TOP NEWS

 
Mobile advertising company Millennial Media, acquired by AOL in September, has launched a new ad product in partnership with Rentrak. Rentrak, which collects data across both satellite and cable providers, will measure TV viewers’ commercial viewership. Millennial will then use the data to target viewers on their smartphones and tablets. Advertisers will be able to hone in on specific viewers, retargeting viewers who have already seen their ads on linear TV, or even targeting viewers who have seen their competitors’ ads. “Screens are no longer used in isolation, with 70% using a mobile device while watching TV,” said Liza Blumenthal, Millennial Media’s Regional VP of Sales for the Northeast, in an email to Cynopsis Digital. “Targeting consumers who have seen a TV ad on their mobile screen maximizes the spend and brings a level of actionability.”

 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Awesomeness Films
, the feature production arm of Awesomeness TV, has inked a first-look deal with Jurassic Party, a new production company centered on young adult content. Jurassic Party is helmed by Insurgent screenwriter Brian Duffield and Red Wagon Entertainment exec Nicki Cortese. The partnership was first reported by The Wrap.
 
Tubi TV is getting a boost from some majors studios. The ad-supported streaming service, which launched in 2014, is owned by VOD application provider Adrise – and Adrise just closed a $6 million round of financing fueled by Lionsgate and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (among other companies). The two studios have also reached content deals with Tubi TV, licensing hundred of titles, such as Fargo, Crash, and American Psycho, to the streaming service. Adrise also announced that Sandy Grushow, CEO of Phase 2 Media (and former Chair of Fox Television) has joined the company’s board of directors.

VIRTUAL REALITY

 
Instagram
and virtual reality? Oh, imagine the possibilities. At the Structure conference in San Francisco yesterday, Instagram CTO Mike Krieger hinted that the company might see some use for virtual reality. He even said that the teams at Instagram and Oculus (both companies are owned by Facebook) have been discussing potential collaborations. One possibility he found exciting: Using VR to let Instagrammers explore different parts of the world.  “I’m fascinated with being able to travel the world via Instagram and just be somewhere different,” he said. “Teleport yourself somewhere else.”

ADVERTISING

 
Video editing startup Vidmob launched its new iPhone app yesterday. The app creates an online marketplace, enabling users to find professionals to edit their videos in exchange for a fee. Vidmob CEO Alex Collmer told Variety that the growth of video on Facebook makes the app useful for businesses, not just consumers. “Facebook is rapidly becoming a video platform,” he said. “[Businesses] don’t need to make a commercial. They need to make content every day.”

 

OTT + SVOD

 
Multi-platform content distributor Cinedigm took a much larger stake in CONtv, the comic con-oriented SVOD service that Cinedigm launched in partnership with Wizard World. Wizard World’s stake falls from 42.5% to 10%, while Cinedigm’s rises to 85%. Wizard World’s role will now largely involve event marketing and planning.
 
The Cyprus-based VOD service provider Vonetize announced that it will be launching its movie and TV streaming VOD service, SmartVOD, across multiple Latin American countries. The rollout begins in Brazil on November 27, with other countries to follow in 2016. Vonetize has partnered with Samsung on the rollout.

 

RESEARCH

 
The information services company Standard Media Index, which measures 80% of national media spending from U.S, took a look at ad revenue during the month of October. The company found that digital media spending rose 34% over October 2014.
 
Video analytics company Tubular Labs ranked the most watched online video brands and creators in October 2015. Some of their findings:
 
Buzzfeed’s Tasty brand climbed five spots to take the #1 cross-platform video creator spot with 1.1 billion views (global, all-device, creating original video content), a 185% increase over last month. For the first time since May 2015, Buzzfeed Video is not #1.
 
Overall
The top 100 video creators generated over 37 billion total cross-platform views in
October, up 34% from September.
 
Facebook
Food and entertainment content ruled on Facebook, with Buzzfeed properties taking 
three of the top five spots. At #2 and new to the Facebook rankings was TipHero, a
life tips site focused on food, with 745 million views in October alone.
 
Instagram
Ariana Grande
took the #1 spot on Instagram, and Demi Levato, new
To Instagram, ranked at #5.
 
YouTube
While PewDiePie ranked #1 on YouTube with 724 million views, beyond that, entertainment, music, and kids and family content creators dominated the list of top YouTube creators in October.
 
Tubular’s software generates instant cross-platform, all-device rankings by country, audience demographics, and topics. 
 
 

DIGITAL COPYRIGHTS

 
Given the right circumstances, YouTube might just pay your legal fees. Untold YouTube content creators have been victimized by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which gives companies wide-ranging latitude to send takedown notices to creators who incorporate their content into videos. Now, YouTube intends to lend legal assistance – both financial and advisory – to certain creators whom the company deems to have met the “fair use” standard. YouTube also intends to help these individuals keep their content online. So far, the company has lent its assistance to only four creators, including a pro-choice organization and UFO-sighting-debunker Constantine Guiliotis.
 
 

DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS

 
Cameron Dallas
became the latest digital star to land representation, signing with talent management firm Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Best known for his Vine output, Dallas has lately been branching out into feature film roles: He appeared in Fullscreen FilmsThe Outfield this year, as well as Awesomeness TV’s Expelled in 2014. Dallas will now find himself particularly well-covered in the representation game: In addition to BEP, he already has representation through William Morris Endeavor (WME).
 
Want to give your latest Let’s Play video Hungarian subtitles? Well, you can if you want to. YouTube is releasing new tools designed to help creators reach foreign-language speakers. Creators can now crowdsource the subtitling of videos to their audience. They can also add translated titles and descriptions to their videos, making it easier for foreign users to search for them. Finally, YouTube has launched a beta translation marketplace, enabling creators to order professional translations of their content directly from Video Manager. According to YouTube, Vice and TED are among the first creators to test the new features.
