~ IN THE NEWS ~

News net Al Jazeera America announced a growth plan that includes opening new bureaus and enhancing its schedule, with additional reporting and expanded distribution. “More people and more bureaus plus our new programming will help us keep the promise we made our viewers about always providing the highest quality journalism,” said AJA president Kate O’Brian. The net reached a distribution deal with Time Warner Cable last week.

CBS is working on a 24-hour digital video service that would stream its news content onto new distribution platforms, reported Buzzfeed. No distribution agreements have been reached, and a possible launch would be months away, said the site.

The X Factor is adding another judge to the panel. Actually, a few million new judges. Viewers of the Fox singing competition can start weighing on musical acts on the first live show tonight, via The X Factor app, Twitter, Instagram and the show’s web site. Poll rankings will be shown in real time. With regular air dates scrambled by the World Series, X Factor airs tonight at 8p, and again on Thursdsay, October 31 at 8p.

Aereo‘s not going away – it’s going to Denver. The cloud-based TV service accused by broadcasters of copyright infringement said Tuesday it will launch in the Mile High City region on November 4. The Denver metro area has more than 3.4 million consumers. Aereo had said it planned to reach 22 cities in the U.S. this year. Chet Kanojia has warned it may fall a few short, but it’s clearly not throwing in the towel.

Fusion, the pop culture net targeting millennials that launched Monday, has signed major launch partners. Allstate, AT&T, Johnson & Johnson and Disney Parks are among the brands advertising on the new network. “Fusion is going to provide content that is relevant for a young, digital and diverse America,” said Catherine Sullivan, SVP of Sales for ABC News and Fusion.

According to a new Nielsen report, auto advertising decreased by 3.1 percent in the first six months of 2013, but was still a healthy 9.2 percent of ad spend. Health care expenditures grew 2.5 percent year-over-year, according the measurement company, and consumer goods grew 5.7 percent year over year, for a 21.3 percent of ad share.

Walking Dead has barely ambled into its fourth season, but AMC was quick to renew it for a fifth on Tuesday. No surprise: for its premiere earlier this month, the zombie drama delivered 20.2 million viewers Live+3 and 13.2 million A18-49, a record for a non-sports cable program. Series airs Sundays at 9p.

Sundance Channel is using an interactive digital storytelling ad campaign to promote the premiere of its new series, The Returned. Users will be able to select various scenarios to play out based on “life” or “death,” central themes in the supernatural drama, premiering Thursday, October 31 at 9p.

Cher’s on a reality show roll – on the heels of appearances on Fox‘s The X Factor and NBC‘s The Voice, the music legend will serve as a judge and perform on ABC‘s Dancing with the Stars on Monday, November 4; show airs at 8p.

Nominees were announced for the fourth annual American Country Awards, and Taylor Swift tops the list with eight. Voting has started at www.theacas.com; the Fox awards show, hosted by Trace Adkins and NASCAR’s Danica Patrick airs live Tuesday, December 10 at 8p.

Kevin Smith‘s (Chasing Amy) web series, Spoilers, has been picked up for an exclusive TV run in Canada. The second season of the movie review show, which was on Hulu for its first outing, will air on Bell Media‘s Comedy Network. Bell Media had a distribution deal with Hulu to run the first season on its Space channel.

~ COMING UP ~

The fifth season of NBC‘s The Voice will conclude with a set of two-hour live shows. On Monday, December 16 at 8p, the finalists will give the performances that will be judged by voters, followed by an episode of holiday series The Sing-Off. The next night, the Voice winner is crowned.

Nashville’s Kings of Leon and Sweden’s Icona Pop have been added to the lineup for the 2013 MTV EMAs, joining Miley Cyrus, Robin Thicke, Katy Perry and a slew of other performers for the broadcast airing Sunday, November 10 at 10p.

Rock fans see another side of Ted Nugent on Sportsman Channel tonight, when the “Cat Scratch Fever’ singer/avid deer hunter shows off his Michigan hunting retreat. Destination Whitetail airs at 8:30p and 11:30p.

History Channel is debuting American Jungle, a docu-series about groups who live off the land in Hawaii – including clans descended from island royalty, families dislocated because of tourism… and outlaws with alarming rituals. The This Is Just a Test production launches Sunday, November 10 at 10p.

~ RATINGS ~

The Voice didn’t let the World Series spoil its Monday night winning record. The NBC singing competition was even with last week, allowing the net to fend off the competition until the 10p hour with a 4.3/11 in A18-49.

ABC‘s Dancing with the Stars was fourth in the A18-49 demo on Monday, but beat the World Series in total viewers, with a 8.7/13 HH rating, versus the Fox game’s 8.1/13 average 8-10p.

Homeland wasn’t cowed by the sports competition Sunday night, either. Opposite Sunday Night Football on NBC and The World Series on Fox (not to mention AMC juggernaut Walking Dead), the Showtime drama averaged a season high 2 million viewers at 9p, a 13 percent lift week to week. With a time shift boost, the show is averaging a weekly audience of 6.7 million viewers.

The Good Witch’s Destiny, the sixth in the Hallmark Channel franchise, drew 3.9 million total viewers and a 1.3 rating in W25-54 on Saturday, making it the number one ad-supported cable program in the time period in the demo.

Investigation Discovery boasts its best October ever among HH (585,000), W25-54 (198,000) and W18-49 (155,000). In its sweet spot, W25-54, ID ranks number seven in Total Day, up six spots year to year.

Broadcast Evening News Shows  Weekly Average Ratings (week of October 21, 2013)
