Apparently, NBC’s Today co-host Ann Curry will not exit NBC News.  Reportedly, Curry is in negotiations with NBC executives to move into a new role with the network though will not continue as co-host of Today.  Savannah Guthrie, who currently co-hosts the 9a hour of Today with Natalie Morales and Al Roker has been offered a promotion to co-host the main broadcast alongside Matt Lauer.  NBC has yet to make an official announcement.

National Geographic Channel’s (NGC) upcoming new series Chasing UFOs is based on a survey that reveals one-third of Americans believe UFOs do exist.  Chasing UFOs, premiering July 29 with two stacked episodes at 9p and 10p, will explore the signs and evidence that aliens do exist and goes deeper into the US extraterrestrial survey from NGC.  Chasing UFOs is produced by Ping Pong Productions (PPP) for National Geographic Channels.

Sharks do exist and this August, Discovery Channel kicks off the 25th edition of Shark Week.  Cable’s longest-running programming event begins August 12 at 9p with eight shark-themed specials such as Air Jaws Apocalypse, Shark Fight and Great White Highway among others.  New for this year, the team from MythBusters presents Sharkzilla, the largest shark ever to swim in the oceans and viewers will be able to review the scariest, funniest and other memorable moments of the past 24 years in Shark Week’s 25 Best Bites.  Shark Week’s 25th anniversary also includes Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman as they count down their top 25 shark myths of all time in MythBusters’ Jawsome Shark Special.  For more information on sharks, viewers can visit SharkWeek.com. 

Discovery Channel also has new series Property Wars set to debut July 12 at 10p.  The series follows rival bidders in Phoenix who buy homes at auction sometimes sight unseen. 

New docu-reality series In the Big House chronicles the West Hollywood-based Verdis family when the series debuts on Logo July 23 at 10p.  The series follows members of the Verdis clan, described as a new type of modern family with over-the-top personalities who also own one of LA’s top gay bars.  The eight-episode, half-hour series is executive produced by Jenny Daly (T Group) and Rob Lobl. 

First season sitcom Men at Work was renewed for a second run by TBS.  Airing on Thursdays at 10p, Men at Work currently ranks as one of basic cable’s Top 5 new series among A18-49 for the quarter.   TBS ordered 10 episodes for season two which will premiere next year.  Breckin Meyer created and co-stars in the series produced by Sony Pictures Television and Fanfare.

Ready to serve up more barbeque, Destination America (formerly Planet Green), has approved another season of BBQ Pitmasters.  To date, BBQ Pitmasters is the network’s #1 original series in demos including A18-49, M18-49, A25-54, W/M25-54 and with total viewers.  The third season of the barbecue competition series is currently in progress on Destination America and the season finale and cook-off will air this Sunday at 9p, preceded by an all-day marathon of BBQ Pitmasters’ episodes beginning at 11a.  The series is produced for Destination America by Original Media.

Season three of Syfy’s competition series, Face Off debuts on a new night and time beginning August 21 at 9p.  A new group of special effects make-up artists will compete in a series of challenges to determine who is the most skilled and deserving to win Face Off.   Host McKenzie Westmore returns for the new season along with judges Ve Neill and Glenn Hetrick.  Patrick Tatopolous will be part of the judges’ panel during the premiere episode before he begins production on his latest project, 300: Battle of Artemisia.  Joining for the third season is new judge Neville Page, who has held such positions as Lead Creature Designer on Avatar and as Character Designer on Ridley Scott’s Prometheus among other film projects.  Several celebrity guest judges will also be part of the upcoming new season including producer Brian Grazer; Kevin Smith; Gale Anne Hurd; Sean Astin; and boxer Laila Ali among others.  Face Off is produced by Mission Control Media.

A third season of Strange Sex debuts July 15 at 10p on TLC.  The series explores strange sexual conditions, fetishes and the science behind sexual attraction.  The series is produced for TLC by Sirens Media. 

July 1, 2012, is the deadline the FCC set for broadcast and cable networks to begin providing a minimum of four hours per week of video described programming, which is a secondary audio track narration describing the visual happenings in each scene created for the blind and visually impaired audience.  Diane Johnson, founder and CEO of Descriptive Video Works, one of the providers of video description services in North America is declaring this Sunday as “Independence Day” for the approximately 30 million blind and visually impaired Americans.  Reportedly, video description services could increase ratings for those networks offering the service.  Back in October 2010, President Obama signed the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA) into law.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Global television channel dedicated to luxury and the luxury lifestyle, LUXE.TV is now available in the US via DISH Network.  LUXE.TV’s programming is available in both English and French in DISH’s International Basic and French Bouquet packages for $10 or $19.99 respectively.  LUXE.TV’s programming includes docu-series produced by Opuntia S.A. with titles like DESTINATION and LUXE.TODAY and other programming involving trends, people, culture, food and fine dining, travel and nature, high tech and cars.

AMC Networks’ Sundance Channel and ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE) made an exclusive distribution agreement involving Sundance Channel’s first wholly-owned scripted production titled Rectify.  The drama series with six one-hour episodes will be represented by ITVS GE in all territories outside the US and will be part of ITVS GE’s offerings at MIPCOM 2012.  Rectify was created and written by Ray McKinnon who is also an EP on the project.  Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein of the production company Gran Via also serve as EPs.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS’ The Good Wife continues to hire more high-profile actors for season four.  Nathan Lane is joining in a recurring role as a bottom line-obsessed manager imposed on Lockhart & Gardner by the bank to cut costs and get the firm back to fiscal health.  Lane’s character will lock horns with Will, Diane and everyone else at the firm.  Lane will make his first appearance in the September season premiere.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis:  Both FOX and NBC delivered the highest ratings Tuesday among A18-49 at 2.3/7 each, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  FOX served up the top ratings during 8p with Hell’s Kitchen at 2.3/8 followed by NBC’s US Olympic Trials: Swimming at 2.0/7.  NBC then hit the right note at 9p as America’s Got Talent posted a 3.2/9 while FOX flipped into second place with MasterChef at 2.3/7.  At 10p, Univision then moved into first place with La Que No Podia Amar at 1.8/5 and NBC’s reality series Love in the Wild was a couple of paces behind at 1.6/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective July 9, Irene Baker is joining The Madison Square Garden Company as SVP/Government Affairs.  Irene will have responsibility as the company’s chief government affairs executive to head all the company’s public affairs matters.  She will report to Barry Watkins, EVP/Communications and Administration.

Eric Hadley was tapped by The Weather Channel Companies (TWCC) as SVP/Partner Solutions and Ad Trade Marketing.  Eric will relocated to New York from Seattle for his new position and report to Beth Lawrence, EVP/Ad Sales and Media Solutions, TWCC. 

Carat North America bolsters its ranks by hiring Michael Vitti as SVP/Group Director, Data and Analytics.  In his new role, Michael will manage Carat’s data and analytics practice encompassing digital analytics, marketing sciences and data services.

Thom Beers’ Original Productions Entertainment Networks added Tammy Billings as VP/Integrated Marketing.  Tammy will be responsible for securing national advertisers and their agencies to market their brands through the 14 Original Productions’ series currently seen on major cable TV networks.  

Emily Yeomans was named Senior Director/Communications with Oxygen Media.  Emily joins from Bravo Media where she headed promotional campaigns for several franchises and shows.  Based in New York, Emily will report to Julie Rothman, VP/Communications at Oxygen Media.

ABC News President Ben Sherwood announced Ed O’Keefe, Executive Producer of ABC News Digital will depart next month to pursue a new position as Editor-In-Chief of a social news video start-up.  Ed has been with ABC News for close to 12 years.
