Cynopsis: Kids!
11.13.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 13, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

It was quite a Veteran’s Day for 24-year-old Darryl Williams, a former member of the U.S. Air Force and winner of Sprout’s Host Hunt contest. Williams made an appearance on The Sunny Side Up Show on Monday during Sprout’s “Hooray for Heroes” celebration; his “Dial Darryl” segment about the different ways preschoolers and their families interact in this digitally evolving age will launch during the three-hour programming block in January.

Hub Network is expanding its digital strategy. The net is launching two digital initiatives: a series of webisodes called Spooksville Freak Files and online adventure game Streets of Spooksville. The goal is to further engage viewers in the unfolding mystery behind its new live-action series Spooksville, which airs Saturdays at 6:30p ET/3:30 PT.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Multiplatinum group Fall Out Boy will kick off the fifth annual TeenNick HALO Awards with a live outdoor performance atop the Hollywood Palladium in LA, while teen pop star Austin Mahone will take the indoor stage during Sunday’s show, hosted and created by Nick Cannon. Also confirmed to present at the awards: Dax Shepard (Parenthood), Darren Criss (Glee) and Chloe Bennet (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

Monday, Nov. 18, marks Mickey Mouse’s 85th birthday, and Disney Channel is celebrating big. The net will debut the first-ever extended episode of the Emmy-winning Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts Monday at 8p as part of a themed day of programming. The special seven-minute cartoon, titled “Potatoland,” finds Mickey, Donald and Goofy on a road trip to Idaho to fulfill Goofy’s lifelong dream of visiting the Potatoland theme park. Mickey Mouse cartoons will air every half-hour beginning at 1:25p, leading up to the “Potatoland” premiere. The network will also share birthday messages from the stars of Austin & Ally, Dog with a Blog, Jessie and Shake It Up throughout the day.

Preschoolers can get into the holiday spirit with “Snowflake Day,” a new musical half-hour special episode of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, premiering on PBS Kids Nov. 25. The episode, about how the neighborhood comes together to celebrate Snowflake Day, introduces two songs performed by Canadian jazz singer Matt Dusk, including an original holiday-themed version of the series’ familiar opening tune.

Justin Timberlake will take the stage for ABC’s American Music Awards, his first time there as a solo artist. Also onboard for the Dick Clark Productions fan-voted trophy fest are Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and One Direction; show airs Sunday, Nov. 24, at 8p.

What do you know… PBS Kids on Wednesday, Nov. 27, will return last year’s hit The Cat In the Hat Knows a Lot About Christmas this year. The network also will air a week of holiday and winter programming from favorite series the week of Dec. 9  13, including encore presentations of Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas and Arthur’s Perfect Christmas, and themed episodes from series including Wild Kratts, Super Why! and Thomas & Friends.

ABC reality competition The Great Christmas Light Fight has families known for over-the-top holiday decorating competing for the most elaborate displays. At stake? $250,000. The FremantleMedia series airs Mondays at 9p, starting Monday, Dec. 9.

PRODUCTION NOTES

The CW is developing a drama based on DC Comics hero The Hourman, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The net also has a back-door pilot for DC’s The Flash, spinning off its Arrow.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Making nice: The Walt Disney Co. is still eating crow after Disney-owned ABC aired the now-infamous segment in which a little blond boy told Jimmy Kimmel the U.S. should fix its financial problems by killing all the people in China. According to a Bloomberg report, despite the fact that ABC sent an apology on Nov. 8, the Chinese government Monday called on the network to “respond to the Chinese community’s demand in a sincere way,” as reported by the Xinhua news agency. The timing of the “incident” isn’t great for Disney. The company plans to open its newest theme park, Shanghai Disneyland, in Shanghai in 2015. Additionally, Disney aims to open the world’s largest Disney Store, a 53,000 square-foot complex in Pudong that will include a 10,800 square foot store as well an outdoor plaza, according to Bloomberg.

