Cynopsis Digital Webinar:
Beating the Ad Blockers

Call it the “Attack of the Ad Blockers” – display and search ads are hidden, and video ads (whether running on YouTube or an OTT network) simply won’t play. And that means lost revenue. So what are advertisers, TV programmers and publishers going to do about it? Join Cynopsis Digital on Tuesday, November 17 from 1:30-3PM EST for our latest webinar, to get tips and insights from leading figures in the ad-blocking fight.

With less than a week left, save your spot by registering now!

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Lionsgate is taking a bigger bite out of unscripted with a strategic investment in prolific reality producer Pilgrim Studios (Ghost Hunters, Fast N’ Loud). “This deal creates tremendous synergies between our companies, including the benefits of our respective relationships in the industry and the strength of Lionsgate’s worldwide distribution infrastructure,” said Pilgrim founder and CEO Craig Piligian.

The path for Jerry Bruckheimer’s straight-to-series drama Harvest isn’t so clear anymore. Spike TV is not moving forward with the 10-parter set in the world of black market body parts trade, slated to premiere in 2016. Variety says problems included finding a showrunner and casting the lead role.

Work Married, about the relationship between a state senator and his chief of staff, is in development at ABC. Comedy comes from Michael Showalter (Wet Hot American Summer) and Warner Bros. Television.

Waterman Entertainment has acquired animation house Film Roman (Alvin and the Chipmunks) from Starz Media. Film Roman will acquire, develop and produce original ideas for television, film and digital, as well as handle Waterman’s development slate.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

NBCUniversal is combining its linear and digital advertising groups, with the digital teams joining NBCU’s Lifestyle, News, Hispanic, Entertainment and Sports divisions. And under the reorg, the solutions group is expanding into client partnerships, taking a bigger role working with marketers. “Clients are asking for more direct access to us as one portfolio,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman, advertising sales and client partnerships at NBCU. The move is about strategy, not savings – layoffs aren’t involved.

National advertising last quarter was up 1.4 percent for broadcast and .8 percent for cable, according to MoffettNathanson Research, $140 million better than expected. The firm credited sports and live TV, plus price hikes due to make-good-induced tight inventory, with the growth. ABC saw the biggest boost in broadcast, up 5 percent, while Fear the Walking Dead-fueled AMC was up 40 percent. Scripps Networks Interactive saw a 5.2 percent rise, and Discovery Communications had a 4 percent lift.

MasterChef Junior is sharing a table with Olive Garden. From November 14-December 14, guests at the Italian restaurant chain can vote for their favorite appetizer developed in collaboration with the MasterChef Junior season two champ. Winner will be announced on the Fox cooking competition Friday, December 18. “Partnering with Olive Garden is a natural fit,” said Tamaya Petteway, SVP brand integrations and partnerships for Endemol Shine North America, “and allows us to bring another unique experience to MasterChef Junior fans.”

HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS

It’ll start looking a lot like Christmas on Nickelodeon Saturday, November 28, with the launch of holiday-themed premieres. First up: Henry Danger “Christmas Danger” at 8p, followed by Game Shakers “A Reggae Potato Christmas” at 8:30p. On Saturday, December 5 at 8p, hour-long Nickelodeon Ho-Ho Holiday Special features the casts of Nick shows.

Hallmark Channel’s “Countdown to Christmas” marches on with the premieres of I’m Not Ready for Christmas, starring Alicia Witt (Justified), on Saturday, November 14 at 8p and Christmas Incorporated, headed by Shenae Grimes-Beech (90210) the next night at 8p.

CBS’s coverage of the 89th Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will include performances by Justin Bieber, in a show hosted by Entertainment Tonight host Kevin Frazier and The Insider’s Keltie Knight. Let’s Make a Deal’s Wayne Brady is among the celebs dropping by to talk turkey.

Broadway at the White House, following arts students attending an all-day symposium on careers in the theater, airs on Thanksgiving at 8p. TLC special will be hosted by Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison (Glee), with special guest First Lady Michelle Obama.

Fuse also has big plans for turkey day. Or, as the net is calling it, Twerkey Day, with programming from 8a-8p that will “help keep calories at bay.” Entries include high octane movies like Feel the Noise, episodes of Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce  and music videos including Jason Derulo’s “Wiggle.” The next day, for #BlackFridayFun, Fuse is all about the money from 4p-12a, with a movie lineup with the likes of Belly and Belly 2: Millionaire Boyz Club.

Over at El Rey, the second annual “Way of the Turkey” Thanksgiving marathon of kung fu films runs from Thursday at 6a through Sunday, November 29 at 6a. Shannon Lee, daughter of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, and Dario Cueto (Lucha Underground) host select movies.

CASTING

Eliza Coupe (Happy Endings) will appear on ABC’s Quantico, playing a graduate of the FBI Academy who can “turn on the soap, sex and romance,” reports TVLine. Freshman drama airs Sundays at 10p.

Saturday Night Live alum Ana (schweddy balls) Gasteyer will play Principal McGee in Fox’s Grease Live. Musical airs Sunday, January 31.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

HBO and Sky have extended their deal to include Germany, Italy and Austria. The pact had covered the UK and Ireland. Sky has exclusive rights for first-run HBO shows in the countries until 2020.

Per a new deal, Peace Point Rights will be exclusive distributor for Muse Distribution International’s extensive catalogue in Latin America featuring new television movies.“We are expecting robust growth in the LATAM market,” said Peace president Les Tomlin.

CBS Studios International and China’s leading online video streaming service, PPTV, struck an exclusive, multi-year licensing deal for the streaming rights to CBS and Showtime series for PPTV’s 400 million users in China. “This agreement forges a new relationship with PPTV and represents another opportunity to expand our licensing business and audience reach in an important and growing international territory,” said Armando Nunez, president and CEO, CBS Global Distribution Group.
