Cynopsis: Kids!
08.14.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 14, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES

Saban-powered kids programming block Vortexx on The CW will unveil a new lineup on Saturday (Aug. 17). New shows include action-adventurer B-Daman Crossfire and The Spectacular Spider-Man, plus educational series The Adventures of Chuck & Friends. Current marquee titles including Sonic X, Justice League Unlimited and Dragonball Z Kai remain on the lineup, which airs weekly 7a-noon. “These new programs, along with tons of fresh new content on MyVortexx.com, will provide fans with hours of fun and entertainment both on TV and online,” said Vortexx president Joel Andryc.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Gather the family and head for the flat-screen. Hub Network’s Family Game Night returns Sunday, Aug. 18, 7-8p, for a fourth season. Hosted by Todd Newton, the series returns with four new larger-than-life versions of classic games: Jenga, Monopoly Remix, Barrel of Monkeys and a new version of Yahtzee. The comedies pit families from the audience against each other in a competition for cash and prizes, including a new car. The series is produced by Hasbro Studios and Zoo Productions.

ABC’s family programming is about to get a little wilder. SeaWorld Entertainment will debut its second TV show to air on ABC affiliates on Saturday, Oct. 5, on the Litton Weekend Adventure programming block. The new series, Wildlife Docs, goes behind the scenes with the zoo team at Busch Gardens Tampa, the land-animal sister park to SeaWorld, which is an elite team of veterinarians, technicians and trainers who care for the 12,000 exotic animals that inhabit Busch Gardens. Sea Rescue, the hit show about SeaWorld’s wildlife rescue and rehab program that’s garnered 86 million viewers in two seasons, returns for season three this fall.

The Phineas and Ferb-Marvel mashup will make its debut on Disney Channel Friday, Aug. 16. The first-ever crossover between the hit series and characters from the Marvel universe features the brothers trying to help Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk and fend off super villains and getting caught in their own attack Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Voice talent for the Marvel characters includes Drake Bell (Spider-Man); Adrian Pasdar (Iron Man) and Travis Willingham (Thor). Stan Lee will also make a guest appearance as himself.

Wag those tails. Hub Network is returning its popular Dog Days of Summer, Aug. 1217. The puppy programming event features a week of canine-themed movies and culminates in a marathon of Hasbro Studios’ animated series Pound Puppies on Saturday, Aug. 17, 6a-noon. Viewers also have the opportunity to play the all-new Pound Puppies: Puppy Care Academy game at Hubworld.com/dogdays, where they can take care of the pups from the series by feeding, grooming and playing with them.

Get ready for more Camp Wawanakwa fun. Cartoon Network will premiere season five of its unique “animated reality show” Total Drama: Total Drama All-Stars on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7p. Created by Cake Entertainment, the show features 14 favorite animated contestants from seasons past, each hoping to be the one to take home the $1 million prize.

CynKids was in the house at the Gibson Amphitheater for the Teen Choice Awards Sunday night, a packed, fast-paced shriek-a-thon that was a ratings win for Fox. The telecast averaged a 2.8 rating among teens 12-17, according to Nielsen, which is 17% higher than last year’s TCA telecast on the network. The live crowd went particularly wild whenever there was a mention or sighting from ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars–star Lucy Hale was a guest host with Glee’s Darren Criss and the show picked up a slew of awards including Choice TV Show, Drama, and Summer TV Show; Miley Cyrus, who won for Choice Summer Song; and boy band One Direction, which opened the show and won several awards including Choice Tour and Love Song. A hush did fall over the crowd when the cast of Glee came on stage, including Lea Michele, who made her first pubic appearance since the death of series co-star and real-life boyfriend Cory Monteith. “For all of you who loved Cory as much as I did-I promise you we’ll get through this together,” she said.

RESEARCH & DATA

Research consultancy Latitude’s new study The Future of Storytelling shows digital TV will be an integral part of how stories are told in the years to come. According to the study, “audiences are more ready than ever to embrace new tech-driven possibilities for stories to [affect] us more deeply.” The report identifies four different audience archetypes: Seekers, Relaters, Realists, and Players. Among findings:

  • 78% want to “friend” a character digitally on Facebook or via text messages and have the ability to help sway the character’s decisions.
  • 87% want to see events through the eyes of a particular character or to switch between different characters’ points-of-view.
  • 41% use a second screen at least daily while watching TV.
  • The most popular second screen interactions for TV shows tend to be goal-oriented, such as earning rewards (80% interested), voting to decide a show’s outcome (79%), or making a purchase (76%).
  • 92% agree there’s a real opportunity for brands to make ads feel more like a story or a game that they’d naturally choose to engage with.
