Angelina Jolie will direct an original drama for Netflix, available for subscribers in fall 2016. The movie will be an adaptation of Loung Ung‘s memoir First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers. “It is a dream to be able to adapt this book for the screen, and I’m honored to work alongside Loung and filmmaker Rithy Panh,” Jolie told The Hollywood Reporter. Her Cambodian-born son, Maddox, will be involved in the film’s production.
 
Billy Bob Thornton will star in upcoming Amazon original drama The Trial. The new show from David E. Kelley (The Practice) marks Amazon Instant Video’s first straight-to-series order.
 
Larry King’s digital network Ora TV picked up YouTube’s Rubin Report. The talk show will join political shows PoliticKING with Larry King and Jesse Ventura‘s Off The Grid on Ora TV. Rubin Report, boasting 81,000 subscribers and two million monthly views on its YT channel, originated on The Young Turks YouTube network. 
 
Univision
unveiled its new digital influencer program, Univision Creator Network, at VidCon last week. The net has signed creators from Vine and YouTube who collectively bring in 118 million video views per month. In return, the creators will be provided access to a community to collaborate on programming, video resources and advertising revenue options.

 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Otter media, the collaboration from AT+T and the Chernin Group, invested an undisclosed amount in digital film studio Supergravity Pictures. Supergravity will expand staff and add more film projects. Otter Media owns Fullscreen (with RoosterTeeth), Crunchyroll and Creative Bug.
 
Splash Entertainment
signed digital distribution deals with Hulu, Urania and Mobibase for its children’s programming, including Chloe’s Closet, Dive Olly Dive and Hero: 108. “These deals exemplify the ever-expanding landscape and opportunities in the entertainment arena today, especially for kids,” said Mevelyn Noriega, President of Distribution for Splash.
 

 
CONTENT MEDIA
 

CNBC Digital posted its best June ever with 19.2 million uniques, up 55 percent year-over-year. In addition, its unique video volume reached seven million in June, up 126 percent compared to last year (June 2015 comScore Video Metrix, US, Content Videos).

 
 
OTT + SVOD
 

Starz added its Encore Play TV Everywhere app to the Amazon Fire TV and the Fire TV Stick. The Starz Play app launched on the same devices last month; both are available on additional platforms such as Xbox consoles and iOS devices.
 
Start-up streaming TV platform KlowdTV added a global news package and an entertainment package to its offerings. After a $3.99/month base “delivery” fee, KlowdTV subscribers can add the new packages for an extra $2.99 each. The news group includes networks Bloomberg TV and Sky News International, among other nets, while YouToo America and AWE TV are among the entertainment options. “We are empowering consumers to give them the freedom to select among small inexpensive packages of networks without harsh long term contracts or unwanted channels lumped together in a ‘base’ package,” said Michael Grams, Co-Founder of KlowdTV.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS
 

At VidCon last week, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki rolled out a mobile app redesign for the platform and announced new YouTube Spaces opening in Mumbai and Toronto. The app will now support 360-degree 3D video, video editing tools, vertical video playback and a way for users to opt in to the channel’s notifications.

Cynopsis sat down with SpotXchange’s Allen Klosowski, Vice President of Mobile and Connected Devices, to discuss mobile video advertising. The company recently secured a partnership with TV Insider to programmatically sell its video library, including the E.W. Scripps Company’s Newsy.
 
What are clients’ concerns regarding their mobile video strategies?
One of the biggest concerns we hear from publishers is anxiety related to the moves of the largest video advertising platforms who are building ecosystems that compete directly with their publishers, such as Google, Apple and Facebook. Each of these companies is trying to use their scale as a platform to disintermediate the audience, advertiser, and data from the companies that are actually producing the video content. All of these platforms are using data limitations and new distribution methods in mobile as one of their main leverage points with publishers because user attribution is intrinsically more difficult.
 
Digital display makes up 28 percent of digital advertising, and Facebook gets more digital display ads than anyone, 24 percent of all digital display and 37 percent of mobile display. How big a role do you see social networks playing in the success of mobile advertising in the future?
Facebook has had an early mover advantage in this space due to this data pool, but there are very compelling open alternatives to these locked-in ecosystems that have been coming to market in the past 12 months that will start to erode their initial advantage. When mobile really has its moment is when it’s embraced by traditional brand advertisers for segments like automotive, politics and consumer goods as a medium considered on par with television and other more traditional channels. This is what has started to change over the past year, and we’ve seen brands increase their mobile spends with SpotXchange publishers by a factor of 800 percent. We still think there is tremendous value based around premium content with pre-roll/ mid-roll inventory that engages audience in a visceral way to really convey brand messaging.
 
What is the biggest benefit to buying into mobile advertising right now?
One of the biggest misconceptions about mobile is the "small screen.” If you do the math, you will see that mobile phones, particularly phablets, and definitely tablets, have more visual real estate with a user than a television. If you take an iPhone 6 and hold it up where you would normally have it on an airplane to watch video, then compare that to the TV across the room, the mobile phone is most times taking up more visual real estate than the television. Also, Sizmek came out with a study this year that shows viewability of mobile ads is higher than that of desktop ads.
