Pop-Under Ad: A pop-under ad is an online ad that appears in a separate window beneath an open window. Pop-under ads are concealed until the top window is closed, resized, minimized, or moved.

TOP NEWS

YouTube just launched a new mobile app for Android – and there’s a twist: The app allows users to download videos ahead of time and then view them offline. Called YouTube Go, the new app is geared toward developing markets with spottier mobile connectivity. That’s why the app is launching in India to begin with. It’s slated for a wider launch in 2017.

The CW has launched a new channel on Roku. Intriguingly, it’s not a TV Everywhere or SVOD service. In other words, it doesn’t require users to authenticate with pay TV credentials, pay a subscription fee, or create an account. Instead, the channel simply serves up the five most recent episodes of its most popular shows. (Next month, the channel will begin featuring select live events as well.) It’s a set-up that’s pretty much unprecedented for a major TV network: easy access, no transaction required. Still, it’s not surprising that the youth-skewing CW would move to aggressively target cord-cutters. And the channel’s launch comes less than three months after the network cut a deal to deliver full seasons of its shows to Netflix once those seasons finish airing on TV. The CW plans to launch similar apps for additional connected TV devices, including Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV, in the coming days.

Facebook‘s image was bruised late last week when it admitted to tabulating video metrics in a way that artificially amplified users’ average viewing time. But now the social media giant has got some good news to tout. Facebook said that more than 60 million businesses now have their own pages. More importantly, the company says that more than four million brands are now advertising on Facebook. These numbers represent some extremely rapid growth. Facebook has added a million advertisers since March — a 33% increase in less than seven months. Moreover, a fifth of those four million advertisers are buying video ads.  "The story is basically about the movement to mobile," COO Sheryl Sandberg told USA Today.

The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) has launched the IAB Digital Media Buying and Planning Certification Program for ad buyers and planners. The offering is produced in partnership with Google and the 4A’s, and is designed to help media agencies keep up with the skills they need in the digital marketplace: creating media strategies, developing digital media plans, and executing and managing ad campaigns. The program’s test (independently administered by Pearson VUE) costs $400 for 4A’s and IAB members, and $500 for non-members.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

Fox Sports GO, the live-streaming app for Fox Sports content, has launched on Xbox One and GoogleChromecast. The app features both live sporting events and in-studio programming. It was already available for Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV.

RESEARCH

To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Below, a look at the brands that backed post-game coverage of last night’s Presidential Debate on ABC, CBS and NBC.  They are Adidas, Pfizer (with its "Before It Became a Medicine" spot highlighting its R&D efforts), Columbia Pictures (for Inferno), Celebrity Cruises and GoDaddy. The Adidas ad stands out for a good reason: It’s a gripping, beautifully shot piece set to Daisy Hamel-Buffa‘s bluesy ‘Your Future Is Not Mine, according to iSpot.tv

MediaRadar, the ad sales intelligence company that tracks how ad dollars are spent for print, digital, mobile, and TV clients, took a look at which shows the big four networks were advertising on TV from September 1-19, 2016. They shared key findings with Cynopsis Digital:

Gender differences by network. Across the four broadcast networks, there are some surprising differences in the demographics of their most promoted shows. 80% of the Top 10 promoted shows on FOX and CBS have a lead male character, host, or announcer (8 of 10 in each). By contrast, ABC and NBC have only 20% (2 of 10 each).
Safety in Sequels. CBS was marketing its Jon Benet Ramsey biopic actively, based on the disappearance of Ramsey in 1996. Big Brother was first introduced to Dutch TV in 1997 and on CBS in 2000. NCIS launched in 2003, and that was a spin-off of JAG, starting on CBS in 1995. Hawaii Five-O debuted in 2010, which makes it a newcomer. But this was a modern reboot of the original CBS series, which began in 1968.
Innovation focus.  In contrast to its peers, FOX is launching the most new programming.This includes the daytime syndicated show Harry,The Exorcist, and  comedy Son of Zorn.

The ListenFirstTelevision Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. The metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

Online video analytics company Tubular Labs announced a new hire. Matt Hunter will oversee Tubular’s product team as Chief Product Officer. He most recently served a EVP of Product at app analytics company App Annie.

Netflix content chief Ted Sarandos has joined Spotify‘s board of directors. The move isn’t a bad idea for Spotify: It comes just as the streaming music service is beginning to heavily increase its video content. In addition to widely employing video ads, Spotify has recently greenlit a number of music-oriented short-form original video series, including the Tim Robbins-produced mockumentary series Ultimate/Ultimate.
