Internacional, Spain-based production and distribution company, enters into content partnership that will make 40+ hours of kid’s programming available on Kidobi‘s (www.kidobi.com) subscription-based service worldwide. Under the deal programs available via Kidobi.com in the coming weeks, include Teo (45×7), Bernard (52×3), David the Gnome (26×26), Around the World with Willy Fog (26×26) and The Mozart Band (26×26). BRB celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) sings new international sales for the tween-targeted series Really Me and My Babysitter’s a Vampire. Fresh TV produces both shows, while FME exclusively handles the worldwide (excluding Canada) TV distribution, home entertainment and brand licensing rights. Broadcasters acquiring the first two seasons of Really Me include ABC (Australia), HBO Family in Latin America, for syndication to 40 territories across the region, K SIC (Portugal), and Switchover Media (Italy). Adding to the pre-existing deal with Disney, FME, which already has a deal with Disney in place, has completed sales for My Babysitter’s A Vampire in new territories with seasons one (13×30) and two (13×30), and the TV movie (1×90), being picked up in Russia and Turkey. The TV movie has also been acquired by 10 territories across Asia including Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Indonesia.
Brazil-based TV PinGuim inks its first sale for its new sci-fi, comedy-adventure animated series Gemini8 (52×11) to Cartoon Network Latin America at MIPTV. Targeted to K6-10, the Gemini8 follows the humorous intergalactic adventures of a human boy named Marco, who is stranded on the distant planet of Gemini 8 after a young alien, Polo, creates a portal that transports Marco into his world. Together Marco and Polo work to find a way to get Marco back home to Earth. Comic books and webisodes are also available.
Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, will feature the most famous Wookiee of them all, Chewbacca (aka Chewie) in the third installment in Tom Angleberger’s bestselling Origami Yoda series, The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee. Releasing Tuesday, August 7, 2012, with a 1.3-million copy first printing, this is set to be one of the biggest kid’s book releases of the year. Fans voted through March 28, 2012, to guess which Star Wars character would appear in the next book. The marketing campaign for the new book includes national advertising, online reveals, messages to fans from author Angleberger, national publicity and more.
Alvin and the Chipmunks get a new interactive app, iMunk: Alvin and the Chipmunks (www.imunks.com), for iOS devices. Developed and produced by Bagdasarian Productions, which owns Alvin and the Chipmunks and related characters, in association with DeeTown Technologies, iMunk: Alvin and the Chipmunks features an animated Alvin playing guitar, dancing, doing flips and talking back. Users of the app can speak to Alvin and have him repeat their words in his classic Chipmunk voice. DeeTown Technologies is an affiliate of DeeTown Entertainment, which produced the music for the music for the Chipmunk feature films and accompanying soundtracks Alvin and The Chipmunks, Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, and Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.
