~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

BBC America is teaming with UK-based independent studio Clerkenwell Films on two new series: Wired is a sci-fi series from writer Steven Volk (Afterlife) that explores man’s evolving relationship with technology and the second series is The Dead Beat, a paranormal crime series from John Jackson (Being Human) centering on two cops, one dead and one alive.  Both series will be distributed by BBC Worldwide.  These projects are the first from the non-exclusive development deal between BBC America and Clerkenwell Films announced in September 2011.

Alan Ball, creator of HBO’s True Blood is stepping down in his role as the series’ daily showrunner.  According to a statement released by HBO yesterday, Ball intended to take a more supervisory role on True Blood if HBO extended the series to a sixth season.  Ball is still busy as his crime drama Banshee received a series order of 10 episodes from Cinemax.  In addition, Ball has the one-hour medical drama Wichita in development at HBO.

In other HBO news, Michael Mann, the EP/director of the network’s series Luck will continue working with the network for a limited docu-series titled Witness chronicling war photographers.  The four-episode series will follow combat photographers documenting conflict in Mexico, Brazil, Uganda and Libya.  Mann will partner with documentary director David Frankham.

For the first time the role of Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick Dr. Watson will be portrayed by a woman.  Lucy Liu landed the role on CBS’ pilot Elementary playing opposite Jonny Lee Miller as the famous detective Holmes in a modern-day take set in New York City.  Liu is currently appearing on TNT’s Southland.  CBS TV Studios is producing Elementary.

Former Charlie’s Angels co-star Rachael Taylor landed a co-starring role on ABC’s drama pilot 666 Park Avenue.  Taylor will play Jane married to Henry (Dave Annabele), the couple who is hired to manage an historic apartment building in New York City filled with supernatural occurrences.  Lost’s Terry O’Quinn will play the owner of the building.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

Academy Award-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. was tapped for the lead role in FOX’s Greg Berlanti legal drama pilot Guilty.  The drama is about William “Billy” Remz (Gooding), an ethically questionable defense attorney who has been stripped of his license to practice law after being falsely convicted of fraud.  Remz uses his untraditional ways to solve cases he’s been banned from handling.  If this pilot is ordered to series, this project marks Gooding’s first foray into regular series television.  Gooding joins previously-announced Eva Amurri Martino who will play Lily, another attorney who works closely with Billy.

Correction:  Eva Amurri Martino joins FOX’s pilot Guilty after having a role on the Showtime series Californication.  In Tuesday’s edition, we incorrectly identified Californication’s network and we apologize for the error.

Marin Ireland will play the potentially recurring role of the sister of homicide detective Holder’s (Joel Kinnaman) sister in AMC’s The Killing second season, per TVLine
