Musical drama series Smash received a second season renewal from NBC.  The series, produced by Universal Television in association with DreamWorks Television and Madwoman in the Attic, is NBC’s top-rated drama among A18-49 and total viewers.  Smash, airing on Mondays at 10p, is up 160% in the demo versus the network’s season average in the time period and with total viewers Smash has increased the time period by 100% (7.7 million vs. 3.9 million).

The 2011-2012 broadcast season finale dates for CBS’ primetime series have been set:

FOX is pulling its first season sitcom I Hate My Teenage Daughter altogether from its schedule.  FOX originally took the comedy off its April schedule though was still airing a couple episodes on Tuesdays.  In its place on Tuesdays starting next week, FOX will air repeats of Raising Hope. 

Romance and match-making take to the seas in Lifetime’s new docu-dating series Love for Sail debuting April 10 at 10p.  The one-hour show follows single women as they board a Norwegian Cruise Line ship looking for love while cruising in the tropics.  Lifetime ordered eight episodes of the series produced by Studio Lambert.

A new series delves into the minds of criminal investigators as they reveal what it takes to capture notorious killers in Investigation Discovery’s new series Motives & Murders, premiering April 6 at 10p.  The one-hour series with eight episodes is from Four Forces Entertainment.

Outdoor Channel revealed its second quarter programming lineup with five new series which launch next week: 4 Wheeler Off-Road Ultimate Adventure on Monday at 11p; MidwayUSA’s Choose Your Weapon opens March 28 at 730p; Major League Fishing begins March 29 at 9p; STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series debuts April 1 at 4p; followed by All Star Cast opening April 1 at 430p. 

This July, GMC TV, offering inspirational music and family entertainment is moving its headquarters to new offices in College Park, a suburb of Atlanta.  The new facility will offer more production and studio space for the network as well as operational headquarters for ASPIRE, the new cable network being launched by Magic Johnson Enterprises.  GMC’s new company base will be located near the George International Convention Center and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Original lifestyle series GoldMind, with 13 half-hours episodes was sold to WealthTV in the US.  Mentalist Haim Goldenberg offers ordinary people extraordinary experiences surrounding such themes as fears and phobias, intuition, relationships, the departed, memories and more. 

Daily syndicated court show We the People with Gloria Allred, produced and distributed by Entertainment Studios, Inc. has been renewed for seasons two and three and is presently cleared in more than 85% of the US.  The one-hour court series counts clearances among station groups including Sinclair, Newport, Tribune, Titan, Gannett, Roberts, Journal, Lin, Media General, Weigel, Nexstar, Barrington, Local TV, Bonten Media, New Age Media, Pappas, Meredith, and Comcorp.

Independent distributor, DRG made international sales for Channel 4’s hi-def factual series Time Team now in its nineteenth season produced by Videotext Communications Ltd. in association with the Picture House Television.  Australia’s ABC1 and Sweden’s Kanal 9 picked up the latest 19th season and Kanal 9 also acquired the five-part Time Team America, produced by OPB for PBS.  Furthermore, New Zealand’s The Living Channel and Foxtel’s History Channel, Australia picked up season 18; Canada’s TVO made a deal for season 17; and Finland’s Nelonen Media’s Maailma Channel picked up the franchise for the first time.  Acorn Media will handle Home Entertainment releases for Time Team seasons 17 and 18 in territories including the UK, North America and Australia. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Bell Media, a broadcaster in Canada ordered an additional 13 episodes of The L.A. Complex from Epitome Pictures, per THR.  The drama will also air in the US on The CW.  Production on the new 13-episode order will begin soon. 

Season three of PBS’ Downton Abbey chose Ed Speleers to play a footman, reports THR.  Season three has also added Cara Theobold and Lucille Sharp to play new maids as well as Matt Milne as another footman.  Previously-announced veteran actress/entertainer Shirley MacLaine will also appear in the upcoming new season.

FOX’s serial killer drama cast Maggie Grace (Lost) for a recurring role as a young doctor who is the only surviving victim of the serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy).  The killer is being tracked by an FBI investigator played by Kevin Bacon.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

Irish-born actor Ciaran Hinds (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Rome) will star opposite Sigourney Weaver in USA Network’s new original series Political Animals.  Hinds will play Bud Hammond, the once popular ex-president of the US and ex-husband of Elaine Barrish (Weaver).  The cast also includes Carla Gugino, James Wolk, Sebastian Stan and Brittany Ishibashi.  USA Network has slated a summer premiere for the six-hour series produced by Berlanti Productions and Laurence Mark Productions in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX wowed viewers in the demo Wednesday with a 5.1/15 A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, FOX won with American Idol at 4.7/15 followed by CBS’ Survivor: One World at 2.8/9.  FOX kept a steady beat with viewers during 9p with more American Idol at 5.5/15 and CBS was #2 once again, this time with Criminal Minds at 3.2/9.  Also during 9p, NBC’s new sitcom Bent debuted at 9p with a 1.0/3 and a second Bent episode at 930p delivered a 0.8/2, giving NBC a fifth place ranking for the time period.  FOX slipped in to take the 10p hour as well as American Idol spilled over with a 5.4/14 and CBS’ CSI was next at 2.6/7 and Univision’s La Que No Podia Amar was third at 1.7/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Animal Planet strengthened its development group by elevating Charlie Foley to SVP/Development.  Charlie continues to report to Marjorie Kaplan, President/GM.  Joining the development team are Kurt Tondorf and Andy Berg as VPs/Development, reporting to Charlie Foley.  Kurt comes from Optomen Productions and Andy joins from A&E/Bio.  Between Charlie, Kurt and Andy they will manage program development for Animal Planet and be responsible for the development and creation of series, stunts, specials and other programming efforts. 

Effective immediately, Princell Hair was promoted to SVP/News and Talent for the NBC Sports Group up from SVP/News Operations, Comcast Sports Group.  In his new and expanded role, Princell will manage all talent recruitment, negotiation and development for the NBC Sports Group encompassing NBC Sports, NBC Sports Network, Golf Channel and the eleven Comcast Regional Sports Networks in addition to consulting with NBC Sports Digital.  Princell will further supervise the NBC Sports Group’s newsgathering operations and news strategy.  He reports to Sam Flood, Executive Producer, NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network. 

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution upped Dan Menzel to SVP/Cable Sales up from VP/Cable Sales, a position he has held since 2009.  Dan will continue to license Warner Bros. Entertainment programming encompassing TV series, theatrical motion pictures, animation and original digital productions to pay TV, premium and basic cable networks as well as satellite services throughout the US. Congratulations Dan!

CBS Television Distribution appointed Tracey Raab as VP/Communications for its entertainment newsmagazine program Entertainment Tonight and sister show The Insider.  Before this new role, Tracey was with Twentieth Century Fox Television as Executive Director/Media Relations. 

Media and marketing agency, Media Storm named Heather Gregg as Associate Media Director to handle strategy and planning on Food Network.  Based in New York, Heather will report to Tina Tison, Managing Director/Strategic Planning. 

In his 73rd year in broadcasting, veteran sportscaster Bob Wolff has been highlighted by Guinness World Records for having the “Longest Career as a Sports Broadcaster.”  Bob, who began his professional career in 1939 working for WDNC-CBS while a freshman at Duke University in Durham, NC, recently signed a new two-year contract to remain with News 12 Long Island as a sportscaster.  News 12 Long Island is a regional 24-hour cable news TV network targeting TV homes on Long Island, New York and is considered the flagship of the News 12 Networks owned by Cablevision.
