ABC Family launched a summer sampling strategy yesterday that will make all the net’s new summer series available for sampling across digital, social and physical platforms. “We are eventizing the entire summer and offering a massive sampling campaign to showcase our new shows,” said Nigel Cox-Hagan, SVP marketing, creative and branding. Digital premieres on EW.com (Stitchers), HRC.org (Becoming Us), Facebook (Kevin From Work) and Tumblr (Job or No Job, Next Step Realty, Monica the Medium and Startup U) are part of the game plan.

Turner Classic Movies and Ball State University are collaborating on an online film noir course. The free nine-week class, designed in part with TCM’s “Summer of Darkness” programming event, launches on educational platform Canvas Network June 1. “TCM at its core is about context, curation and connections,” said Jennifer Dorian, network GM.  “By working with Ball State on this online course we are able to engage with our passionate film audience in another exciting and new way.”

Turner has extended its deal to broadcast the American Film Institute’s annual AFI Lifetime Achievement Award gala tribute on TNT or TBS through 2018, with encores on Turner Movie Classics. This year’s event, honoring Steve Martin, takes place June 4 for a special premiering Saturday, June 13 at 10p on TBS.

Rose Byrne, Cheryl Burke, Jeff Dye and SNL cast members Jay Pharoah, Colin Jost and Michael Che join the dozens of celebs pitching in for NBC’s Red Nose Day airing 8p-11p on Thursday, May 21. “Fun-raising” effort earns money to lift children out of poverty.

Seth MacFarlane, the brains behind Family Guy and Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey will receive the Critic’s Choice Louis XIII Genius Award, for demonstrating excellence in the television arts this year. NBC 4 New York, Telemundo 47 and the New York Giants are teaming for the third annual Health & Fitness Expo, presented by Quest Diagnostics. The free, open-to-the-public health events will be held at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28 from 10a-3p.

Hallmark Channel is adapting “The Beach House,” by Mary Alice Monroe, for a TV-movie premiering in 2016. Andie McDowell, star of the net’s Cedar Cove, returning for season three Saturday, July 18, has the lead.

HBO put in development a miniseries written by John Sayles (Lone Star) about Bass Reeves, who escaped from slavery to become a legendary lawman. Project comes from Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment.

Nominations for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced Thursday, December 10. Ceremony airs Sunday, January 10 at 8p on NBC.

Comedian Chuck Nice hosts a Memorial Day marathon of Quantum Leap starting at 6a on Cozi TV, with an assist from astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson (Cosmic Queries). The time travel drama then airs Sundays in June (except Father’s Day) from 1-5p.

NEW SERIES

BET’s summer slate includes new series Desean Jackson: The Home Team (wt), a reality show about the Washington Redskins’ wide receiver, from Rogue Atlas Productions in association with Lionsgate Television, launching Tuesday, June 30 at 10p. A reboot of hidden camera series Punk’d premieres Tuesday, August 18 at 10:30p.

Morning show Expresso, the first series to air live on The Africa Channel, debuts Monday, July 13. Lifetstyle show will air weekdays from 6a-8:30p, with a repeat at 9a.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

E.W. Scripps is launching Katz Broadcasting’s Grit and Escape in multiple markets, and expand its distribution of LAFF. The deal makes Grit available in 93 million homes, Escape in 70 million and LAFF in 64 million.

Alfred Haber Television nabbed exclusive free-to-air international television rights for Nat Geo’s Wicked Tuna, and has secured sales with RTL in Germany and RMC Decouverte in France.

ADVERTISING

The Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau, formed in 1980, has been replaced by the Video Advertising Bureau, a trade association made up of 110 broadcast and cable nets, as well as the 11 largest MVPDs. Its mission: to serve as the resource for advertisers for research and insight into video advertising. “Our industry is changing rapidly; however, one constant is the unquestionable power of television to reach consumers with advertiser messaging,” said VAB co-chairman and Discovery ad sales president Joe Abruzzese. “By broadcasters, cable networks and distributors coming together in this unprecedented way, VAB members will share expertise and insights, put forward original research and push toward a common goal of elevating television’s leadership in driving product sales and brand affinity for clients.”

With the Billboard Awards, ABC had its best Sunday showing in viewers and young adults (Oscars excepted) since November, according to early Nielsens. America’s Funniest Home Videos was up 10 percent in total viewers, to 6.4 million, and steady among A18-49), while the music awards delivered 11.1 million viewers (a 14-year high) and 3.7/12 in the demo (12-year high).

Opposite ABC’s Taylor Swift-fest, CBS’s I Love Lucy special scored .9 among A18-49, ahead of two-hour, canceled Battle Creek, down two tenths to .6 in the demo. NBC’s A.D.: The Bible Continues and American Odyssey hit series lows with .8 and .4, respectively, among A18-49.
