Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 6, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Profanity, violence and the s-x occur once every 3.5 minutes during the family hour, according to a new Parents Television Council (PTC) 2006-2007 study of Family Hour programming (Mondays-Saturdays, 8-9p, Sundays 7-9p).  The PTC report sites Fox as the worst broadcast network, with 20.78 instances of violence/cursing/s-x each hour, almost double that of like content televised on the other big broadcast networks.  The report points to Fox’s American Dad as the network’s worst offender on the network overall (52 counts of objectionable content).  The PTC report also wagged its finger at shows including Fox’s 24, NBC’s My Name is Earl and Fox’s The War at Home as the biggest culprits.  On the flip side The CW ranks in as the “cleanest programming.”  Primetime reality and game shows across all of the broadcast networks were viewed as the best shows based on the troika of criteria.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Jim Henson Company is partnering with KCET, the PBS West Coast station, to co-produce What’s the Big Idea? (40×30′), a new educational series slated to premiere on PBS Kids in 2008.  With a goals of promoting science readiness and encouraging kids to be curious and ask questions, the series will be executive produced by Henson Company’s Brian Henson, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford, and KCET’s Joyce Campbell.  Henson will handle ancillary rights for the property including licensing, video and merchandising.  Created using the Henson Digital Performance Studio, production on What’s The Big Idea? begins this month.

9 Story Entertainment has completed production on the first season Futz! (26×3′), the Tween 9-14 aimed animated series.  A Teletoon original production, the series is slated to premiere this month on the channel.  Futz is a 2D digital nonverbal comedy based on the adventures of a weird looking character that gets himself into all sorts of strange situations.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Kabillion has a new carriage deal under which the kid-targeted multiplatform program service (free VOD channel and broadband site) has been added to the Bresnan Communications cable system.  The deal makes Kabillion available in digital cable homes across Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming, joining digital cable homes on Comcast Cable.  Additional MSOs will be added later this year.  Additionally, Kabillion has launched the new 2D animated series Staines Down Drains, from EM.TV, on all platforms, which follows the adventures of tween twins, John Stanley and Mary-Jane Staines, who travel down the drain and into the sewer system under their town.  Kabillion’s online platform will debut three new original video games: Playworld Invasion, based on the series Pet Alien; Big Fish featuring the lead character from Bobby’s World; and Rocket Lander, a game based on the show I Got A Rocket!

Season three of Avatar: The Last Airbender will bow Friday, September 21, at 8:30p on Nickelodeon.  Leading up to the new season debut, Nicktoons Network will run a mini Avatar marathon, featuring episodes from the first two seasons, from Monday, September 17 at 2p through Thursday, September 20.  Also slated for this month is the DVD release, Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Complete Book 2 Collection, on Tuesday, September 11 from Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment.  The box set includes all of the second season of the series and a bonus DVD with exclusive content such as an interview with screenwriter/director/actor M. Night Shyamalan, who is helming the live-action Avatar feature film.  Additionally, the release features an animated graphic novel, three original shorts, and martial arts segment.  Finally, Avatar shorts, clips and episode instant replays, after they bow on-air, can be found on TurboNick, with episodes also available on VOD.  Later this fall Nick will introduce two new Avatar themed online games, The Day of the Black Sun from November 15, and Clash of the Benders from November 29.

The preschool animated series Little Bill joins Noggin’s programming line up beginning this Monday, September 10, 2007 at 11a.  Based on Bill Cosby’s Little Bill book series of the same name, the TV series, which initially debuted on Nick Jr., will air weekdays on Noggin at 11a and 2:30p, and weekends at 1:30p.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Giddy Gander Company LLC has granted The Learning Journey International an exclusive toy license for The Wumblers preschool TV series.  Under the deal, Learning Journey will develop product based on the series including puzzles, board games, and electronic toys for release at mass-market retailers, specialty stores, supermarket and drug store changes, bookstores and via education focused outlets.  The Wumblers joined the Trinity Broadcasting Network lineup this month and will join Smile of A Child on September 10, 2007.

RATINGS

For 3Q 2007 Kabillion VOD channel and a broadband site ( http://www.Kabillion.com) is up + 32% in average versus 1Q 2007.  Much of that increase is attributed to the August launch of the new preschool block Kabillion Jr.
