NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

The WWE is putting Facebook in the ring as its exclusive social network hub for fans of WrestleMania. Per the deal, WWE will provide match highlights, interviews, behind-the-scenes commentary and training videos as well as encourage fans to tune-in to its platform on FB. The social net has a non-exclusive deal with the NFL that offers additional content and video highlights.

HLN app Keywords will make the jump to TV as the network’s first game show. Hosted by 1992 Olympic gold medalist Summer Sanders, the five-episode weekly series tests contestants’ internet knowledge by providing up to five keyword clues and challenging them to guess the search term. The app will be integrated into the show for users to play along as they watch. Premiere is Tuesday, March 31 at 10p ET.

Tonight’s premiere of Comedy Central’s Roast of Justin Bieber will also be available in an uncensored version on the network’s TV Everywhere app on Tuesday, March 31. App users can view the special once they authenticate their pay-TV provider. The #BieberRoast airs at 10p ET on Comedy Central.

ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS

 
Google is expected to bring back its Google Preferred advertising program at its 2015 IAB NewFronts event on April 29. Google Preferred provides inventory on the top 5 percent of all YouTube channels for buyers who purchase in advance. To get people excited, Google released the results of last year’s program:
–      Brands that used Google Preferred saw an 80 percent increase in ad recall and a 17 percent increase in brand awareness.
–      YouTube creators who were selected to participate in the program increased their revenue by 70 percent year over year, compared to a 50 percent year over year increase for those who were not.
 
Video advertising and publisher platform Teads announced a new integration with Turn, a digital hub for marketers. Advertisers using Turn’s platform will be able to programmatically buy and analyze outstream video campaigns across Teads’ inventory of partners such as Reuters, Forbes, The Washington Post, The Guardian and Nikkei. Outstream video ads sit outside of a video player on order to add more video ad inventory for publishers.

5 MINUTES WITH… Maker Studio’s Jason Krebs

 
Cynopsis asked Maker Studio Head of Sales Jason Krebs to discuss the current state of digital advertising, from auto-play video to the digital ad budgets. Here’s what he had to say, which is just a sliver of the larger discussion he’ll participate in next month at the Cynopsis Digital Business Summit in New York City on Thursday, April 23. What trend in the digital ad space is most interesting right now?
The appearance of auto-play video on Facebook, and the fact that it was accepted early on by advertisers. Auto-play video in a banner on a webpage is typically widely panned, but the same concept in a scrolling feed is seen as more organic to the viewing experience.

With predictions of total ad dollars expected to fall 10% for broadcast networks and 5% for cable networks this year, how do you think this will affect digital programming?
Not much. It’s important to note, this is not an “us” (digital) vs. “them” (traditional networks) game. Audiences are using multiple platforms for their content consumption needs, and advertisers are spreading their dollars across the ecosystem.

What are you asked about most frequently by agencies and brands when it comes to advertising on digital platforms?
Authenticity. How can I be authentic to the audience? Advertisers are very aware of not wanting to force marketing in a way that appears inorganic. For our business especially, which is based on a very strong connection between creator and audience, it’s highly important.

What are the biggest obstacles that multi-channel networks, Youtube and other platforms are facing today when it comes to advertising?
When you’re new, it can be hard to find your way into spending patterns that have been in place for years. However, being new is also a positive in this age of "shifting.” Marketers are always looking for something unique to give them an advantage over their competition and a stronger connection with their customers.

With ten more companies added to the NewFronts schedule, what should we watch out for at this year’s events?
Expect more happy caterers, venue owners and Uber drivers throughout the city. There’s a lot of talk about social as the thread of video. But, let’s not forget the original, dominant social platform…YouTube.
 
 

RESEARCH
 

TV Everywhere viewership is expected to hit 18 percent of all pay-TV subscribers, according to the Adobe Systems annual digital video survey. An increase from 13 percent or 13 million viewers the year prior, the study suggests that sports content such as the Winter Olympics and the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is the main reason for the gains. As to where viewers watch? Apple iPad’s ranks at the top at 29 percent of TVE viewers; Roku devices careen in at second with seven percent of viewers; Apple TV with five percent and video game consoles at two percent of viewers. Overall, Adobe found that gaming consoles and over-the-top (OTT) devices make up 16 percent of TVE authentications, and will increase to 20 percent this year
