Cynopsis: Kids!

3/14/07

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. has unveiled its long-term strategy to produce all of its films in full 3D from 2009.  DreamWorks plans to produce its movies employing stereoscopic 3D technology from the start of the movie production process.  The studio has already begun production on its first movie to be made in this format, Monsters vs. Aliens (working title), which is slated for release in summer 2009.  Up until this time many of the movies shown in 3D were produced for regular movie theater projection with the 3D parts or full-length 3D movies rendered for 3D projection in post-production (e.g. Chicken Little and others).  According to DreamWorks, “this approach will increase its storytelling opportunities and create a more immersive movie-viewing experience.”  As for where these movies will be shown, DreamWorks points to a significant increase over the past two years in the number of theaters that have the proper equipment to support stereoscopic projection, and projects by 2009 there will be several thousand screens equipped for 3D.  Heading the DreamWorks stereoscopic 3D movie effort will be Jason Clark and Jim Mainard.

Launching this week is the beta version of Disney Family.com, the parent-targeted website, which will feature a range of family related content, search and community elements.  Part of The Walt Disney Internet Group (WDIG), Family.com will feature parenting/family centric: original and aggregated content; user-generated opinion pieces from parenting bloggers; search functions; a list of 1,000 community recommended sites; forums; chats; and eventually ParentPedia, a family wiki of parenting topics.  Disney plans to add features and functionality, including the ability to access Disney Family.com via mobile phones and other platforms, within the next year.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Carol Burnett has signed on as a member of the cast of Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who, the CG animated feature film from Fox Animation.  Burnett, who will lend her voice to the skeptical Kangaroo in the story, joins the voice cast that already features Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, as well as Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Dane Cook, Jaime Pressly, and Jonah Hill.  Scheduled for release exactly a year from today, March 14, 2008, Horton Hears A Who is from Fox Animation’s Blue Sky Studios.  Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino will direct the movie from a script adaptation penned by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio.

Marvel Studios begins production this week on its live-action feature film Iron Man.  The movie is its self-produced and financed.

Gumnutz, an animated telemovie targeted to K6-12 will premiere in Australia on Channel Seven in late 2007.  Produced by Flying Bark Productions in collaboration with Big Pix, Gumnutz is funded by the Australian Film Finance Corporation.  So, what is Gumnutz?  Well, glad you asked.  Gumnutz stars Claude, a neurotic numbat, who finds himself going up against the villainous and yet crafty fox in order to save his uncle’s juice factory and the town from the clutches of.   The series underlines friendship, family and responsibility.  I looked it up for everyone, a numbat is a real animal.  Numbats are small marsupials that live in Australia; actually they specifically live in Western Australia.  Now go and impress your friends!

9 Story Entertainment, a Canadian-based animation production/distribution studio, has begun production on two new animated properties for kids, Best Ed (52×11′) and Futz! (26×3′).

  • A 2D animated series, Best Ed revolves around the unlikely friendship Ed, a helpful dog, and Buddy, a squirrel. The show is a 9 Story original production for Teletoon in Canada and Cartoon Network UK. 9 Story Entertainment’s newly formed distribution division is distributing the series, with pre-sale deals for the show already completed with Cartoon Network Europe and the Middle East.  Best Ed is targeted to kids/tweens; the show is expected to delivery in early 2008.
  • Futz! is a 2D digital nonverbal comedy based on the adventures of an odd character that gets himself into all sort of strange situations.  An original 9Story production, Futz will air on Teletoon. The series is produced and distributed by 9 Story and is scheduled to be completed September 2007.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Aardman AnimationsShaun the Sheep will make its way around the world following a deal with Nickelodeon International. The 40×7 Wallace and Gromit spin-off, aimed at K4-10, will head out to air on Nickelodeon Benelux (April), Spain and India (May), Australia, and New Zealand (later in 2007).  The agreement with Nickelodeon International will transport the stop-motion kids series to a total of 72 territories.

Childhood Obesity: Danger Zone, a new documentary produced by Al Roker Entertainment is set to premiere on Food Network on Saturday March 31, 9-10p.  The special looks at real stories of real families that are working to change the way they eat as well as examining how parents, teachers, physicians and elected officials are heading the campaign against this epidemic.  Al Roker serves as Executive Producer on the project.

Cartoon Network’s Saturday night programming block Toonami will host the premiere of Hellboy: Blood and Iron, the second feature Hellboy animated feature film, on March 17, 2007, at 7p.  The movie features the voices of a number of the actors that appeared in director Guillermo del Toro’s live-action Hellboy (2004) movie including, John Hurt, Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones. Tad Stones and Victor Cook direct the movie. Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola are creative producers.  Directed by Tad Stones and Victor Cook, Hellboy: Blood and Iron is produced by Film Roman, a Starz Media Company and is distributed worldwide for TV, and on DVD/video by Starz Media, LLC., under a license from Revolution studios.  This is not for younger kids  but then you probably figured that out.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kids animator Studio B Productions Inc. and Nelvana Enterprises are releasing on DVD the first Being Ian film, Hurry to Hollywood, which is based on the Being Ian animated series.  The DVD will hit the Canadian market as the first DVD release under Corus Entertainment’s YTV Presents label.  The Being Ian show currently airs on Corus Entertainment Inc.’s YTV and VRAK as well as in numerous other countries.

FUNimation Entertainment will release Afro Samurai on DVD on May 22, including a Director’s Cut edition.  Koch Records released the “soultastic” soundtrack with original score composed and produced by Wu-Tang Clan frontman The RZA at the end of January. Producer GDH also partnered with Amp’d Mobile to offer exclusive Afro Samurai made-for-mobile entertainment content for all platforms to the service’s subscribers.  DC Comics’ collectibles brand, DC Direct, picked up a license to release a line of action figures and collectibles based on Afro Samurai to be distributed in the US and Canada by DC Unlimited.
