~ IN THE NEWS ~

Calling rising retransmission fees “unsustainable,” DirecTV CEO Mike White told analysts yesterday that the satellite company will “continue to explore” the idea of using antennas to transmit content, a la Aereo. The U.S.’s biggest satellite provider added a more-than-expected 139,000 subscribers in the quarter, a gain likely attributable in part to the 306,000 defections Time Warner Cable suffered in the wake of its month-long CBS blackout.

Another CEO on an earnings call, Charter CommunicationsTom Rutledge, revealed the launch of the company’s first mobile streaming app Tuesday, with a lineup of more than 100 live TV channels in the home. The plan is to add VOD content and out-of-home access later.

Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs, stars of CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, will host the 40th annual People’s Choice Awards. Robin Williams, who won his first People’s Choice trophy in 1979 as Favorite Actor in a New TV Series for Mork & Mindy, was nominated the same category, for The Crazy Ones, this time around. Voting opened yesterday for show, airing Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at 9p on CBS.

Anchorman character Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), is proving a very effective pitchman for Dodge Durango. Chrysler reported a 59 percent surge in Durango auto sales after the ads – which have gotten more than seven million hits on YouTube – broke October 5. Icing on the cake? According to Automotive News, Chrysler didn’t pay Ferrell for the ads – they’re part of the promotion for his new movie, Anchorman 2, out December 20.

History will tell the greatest story ever told all over again. The Bible, the five-part mini-series that premiered in April 2013 and averaged a whopping 11.4 million viewers per episode, will encore beginning Monday, November 11 at 8p.

News net HLN has made major tweaks to its daytime lineup. Like sister net CNN, HLN has suffered in the ratings; EVP and GM Albie Hecht, who joined the net six weeks ago, described the changes in a memo to his staff, obtained by Medialite, as part of a effort to “re-position the brand.”

Rapper Pitbull (aka Armando Christian Perez) will host the 2013 American Music Awards. “He’s the perfect choice to celebrate the universal language of music,” said AMA producer Larry Klein. The Dick Clark Productions airs live from LA Sunday, November 24 at 8p on ABC.

A+E Networks continued its TV Everywhere expansion yesterday with the launch of a History Channel app, for Xbox Live Gold members in the U.S. Users can watch episodes of the net’s series, and access hundreds of videos and special features.

~ COMING UP ~

Reelz announced the premiere date for the “lost” third season of Steven Seagal Lawman. The show was yanked from A&E‘s schedule before its January 2012 premiere date, when a lawsuit (since dropped) from a former employee reportedly prompted Seagal to resign from the Arizona sheriff’s office. Today Seagal is “actively involved” in Arizona law enforcement, says Reelz; the missing season bows Thursday, January 2 at 10p.

MTV has a little something extra in store for U.S. viewers of the 2013 MTV EMAs, airing live from Amsterdam Sunday, November 10. Starting at 3p, hosts Darren Criss (Glee), rapper Cher Lloyd and Andrew Schulz (Guy Code) will break into MTV programming live with red carpet and backstage updates, then a preview of the upcoming music video from rapper Future, featuring Miley Cyrus, will kick off an expanded broadcast from NYC at 7p.

DIY Network is extending the runs of six series. House Crashers comes back for season nine on December 23. Next year, I Hate My Yard and Garage Gold return for sophomore runs in May and July, Rescue My Renovation comes back for season three and Yard Crashers for an eleventh go-round in April, and Million Dollar Contractor is back for its fourth season in October.

TVGN reality show Tequila Sisters, about a multi-generational Hispanic family, premieres Tuesday, December 10 at 8p.

ATAS officers unopposed for 2014-15 terms are chairman Bruce Rosenblum, vice chair Kevin Hamburger, second vice chair Frank Scherma, treasurer Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg and LA-area vice chair Greg Taylor. The only seat up for grabs is that of secretary Marcelino Ford, who is not eligible for another term.

Hosted by Alton Brown, Giada DeLaurentiis, Bobby Flay and Ina Garten, the event will offer real-time holiday food advice and time-saving strategies on Saturday, November 23 at 12p.

~ PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC has put in development Greta Stone, a crime drama from bestselling novelist Patricia Cornwell, reports Deadline. ABC Studios and Gross Entertainment will produce.

Science Channel has greenlit Exo-Planets (working title), a film exploring findings from the NASA Kepler Space Telescope. The Pioneer Productions project is slated for a March 2014 premiere.

The Trip to Bountiful has come full circle. Originally written for a 1953 television production by Horton Foote, the show moved to Broadway, was a 1985 film, and now an adaptation of the 2013 Broadway revival is headed for Lifetime. The play’s Cicely Tyson and Vanessa Williams will be joined by Blair Underwood (Ironside) and Keke Palmer (CrazySexyCool) in the Ostar Productions project.

The CW is developing a drama based on DC Comics hero the Hourman, says the Hollywood Reporter. The net also has a back-door pilot for DC’s The Flash, spinning off its Arrow.

Starz has put in development half-hour dramedy Hearbeats. From Universal Cable Productions and Hypnotic‘s Doug Liman and Dave Bartis, the series follows the intersecting lives of a couple that would have been perfect for each other if they’d met at the right time.

LMNO Productions (The Little Couple) has acquired the U.S. rights to NRK‘s Slow TV, which airs marathon coverage of events like a train ride or wood burning. The show, which has had record-breaking success in Norway, “is unique and hypnotic, and it has a way of mesmerizing viewers,” explained NRK head of format development Ole Hedemann.

~ RATINGS ~

Moving into live rounds on Monday, NBC‘s The Voice hit a season low 3.6 rating/9 share in A18-49, according to Nielsen’s primetime nationals. The Blacklist also dropped to a season low, with 2.9/8, but the net still handily won the demo for the night.

CBS‘s How I Met Your Mother jumped four-tenths to 3.4/9 in A18-49 Monday, enough to beat The Voice in its time period for the first time. Returning Mike & Molly earned 2.6/7, down almost 20 percent from a year ago but up 37 percent from its season finale.

Gold Rush was again the number one ad-supported cable program on Friday night  among Persons, Men and Women in 25-54, and Persons and Men 18-49, delivering an average of 3.02 million total viewers. Discovery was the top non-sports cable net among Persons and Men (24-54/18-49).

The premiere of The Thanksgiving House was the net’s second-most-watched telecast among W25-54 in 2013, with a 1.4 rating. In its time period, Saturday 8-10p, the original movie was cable’s number one in HH delivery (2,494,000).

Inside Edition got an 11 percent bump to reach a season-high 3.1. Access Hollywood had its best ratings since April (1.8), and TMZ was up 19 percent with 1.9. But it wasn’t just gossip fueling the numbers: game shows Wheel of Fortune (7.0 HH) and Jeopardy (6.1 HH) also hit season highs.

Warner Bros. talker Bethenny gained 33 percent among W25-54 the week of October 21, earning a .8 in the demo. In HH, Bethenny was second among freshman talk shows, with .9 versus 1.1 for  Sony Pictures Television‘s Queen Latifah. CTD‘s Dr. Phil took the top spot overall (again) with a 3.0.
