Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 16, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Discovery US Hispanic held its upfront presentation yesterday in NYC, during which it presented its 2012-2013 programming slate including for Discovery Familia‘s daily kid-targeted lineup. Returning to Discovery Familia’ Discovery Kids programming block (6a-9p) are second seasons of Peztronauta (Fishtronaut) and Mi Amigazazo (My Big Big Friend). Peztronauta features Fishtronaut, a secret agent fish on a mission to save the environment.  A fish out of water Fishtronaut and his friends, Marina and Zeke, work together to protect the animals of EcoZoo Park. Mi Amigazazo revolves around the adventures of an energetic little boy, Yuri (6), and his big imagination. In the real world Yuri is a very shy kid, but in his imagination he is brave and adventurous. Yuri conjures up Golias, an imaginary friend who doesn’t know he’s imaginary — neither do Bongo or Vanessa. Yuri his pals and their big big friends go on adventures.

LICENSING

Texas-based NCircle Entertainment acquires the distribution rights for The Gruffalo’s Child, the follow-up to the noted animated short, The Gruffalo, produced by London-based Magic Light Pictures. The celebrity filled voiceover cast returning for The Gruffalo’s Child includes Helena Bonham Carter, Rob Brydon, James Corden, Robbie Coltrane, John Hurt and Tom Wilkinson, and welcomes Shirley Henderson as the title character.  NCircle Entertainment will release The Gruffalo’s Child on DVD on August 14, 2012. The Gruffalo’s Child is based on the companion book by author Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Anchor Bay Entertainment releases Wilson And The Ice Cream Fair, the newest preschool Chuggington DVD title, this week. Chuggington is a CGI-animated preschool series from Ludorum. Two new promotional tie-in campaigns for the DVD release this month. First, beginning this month Luigi’s Real Italian Ice packages will feature a coupon for $2 off on the purchase price of the new title or any other Chuggington DVD. In addition, consumers who purchase a Chuggington DVD and any Joy Cone brand 42 count Mini-Cups or 18 count Color Cups from May 1 to October 30, 2012, will be entitled to receive a free Frostini die-cast train from TOMY (does not include handling charges apply).

US-based construction toy company K’Nex enters into a licensing deal with Apple Corps. to launch a new line of building figures based on The Beatles Yellow Submarine. The agreement, brokered by Live Nation Merchandise, provides K’Nex with the rights to create building toys based on the classic animated movie. Buildable figure packs will include collectible figures of John, Paul, George and Ringo – each wearing his super groovy outfit from the movie – and musical instruments. The packaging from the packs doubles as a stage. Designed for K5+, The Beatles Yellow Submarine figure packs will be available exclusively at Target, target.com and knex.com in fall 2012.

Rocket Licensing in the UK and Licensing Street in the US have been appointed to take the reading-centric preschool Driver Dan’s Story Train brand into a wide range of categories across the two territories. Exiting partnerships already include Golden Bear as the master toy licensee, the Macmillan Campbell Books imprint has produced a range of books for the English language market, and Universal is the DVD partner in the UK market where two DVDs have been released. Rocket plans to work with all of Driver Dan’s existing licensing and retail partners to maximize the brand throughout 2012 and 2013, as well as launching promotional programs to boost awareness of the brand in the UK. Licensing Street will showcase the property this June at Licensing International Expo in Las Vegas. Created by author/illustrator Rebecca Elgar, Driver Dan’s Story Train is a 3Line Media production in association with twofour54 Abu Dhabi. The series airs on CBeebies (UK) and Sprout (US).

  • In pan-Latin America deals: Pay TV channel Yups acquires Jonathan M. Shiff & ZDF Enterprises’ Scooter, Secret Agent (26X26) and Shaftesbury’s Baxter (13X30) for all territories excluding Argentina & Brazil; Discovery Communications picks up season one of Guru Studios’ Justin Time for Pay TV; while Spellbound Entertainment’s The Koala Brothers (39X26) is acquired by TEVES (Venezuela) and IMPS’ The Smurfs (163X26) to KM Services (Nicaragua).

Canadian game developer Game Pill is creating a new side-scrolling adventure video based on 9 Story Entertainment‘s animated series Almost Naked Animals. The platform game will allow players to become part of the Almost Naked Animals world by choosing one of the quirky characters to run their own tropical hotel and compete to become the best hotel on the strip. Almost Naked Animals is currently in its 3rds season and airs in the US on Cartoon Network, as well as channels around the world including YTV (Canada), CiTV (UK), ABC (Australia), Disney Channels in Italy, India, Latin America, Spain and Portugal, NPO’s kid’s channel Z@pp/Zeppelin (Netherlands), Super RTL (Germany), Canal+ Family and Teletoon+.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop promotes Erica Branch-Ridley to VP, Executive in Charge of Production for Sesame Learning. Branch-Ridley will focus on emerging technologies and educational impact for delivery of Sesame Street content to preschool environments of the next several years, as well as being responsible for working across multiple platforms and connecting various departments to further the Workshop’s content. Branch-Ridley will report to Laura Smith, VP/Sesame Learning. Branch-Ridley joined the Workshop in 2008 as the Broadband Supervising Producer for The Electric Company and most recently served as Assistant VP and Supervising Producer of The Electric Company Digital. Previously, she was an Executive Producer and Sr. Director for TV Land Digital, overseeing creative direction and production for the TV Land and Nick-at-Nite websites. She also toiled for Nickelodeon Online, The AT&T Learning Network, BET and CBS News.
