IN THE NEWS

“Rumors of the death of pay TV are greatly exaggerated,” according to a new report from Forrester Research which found that only 6 percent of the population are cord-cutters. The not-so-good news: by 2025, half of 18-31 year-olds will have either cut their TV package or never had one. Survey of 35,000 Americans 18+ took place in April.

Fox ordered two more servings of Emmy-winning animated series Bob’s Burgers. “Six seasons in, the Belchers have become one of America’s most beloved TV families, and we are so happy to keep them in the fold for another two seasons,” said David Madden, president, entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

Not so fast, responded Media General to the New York Post’s report that it is dropping its plan to acquire Meredith for $2.4 billion, a withdrawal that would come after shareholder objections to the merger and an unsolicited $4.1 billion offer from competitor Nexstar Broadcasting Group. In a statement on Wednesday, Media General said its “board of directors continues to recommend the Meredith transaction as it is undertaking its review of the Nexstar proposal.”

Donald who? NBC’s Tonight Show added hot ticket politician John Boehner to tonight’s lineup, the House Speaker’s first late night visit since his surprise announcement that he’s retiring October 30. Jimmy Fallon has already hosted sit-downs with Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina and Gov. Chris Christie.

He really likes her. Ahead of last night’s premiere of FX’s American Horror Story: Hotel, creator Ryan Murphy tweeted an invite for one cast member to return. “Lady Gaga is so brilliant in AHS season 5 that yesterday I officially asked her to join Season 6. Say yes @ladygaga!” posted Murphy. The “Bad Romance” singer plays The Countess Elizabeth.

Jennifer Lopez has been tapped to host and perform at the 2015 American Music Awards airing Sunday, November 22 at 8p on ABC. Nominees will be announced on Good Morning America Tuesday, October 13.

NBC Owned Television Stations announced that former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts will take the reins at NBC’s1st Look starting next year. Roberts will make her debut as host Saturday, January 9, 2016 following Saturday Night Live with a special “Awards Season Kickoff” show. Current host Audrina Patridge will continue in her role through the fall 2015 season.

The Hollywood Radio and Television Society will host The State of the Industry Luncheon at the Beverly Hilton on October 15. Panelists include NBCUniversal’s Frances Berwick, ABC’s Paul Lee, Showtime’s David Nevins, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos and Lionsgate Television Group’s Sandra Stern.

TV Guide has been sold to NTVB Media, publisher of Channel Guide and TV Weekly. OpenGate had purchased the magazine for $1 in 2008 from tech company Macrovision; the sale price this time around was “much more than a dollar,” said NTVB Media chief Andy DeAngelis. The deal does not include web site TVGuide.com, which remains with CBS Interactive.

"A trusted referral is the Holy Grail of advertising." Mark Zuckerberg said it, and data backs it up – but how do you find the crucial opinion shapers who can connect target audiences to your brand? The October 29 Cynopsis webinar, The New Influencer Marketing, will show low-cost ways to identify, reach – and nurture – the power players who will share your content and encourage action. More info is here.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Sponsored content for DraftKings was yanked from ESPN after the NY Times reported that a DraftKings employee won $350,000 on rival site FanDuel using inside information. “It is a standard procedure for us to pull these kind of sponsorships and integrations when we are covering significant news, to avoid any suggestion of influence on our coverage,” said the network. DraftKings and FanDuel issued a statement saying they had “no evidence” that any of their employees had misused data.

A TV spot for Nice ‘n Easy hair color was banned by the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority. In the ad, Christina Hendricks goes from redhead to blonde (“I don’t know if blondes have more fun, but I plan to find out”). P&G stood by the product, but since the Mad Men actress had been shot first as a blonde, then as a redhead, the spot was deemed misleading. “We are disappointed in the outcome as we are confident that the color change we depicted in the TV copy is possible and achievable using our products,” said P&G. “However, we respect the final decision of the ASA and will be removing the TV copy from air effective immediately.”

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Keshet International comedy The Baker and the Beauty has been licensed to Russia, to air on CTC. Local version of the show will be produced by Yellow, Black and White.

Banijay Finland picked up Armoza Formats docu-series The Virgins. The reality show about people experiencing things for the first time has also been commissioned by Israel’s Channel 10.

DISTRIBUTION

Hulu snatched exclusive streaming rights for seasons one and two of Pivot’s Please Like Me. The comedy will be available to stream starting Sunday, October 11, ahead of the season three network launch Friday, October 16 at 10p.

The National Cable Television Cooperative and TV One  announced a multi-year distribution agreement. “Establishing this inaugural partnership with NCTC and its approximately 850 member-operators will enable us to continue to provide the critically acclaimed and entertaining content for Black adults in even more communities across the country,” said Michelle L. Rice, TV One EVP content distribution and marketing.