As You Wish: First there was Beauty & The Beast, Aida and The Lion King. Now get ready for The Princess Bride, the stage show. Disney Theatrical Productions is collaborating with William Goldman to develop a show based on his book, then cult favorite 1987 movie. Disney’s had mixed results with its other movies-turned-musicals. Its top draw is the long-running The Lion King, which recently hit $1 billion at the box office. Next up is a theatrical adaptation of Aladdin, which opens on Broadway in 2014.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing its annual Holiday Programming Guide, which comes out on November 26 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and CynKids subscribers. If your network has holiday-themed programming airing Nov. 27- Dec. 31, please send your listings to Lynn Leahey at [email protected] no later than Nov. 18. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lynn (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

Raini Rodriguez (Austin and Ally) is starring in a new interstitial for Disney Friends for Change, Disney’s global initiative that inspires kids and their families to help people, communities and the planet. The interstitial features the Rodriguez visiting an LA workshop focused on inspiring teens to embrace leadership and take a stand against bullying.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Online channel Oznoz, which targets bilingual kids in the U.S. and Canada, is partnering with Sesame Street Workshop to introduce Sesame Street content in six languages: Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish, Persian and Arabic. Available on the web, iOS as well as streaming video and DVDs, Oznoz hones in on growing trend in bilingualism in North America. The company also has an iPad app that lets customers download video for offline viewing; the channel currently has more than 200 shows.

Behind the Netflix/Marvel Deal: Disney chief Bob Iger may recently have noted Disney is open to partnering with other digital distrib partners than Netflix, but we doubt Ted Sarandos is sweating any bullets this week. News that Disney’s Marvel unit will develop four live-action series (featuring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage) for Netflix swept through kids-biz circles like a superhero. The multiyear deal strengthens Disney’s ties to Netflix. The Mouse last year entered a deal to sell its theatrical movies to Netflix beginning in 2016. The Marvel agreement calls for a minimum of four 13-episode series to air exclusively on Netflix beginning in 2015, leading up to a miniseries based on The Defenders franchise. Disney purchased Marvel in 2009. Marvel Entertainment president Alan Fine called the deal “unparalleled in scope and size.” It also marks Marvel’s biggest foray into TV production; ABC Studios will co-produce. While there’s Marvel content aplenty coming through the Disney kids cable pipeline, when it comes to the web Disney seems to be putting some pretty large eggs in Netflix’s basket. Here’s a good reason: Broadband service company Sandvine‘s new report shows Netflix accounts for the majority of web traffic in the U.S., clocking in at 28.18 percent. Other video streaming sites like Hulu and Amazon were not even close: Amazon is at 1.48 percent, Hulu is at 1.15 percent, according to the report.

Kids spend a lot of time on devices and thrive on repeat viewing. So Disney Junior is releasing the first nine episodes of its new preschool series Sheriff Callie’s Wild West exclusively on its authenticated Watch Disney Junior app way ahead of the series’ premiere on linear TV. Network research shows that tablet use is growing fast; more than half of households with children now own a tablet, compared to 40% in 2012, according to CynKids sister pub CableFAX.

GAMES & APPS

Cupcake Digital is rolling out its second Strawberry Shortcake app, Strawberry Shortcake Berryfest Princess. Kids can immerse themselves in Berry Bitty City, as the town is prepping for the Berryfest Ball.

Here’s an interesting tactic. For those who just can’t wait for the Dec. 11 release of kart-racing game Angry Birds Go!, Rovio has released the Countdown to Angry Birds Go! App for Android, iPhone and iPad. The app provides a preview of the game, which will launch with a new line of physical toys.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Children’s channel JimJim is among four new nets international broadcaster Chello Zone and African digital entertainment provider Multi-Choice are adding this month.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

PR firm Sayles & Winnikoff Communications hired Yuri Kwon as Senior Account Executive and Michelle Lauren Addo as Account Executive. The company client base includes numerous companies, content and products in the kids and family space.
