CYNOPSISDIGITAL
09.21.16 Good morning. It’s Wednesday September 21, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Online Profiling: Online profiling is the practice of tracking information about consumers’ interests by monitoring their movements online. It’s how advertisers, vendors, and publishers gain access to behavioral data.
AT&T and Turner announced a new multi-year, multi-platform agreement to bring Turner’s networks to DirecTV and AT&T U-verse. Under the deal, DirecTV and U-verse customers will also gain comprehensive TV Everywhere access across multiple devices and platforms. The agreement will also bring Turner networks to AT&T’s upcoming DirecTV Now and DirecTV Freeview streaming services.
Soon enough, you may be switching over to Netflix on your cable box. According to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, the company expects to make Netflix available via its X1 operating system before Thanksgiving. “Our organization has made the conscious decision that we are going to aggregate other people’s content, some of which we will sell directly and some of which we won’t,” Roberts said. He even said that Comcast’s deal with Netflix might serve as a “template” for deals with other streamers. Roberts’ remarks came at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference.

DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS
Gunpowder & Sky, the digital studio co-launched early this year by former Viacom exec Van Toffler, has acquired the content distribution company FilmBuff. Financial terms weren’t disclosed. FilmBuff, which was co-founded in 2008 by indie film sales veteran John Sloss, has been an early mover in digital film distribution. “Now we have an arm that will let us sell stuff around the world,” said Toffler of the deal. Gunpowder & Sky is also backed by Otter Media, the joint digital media venture between AT&T and the Chernin Group.
As first reported by Variety, Fox News’s Megyn Kelly is teaming up with 50 Shades of Grey producer Michael De Luca for a new digital series. The scripted series, which will run on Verizon’s go90 mobile video service, will follow five young performers having adventures on the presidential campaign trail. “Big-name politicians” are expected to make cameos, according to Variety. According to one of Variety’s sources, the series will focus more on its characters than on politics, and the show’s producers hope the series will appeal to viewers who don’t religiously follow politics. Author Scott Conroy (Sarah From Alaska) and CNN correspondent-cum-Snapchatter Peter Hamby co-created the show and wrote the pilot. Producers aim to launch the show’s first episode by Election Day.
This should surprise nobody who’s been paying attention to Netflix’s content decisions over the past two or three years: According to CFO David Wells, the streaming giant ultimately wants 50% of its offerings to come in the form of original productions. The goal is to make that a reality sooner rather than later. “We’ve been on a multiyear transition and evolution toward more of our own content,” he said. His remarks came at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference.
Time Inc. has launched LIFE VR, a new dedicated virtual reality platform. The platform features content from Time Inc.’s global brands. To start, the platform’s content includes Defying the Nazis, the VR companion to Ken Burns’ PBS doc; Fast Ride, an auto-focused experience from the Time Inc. vertical The Drive; and others. LIFE VR launches a free, stand-alone app for Android and iOS. The LIFE VR brand will also make 360-degree video content available across Time Inc. websites, and at Time.com/LifeVR and TheDrive.com. Time Inc. says that it plans to launch a larger 360-degree video initiative later this fall.
Two of the oldest presidential candidates in American history will now find it a little easier to make their case to a younger audience. In a deal with ABC News, Facebook has gained live-streaming rights to this year’s presidential debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, as well as the vice-presidential debate between Tim Kaine and Mike Pence. Facebook will also feature content before and after the debates: The original series Strait Talk, hosted by ABC News contributors Matthew Dowd and LZ Granderson, will air before the debates. Additional coverage from anchors Dan Harris, Granderson, and Amna Nawaz will run through the completion of the debates.
RESEARCH
Ah, that long-hoped-for moment when the ‘m’ becomes a ‘b.’ According to a new report from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), paid music streaming became a billion-dollar industry in the first half of 2016, generating over $1 billion in revenue and accounting for 30% of all music industry revenue. The trade group says that paid streaming grew 112 percent year-over-year. When you incorporate other forms of streaming, such as ad-supported platforms like YouTube, the number grows from 30% to 47%. (Permanent downloads, which declined 17 percent year-over-year, account for 31%, while physical recordings like CDs and vinyl now account for 20%.) One highly significant tidbit from the report: Recorded music retail revenues grew 8.1 percent YOY. Over the last twenty years, decline has been the trend. The explosion in paid streaming has been spearheaded by a tiny number of services, with Spotify and Apple Music leading the vanguard. Pandora, which already offers a paid radio-streaming service, intends to roll out its own on-demand music service by the end of the year.
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement toListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
Streaming Series (9/12/16 – 9/18/16)
Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.
To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Below, a look at the brands that backed the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards.
“If your show doesn’t have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home now.”
“That was Jimmy Kimmel’s sound advice for nominees in the audience at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards at the start of the show (not that anybody listened), and, of course, both Game of Thrones and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story ended up grabbing a bunch of shiny hardware. But what about the winners among the marketers that backed TV’s annual self-lovefest? The night’s top 5 buzziest brands of the night were Cigna, Apple (for Apple Music), Apple again (for the iPhone 7), Amazon and M&Ms. All were propelled by great creative, such as Cigna’s fun ‘TV Doctors of America’ ad starring Patrick Dempsey, Donald Faison and other thespians who have played docs on TV, and Apple Music’s James Corden spot, in which he momentarily appeared in drag as all five Spice Girls.” -iSpot.tv
PBS has named Ira Rubenstein as its first Chief Digital and Marketing Officer. In the newly created position, Rubenstein will focus on acquiring, retaining, and engaging digital audiences. Rubinstein has been with PBS since 2014. He previously served as SVP and GM of PBS Digital. At the same time, PBS has named Kenji Thielstrom, previously of DG Entertainment, as VP of Creative Services.
