Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 6, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

The Walt Disney Company is taking on childhood obesity and making healthy eating choices in a new way by becoming the first major media company to introduce a new set of standards for the kid-targeted food advertising that it will air during programming aimed at kids and families on Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Radio Disney and related websites. The goal is to bring all food and beverage products advertised, sponsored, or promoted on kid/family-aimed Disney TV channels, radio stations and online destinations will be required to meet Disney new nutritional guidelines by 2015. These nutrition guidelines are aligned to federal standards, promote fruit and vegetable consumption and recommend limiting calories and reducing saturated fat, sodium, and sugar. This new move builds on the initial nutritional guidelines that Disney established in 2006. Neither Disney Channel nor Disney Junior is an ad-supported TV network, however both channels do feature promotions and sponsorships. Disney also unveiled the Mickey Check icon/symbol (Mickey Mouse ears) that when featured denotes nutritious food and menu items sold in stores, online, and at restaurants and food venues at its US Parks and Resorts. By the end of 2012 the Mickey Check will appear on licensed foods products, on qualified recipes on Disney.com and Family.com, and on menus and select products at Disney’s Parks and Resorts.

LICENSING

2K Play and Nickelodeon will launch new preschool-aimed video games based on Nickelodeon’s imagination, educational and interactive driven series including, Dora the Explorer, Bubble Guppies and Team Umizoomi. Available this November 2012, Nickelodeon Dance 2 for console systems, a follow-up to the popular Nickelodeon Dance, featuring new Nickelodeon characters, multiple game modes, original dances, and up-beat songs from the network’s TV shows. In addition, a Bubble Guppies, based on the CG-animated preschool series, will make its video game debut for Nintendo DS. Rounding out the lineup, Dora & Team Umizoomi’s Fantastic Flight also for Nintendo DS brings together the math superheroes of Team Umizoomi and the Dora the Explorer for the very first time. The console titles are being developed by High Voltage Software, and Nintendo DS titles by Black Lantern Studios.

Classic Media inks new consumer products partnerships for Olivia, including Just Play (master toy partner) and LeapFrog (educational entertainment). Dalmatian Press (coloring and activity books), Chronicle Books (novelty formats) and Publications International (sound & look and find books) round out the Olivia publishing program anchored by master publisher partner Simon & Schuster.

A Squared Elxsi Entertainment (A2E2) and Build-A-Bear Workshop enter into a licensing deal with Zeikos Electronics to produce and distribute Build-A-Bear Workshop themed consumer electronic accessories including ear buds, headphones, iPhone/iPad cases and speakers. Under the new deal, brokered by A2E2, the new line of accessories will be available at select retails in time for holiday 2012. Build-A-Bear Workshop and A2E2 recently expanded the Build-A-Bear Workshop license into other categories outside of the brand’s retail locations, including partnerships with 505 Games, Playmates Toys, Enterplay, Candy Treasures, ConAgra and TCG Puzzles, which have already or will launch at retail this year. This year Build-A-Bear celebrates its 15th birthday.

Sakar International and Kidz Bop enter into a licensing deal to develop, market and manufacture a new line of youth-targeted audio/video electronics. The pact will feature merchandise including karaoke machines, headphones, earbuds, and speakers and docking stations. Additional products including DVRs (digital video recorders) and digital cameras tied to the Kidz Bop music series, which showcases current popular songs sung by kids. The initial products are slated to hit shelves in the US and Canada during Q4 2012, followed by an additional product roll out in 2013. Additionally, this July 17, Kidz Bop will release Kidz Bop 22, the latest installment of the popular audio series. Kidz Bop will also launch its annual Kidz Star USA Talent Search (www.kidzstarusa.com), Kidz Bop’s national talent competition for kids 15 and under.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax heads home this summer when Universal Studios Home Entertainment release the animated feature film this August 7, 2012 on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack and Blu-ray Combo Pack, both featuring DVD, Digital Copy and UltraViolet so fans can watch the movie anytime, anywhere. The Blu-ray Combo Pack will feature bonus content including three previously unseen Lorax mini movies, Serenade, Wagon-Ho, and Forces of Nature. Each of the Combo Pack releases includes a range of other bonus content including a deleted scene, a tutorial on how to draw the Lorax and other characters, a look at the translation of the book to movie, the Truffula Run game, a Karaoke-style sing-along, among other features. The other releases also include various bonus content. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax will also be available on DVD and Digital Download.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) furthers its Care Bears licensing program around the world by signing new partners. These new partnerships, the debut of the new CG-animated TV series, Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot, on The Hub and a Hasbro 2013 toy launch in key territories all coincide with The Care Bears’ 30th anniversary. Newly inked Care Bears licensing deals include: Newco will develop themed furniture for kids for the US (wooden upholstered rocking chairs, sofas, bean bag chairs, and toy boxes); Oysho renews its worldwide direct-to-retail deal for themed sleepwear and underwear launching spring 2012; Israeli company Fox acquires the direct-to-retail rights for a line of Care Bears baby/kids/teen/adult apparel  to be sold at Fox stores worldwide; Sunset International (Bioworld) signs on for a collection of Care Bears apparel and accessories to be available in Germany and Benelux; New Care Bears publishing deals have been completed with Editorial Artemisa (Argentina) and Shanghai 99 Culture (China); new Care Bears licensees in Brazil include Fakini Malhas (apparel), Tilibra (stationery), Emoly (HBA) and Climaco (oral care). In the Care Bears live event area, new partners include XSystem (Singapore), Alikhan Live Entertainment (Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia), and Entertainment Store (Australia).

