Cyn opsis: Kids!

09/20/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 20, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

AOL RED is set to premiere Incubus, a new full-length horror movie, its first direct-to-download movie, beginning Halloween, October 31, 2006.  Starring Tara Red and distributed by Automatic, Incubus is a psychological thriller that will be available exclusively for 30 days for download for purchase ($7.99) or rental ($3.49).  The LA Times reports that Automatic is currently working on a deal to release the movie on DVD following the exclusive window with AOL RED.  AOL RED is AOL’s teen targeted service ( http://www.B-RED.com ).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

9 Story Entertainment is set to begin production on Futz! (26 x 3 min), its new multi-platform action/comedy for Teletoon, this December 2006.  Targeted to tweens 9-14, with the pure talent to mess stuff up in a mere 3-minutes Futz is “ready for anything but prepared for nothing.”  Episodes of Futz! will be available via TV, mobile, and the internet.  Check it out at Mipcom Jr.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will air Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Wound Up For The Round Up, on Sunday, October 1, at 8:30p.  In the episode six city kids take off for an adventure where they live the Wild West life, riding and taking care of horses, wrangling cattle, hiking, fly-fishing and the like, along the Laramie River near the Colorado-Wyoming border.

Australia’s ABC has picked up the rights to a slew of Decode Entertainment’s animated and live-action series for its ABC Kids programming block on its ABC and ABC 2 channels.

  • On the animation side the broadcaster has acquired: a second season of the Decode and Aardman Animation co-produced Planet Sketch (26 x 11 min) for air on ABC channel; for ABC 2 – Delilah & Julius, produced by Decode and Collideascope Animation and Poko (71 x 23 min) a stop-motion preschool animated series from Halifax Film Company; and for air on both ABC and ABC2 – Naughty Naughty Pets.
  • On the live-action side ABC has optioned: the second season of Radio Free Roscoe and the first season of Naturally Sadie for ABC 2.

ABC already airs a number of Decode’s series including the primetime 2D animated Bromwell High; pre-school shows Franny’s Feet and The Save-Ums!; GirlStuff/BoyStuff, King and Angela Anaconda.

Building on their current relationship, FremantleMedia Enterprises and Insight Productions Company Ltd., a Canadian indie producer, have inked a mutual first look agreement.  Under the deal FremantleMedia will have first look status with Insight Productions projects; and on the flip side Insight will have the first option for the Canadian market on new formats from FremantleMedia, which they will then produce.  Additionally, FremantleMedia and Insight will raise funds and produce projects together with other Canadian production companies and broadcast partners around the world.  Currently, Insight produces Canadian Idol for CTV on behalf of FremantleMedia, as well as a local version of the Miramax/The Weinstein Company series Project Runway, a format which FremantleMedia represents worldwide (excluding the US, UK and Italy). Insight also co-produces teen targeted drama, Falcon Beach, with Original Pictures, in conjunction with Global Television and ABC Family USA, which Fremantle International Distribution distributes internationally.

Toronto-based Lenz Entertainment‘s puppet kids show, Mr. Meaty, is scheduled to air in 90 million Nickelodeon-subscriber homes in the U.S. on September 22 at 830p.  The show follows two foam-animated 3D teenage characters Josh Redgrove and Parker Dinkleman as they go through the daily monotony of life by creating adventures at their after school job as employees of the fast food chain, Mr. Meaty.  Not without controversy, the show has already garnered an anti-sentiment from vegetarians and concerned parents. The show, which originated as a series of 17 shorts on CBC was picked up by Nickelodeon which then asked the creators and exec producer Jack Lenz to make it into a 30-minute series. The new episodes will launch on CBC on October 7 at 1130a.

On September 25, TV Land wants families across America to dine together. Between 6p and 7p next Monday evening, TV Land will preempt regular programming to promote Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Children. Airing instead will be a montage of photos of American families that have been sent in via www.FamilyTable.info set to Americana and Jazz background music.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Time Warner Global Marketing and Schwab Learning, a nonprofit program that helps families of kids with learning disabilities, have joined together in a marketing partnership to reach 100+ million kids and adults.  Under the deal Time Warner will support Schwab Learning’s consumer websites, www.SchwabLearning.org and www.SparkTop.org (for K 8-12 with learning disabilities), with a national advertising campaign and custom publishing programs through its youth and family magazine titles and websites including:

  • Time for Kids will publish and distribute an 8-page Teacher’s Guide from Schwab Learning this month to 85,000 teachers in grades 4-7.  Themed around building self-awareness and self-esteem in all students, the guide will provide educators with general information about learning disabilities, including advice on teaching to an individual student’s needs, supplemental classroom activities for educators and a take home piece.
  • This November DC Comics will publish an original custom comic book that follows Sara, who is dyslexia, and DC Comics’ Teen Titans as they work together to rescue her father from an ancient Aztec tomb.  The comic book will be inserted into 1 million DC Youth Network comic books.  In addition the comic book will tease another adventure featuring Sara and Teen Titan, Beast Boy’s next adventure, a webisode on Sparktop.org
  • The September 4th issue of People magazine featured a full-page ad for SchwabLearning.org.
  • Sports Illustrated for Kids’ print edition will include a 2-page advertorial and a custom sweepstakes for SparkTop.org.  Additionally, the magazine’s website will include banner campaigns for SparkTop.org.  This program is slated to premiere in spring 2007.
  • AOL support includes featuring Schwab Learning content, targeted at moms, kids and teachers, on AOL@School, StudyBuddy.com and KOL.

Disney has introduced Mix Max, its new kid-targeted portable digital media player, which can play feature-length movies on Disney Max Clips, plug & play memory cards that have Buena Vista Home Entertainment movie titles stored on them.  Disney Mix Max also plays digital music, T shows and photos and will be available in a range of colors when it is released this October 2006.  Priced at $99.99, the unit has a 2.2-inch color LCD display and 512MB of internal flash memory, and it supports Windows Media rights management  so that it users can download music from several music services.
