Susan Sarandon has been cast opposite Nick Nolte in half-hour political satire Graves, produced by Lionsgate for premium net EPIX. Sarandon, who starred with Nolte in 1992’s Lorenzo’s Oil, will play a former First Lady with political ambitions. “To have two such brilliant and accomplished actors headline one of the first original series for EPIX is a dream come true,” said Kevin Beggs, chairman, Lionsgate Television Group.

IN THE NEWS

South Park landed a three-season renewal from Comedy Central, through 2019. “Nearly two decades later, South Park today remains as important and influential as any series on any platform and has become one of the most recognizable brands to ever come out of television,” said Doug Herzog, president of Viacom Music & Entertainment Group. Hulu would agree – creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who write and direct the animated series, will split 50/50 with Viacom mega dollars coming from the streaming service in a separate renewal deal. Season 19 premieres Wednesday, September 16 on Comedy.

Oxygen picked up The Prancing Elites Project for a second season, expanding from a half-hour to hour-long format. Why the extra time? “It allows us to tell more of the group’s story and explore their individual lives in a way that viewers can relate to and invest in,” Rod Aissa, EVP of original programming and development for Oxygen, tells Cynopsis. “While their professional goals were the highlights of season one, it’s their personal journeys following their passion and living their truths that viewers will be super served within season two.” All five members of the dance troupe will return. Year to date, the first season is exceeding the prior year time period by 185 percent in P18-49, 165 percent in total viewers and 192 percent among F18-34. Show airs Wednesdays at 9p.

Game show host Todd Newton (Family Game Night) and Miss USA Wisconsin 2009 Alex Wehrley have stepped in as co-hosts of the Miss USA pageant, spots left open when Thomas Roberts, Cheryl Burke, Roselyn Sanchez, Cristian de la Fuente and Jeannie Maj dropped out following Donald Trump’s derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants. Reelz, which has taken pains to distance itself from pageant co-owner Trump, picked up the show at a bargain basement price after it was dropped by NBC and Univision’s UniMas. “Hopefully we won’t get tainted by the controversy,” Reelz CEO Stan E. Hubbard tells Cynopsis. “But I think viewers are able to separate what’s political and what’s not.” As for Trump? “I’m guessing he isn’t too happy with what I’ve had to say,” says Hubbard. Show airs Sunday, July 12.

Ahead of the season three premiere of Rectify tonight at 10p, SundanceTV renewed the drama for another run. “Even in an increasingly crowded field of dramas on television, Rectify has established itself as something special,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC and SundanceTV. “Rectify has had such a huge impact in establishing SundanceTV as a home for high-quality, intelligent drama.” Season four is slated to debut in 2016.

Frequent guest host Michelle Collins (The Gossip Queens) is joining ABC’s The View full-time, as Rosie Perez bids adieu at end of season 17 to focus on acting. On Wednesday’s show, Perez said she was honored to be the ABC talker’s first Latino panelist, then added, “What the hell took you so long?” Season 18 finale airs Thursday, August 6.

Producer Spike Jones, Jr. will grab the Syd Cassyd Founders Award at the 2015 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, September 12. “He has strongly influenced the artistic direction of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and shaped it into a wonderful celebration,” explained Television Academy chairman and CEO Bruce Rosenblum. “Spike has also performed countless hours of pro-bono work, and given tremendous support to Academy and Foundation initiatives. He cares passionately about our mission to push the boundaries of television.” FXX is set to broadcast two hours’ worth of the ceremony on Saturday, September 19 at 8p and again at 10p.

Shadoe Stevens, one-time host of American Top 40, is the new voice of Antenna TV. Tribune Media’s multicast net airs in 101 markets in the U.S., reaching 77 percent of all households.

DirecTV ordered You Me Her straight to series. ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Comcast AdDelivery announced an integrated promotional content management solution for cross-channel spots used by cable television networks and other content owners, providing a single platform for cable operators and MVPDs to manage promotional content and national, regional or local media placements purchased by the content owner. The new promo workflow integrates with Comcast AdDelivery’s ad management solutions for unified delivery of “tune-in” TV spots and other promotional content into the traffic management systems used by TV networks, individual broadcast TV stations and cable operators, and supports locally inserted promotional spots.

Advertisers are still feeling good about increasing ad spends, but not quite as good as last year. Advertiser Perceptions’ Ad Optimism Index dipped to 22 this spring, versus 23 a year ago. Optimism for cable TV, on the other hand, rose to 22, versus 21 last year. A little context: in the spring of 2009, the index fell to a low -5.

Simulmedia announced the creation of SimulX, specializing in helping advertisers with little or no TV advertising experience launch campaigns. “Mobile app and gaming companies are going to be the next big verticals for the TV advertising industry,” said Dave Morgan, Simulmedia’s founder and CEO, about the categories SimulX will initially target. “No media drives app and gaming downloads, sign-ups, and usage like TV, but TV has historically lacked the kind of ROI measurement and optimization that search and social have offered.” SimulX will start by offering short, burst campaigns specifically developed for the mobile game marketer.