The Jim Henson Company signs licensing deals around the world for its animated series Dinosaur Train and also names a new licensing agent for the property.

 

  • TOMY will be introducing its new Dinosaur Train product line into both the UK and Germany in spring 2013. The product line will include the launch of the Dinosaur Train InterAction Figures that utilize Smart Talk Technology that allow the figures to recognize and respond to each other, each character is fully articulated and is packed with one-of-a-kind dinosaur features, including at least 40 dinosaur sounds, facts and character phrases.
  • New European licensees recently signed for the property include: Puffin in the UK for new product in the publishing category beginning in spring 2013; Evasion Communications for costumes and Shok ID for soft toys in France; and Junior Productions for meet and greet promos with walk around character appearances in Sweden. In Portugal, a new publishing deal is inked with Babel; soap, shampoo and shower gels will be available under a licensing pact with Secret Fragrancy; and iPlay will debut music CDs. The European licensing deals were negotiated in collaboration with the local licensing agents Alphanim (France), Alicom (Sweden), and Atxilipu (Portugal).
  • Henson has appointed Megalicense to represent the Dinosaur Train brand in Russia and all of CIS, and C-Trade is named as the toy licensee for the region.
  • In Latin America, Exim Licensing adds several new Dinosaur Train licensees, including Editorial Artemisa (activity, coloring and sticker books and story books) in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile; Flash Toys (toys, cushions and plush) in Venezuela; Grafiart (party goods) in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay; Mexbras Industria Plastica (dinnerware) in Brazil; Nenes Chicks (infant/toddler apparel) in Mexico; and also in Mexico Photo Pack (stationery, backpacks, pencil cases, lunch boxes and melamine plates, bowls and cups).

MARKETING

Radio Disney recently launched a new Facebook Local App that allows Radio Disney listeners to have a unique geo-targeted experience – specific to their local community. Radio Disney Facebook cans can now see a list of upcoming events for kids/families in their market, and will be able to RSVP to events and receive reminders too. The Facebook Local App offers customized video content and users can also subscribe to receive regular updates about events in their market. Radio Disney, which has listeners in 31+ markets, launched its Facebook page a little more than year ago and has 576,000 fans.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney orders a second season of its new preschool animated series Doc McStuffins for both the Disney Junior daily programming block on Disney Channel and the new 24-hour Disney Junior channel. Disney is also set to introduce Doc McStuffins books, apparel, party goods and role play toys, dolls and accessories, beginning this summer 2012 through early 2013, with a Doc McStuffins DVD slated for release this August 21. Created and executive-produced by Chris Nee (writer/Little Bill, producer/Deadliest Catch: Crab Fishing in Alaska) and directed by Norton Virgien (Rugrats), “Doc McStuffins” is a production of Brown Bag Films in association with Disney Channel.

Disney XD in the US will premiere the second season (26 episodes) of live-action comedy Mr. Young, from Nelvana Enterprises and Thunderbird Films, on Monday, June 11, 2012 at 9p. Filmed in front of a live studio audience in Vancouver, the comedy revolves around Adam Young, a child prodigy who graduates college at age 14 and lands a job as a high school science teacher, putting him in the unique position of teaching students his own age. If the situation wasn’t awkward enough, this means his students include his best friend, the girl he has a crush on, and the class bully, all of which makes for interesting challenges in Mr. Young’s social life. Created by Dan Signer (creator/showrunner on A.N.T. Farm, senior writer/producer The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Suite Life on Deck), Mr. Young is produced by Thunderbird Films in association with Corus’ YTV. Nelvana Enterprises is the international distribution agent for Mr. Young, while Nelvana and Thunderbird are co-distributing the series in the US.

RATINGS

The Hub‘s premiere of its new original series Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot on Saturday, June 2 at 8a delivered K2-11 (215,000) and K6-11 (81,000) up over the same time last year by +284% and +108% respectively. The season two premiere of the network’s original series Pound Puppies also Saturday, June 2 at 9a was up versus last year among K6-11 (166,000) by +105%. Both premiere episodes helped drive The Hub’s best Total Day week, Monday, May 28-Sunday June 3, 2012, 6a-6a, in six months with K2-11 and K6-11.
