Cynopsis: Kids!
03/23/12

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 23, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Today marks the official launch of Disney Junior, a 24-hour channel targeted to K2-7 and their parents/caregivers, in the US. Disney Junior offers learning-centric programming designed to encourage the social and emotional development, as well as cognitive skills, of preschoolers. Coinciding with the debut of the new channel, DisneyJunior.com (www.disneyjunior.com) will also unveil its new look, which will continue to feature full episodes of series, games, activity guides, and coloring pages, among other things. Disney Junior channel debuts with initial affiliate partners including Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, Bright House Networks and Verizon, with negotiations with other affiliates underway. Later this year, Comcast subscribers will have access to WATCH Disney Junior, a live simulcast of Disney Junior across a variety of platforms and devices (computers, smart phones and tablets) both in- and out-of-the-home. WATCH Disney Junior will also offer Comcast subscribers priority access to on-demand episodes online. Disney Channel will continue to air its Disney Junior programming block (weekdays 6a-2p, weekends 6a-9a). Disney Junior has launched as its own channel in 144 countries (in 21 languages), in upwards of 67 million households. Though initially announced that Disney Junior channel would basically take over channel space from SOAPnet, it is more of a transitional type thing according to Disney. As of now SOAPnet will continue to be available and Disney is selling advertising time in this year’s upfront. All of the affiliates (listed above) will carry Disney Channel and will also continue to carry SOAPnet. So, SOAPnet will remain available for an undetermined period of time as deals are completed with distributors.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Jim Henson Company enters into an agreement China’s Nine Eyes Stone & Shanghai Animation Film Studios to co-produce the CGI 3D feature-length film Sid The Science Kid: The Movie, based on the Henson’s popular science exploration-centric TV series of the same name. The will be Henson’s first animated movie to be available in 3D and standard HD. The movie will feature guest star actor Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) as the voice quirky scientist who has designed robot tour guides of the future. The new feature is written by long-time show runner Bradley Zweig, who also serves as an executive producer. Also serving executive producing are Henson’s Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, and for Nine Eyes Stone’s, Al F. Barry. Nine Eyes Stone’s David Miller is producing. The Jim Henson Company represents worldwide rights to the movie outside of China, including all theatrical, TV, DVD and digital platforms and will showcase the project to international buyers for the feature film at MIPTV next month. As part of the financing agreement, Nine Eyes Stone & Shanghai Animation Film Studios holds the distribution rights for both the existing series and new film in the Chinese market. The Jim Henson Company is handling all ancillary distribution of the property including licensing, video and merchandising.

CBBC (UK) orders a new live-action drama series titled The Dumping Ground (13×30). The series is set in fictional children’s home The Dumping Ground, which is also featured in the CBBC dramas The Story of Tracy Beaker and Tracy Beaker Returns, both based on author Jacqueline Wilson’s Tracy Beaker novels. Like the Tracy Beaker series, The Dumping Ground will also feature Nick Sharratt’s animated illustrations. Set to begin production this June 2012 in Newcastle, Gina Cronk (Tracy Beaker Returns) will executive produce the series.

LICENSING

Lionsgate inks a multi-year licensing deal with Saban Brands for the North America home entertainment distribution rights to the newest incarnations of Saban’s action TV series Power Rangers. Under the agreement, Lionsgate is granted all DVD and Blu-ray rights, as well as multiple digital rights for the TV series Saban’s Power Rangers Samurai and Saban’s Power Rangers Super Samurai, both of which currently air on Nickelodeon. Lionsgate also picks up the distribution rights to two Power Rangers Christmas and Halloween specials, and a Power Rangers Movie special. STONE SOUP

Sesame Workshop and Planet Water, a US-based non-profit with a mission to bring clean water to disadvantaged communities around the world, teamed to launch a new education program focusing on water health and hygiene across the Asia-Pacific region yesterday in Mataram, Indonesia, simultaneous to the annual World Water Day. The program, which features popular Sesame Street’s characters, including Elmo, forms part of the Asia Water-for-Life Project collaboration between the three organizations. Targeted to kids and families, the multi-media program aims to teach kids key lessons about water health and daily hygiene, including germs and how they spread, as well as incorporating simple practices such as washing your hands into their everyday lives. Sponsored by J.P. Morgan and funded by the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, the program will be rolled-out in the Philippines, India, and Vietnam over the next few months. The initiative will be supported in local markets with public service announcements promoting the same lessons. The launch of the program follows a weeklong social media campaign focused on water hygiene messaging posted to Sesame Workshop, J.P. Morgan Community, and Planet Water’s social media sites. Planet Water is also working to set up ten Planet Water AquaTower deployments in Mataram, slated to be up and running April 10 — each AquaTower produces 10,000 liters of clean, safe drinking water per day – enough daily drinking water for up to 1,000 people.
