Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

TeenNick will premiere 11th season of Degrassi, its second in the daily telenovela-style format, with an hour-long special with guest star Keke Palmer (True Jackson, VP) on Monday, July 18, at 9p.  The new season episodes of Degrassi will premiere each weeknight for seven straight weeks, July 18 – September 1, at 9p.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBeebies orders two new in-house preschool productions, Justin’s House and Numbats, and renews two existing series, Mr Bloom’s Nursery and ZingZillas.

  • Justin’s House (22×25) – hosted by CBeebies’ Justin Fletcher (Something Special, Gigglebiz), the series will be produced at the BBC’s new home at MediaCity in front of a live studio audience of preschoolers.  The series will feature Justin entertaining K3-6 (in the audience and at home) with a mix of singing, dancing and comedy, and games with the help of Robert, his robot butler, Little Monster, a trickster and Dee Livery, the unicycling delivery lady, along with special guests
  • Numbats (25×5) – a mixed live-action and CG-animated series, Numbats features 10 furry animated characters on a mission to teach preschoolers about the numbers 1-10.  Each episode focuses on a specific number and Numbat, each Numbat has its own number printed on their belly.  The show also features Numbats looking for numbers in real world settings.
  • Zingzillas returns for a second season (52×11) in a new, shorter format.
  • Mr Bloom’s Nursery also heads back into production on a second season (26×20) and a special episode.  The new season will feature two new Veggies, potatoes Tom and Barbara, a bickering couple who sit on shelf in the nursery.  In the special episode, Mr Bloom will take his Veggies to work with a group of kids to create a community garden.

MORE KIDS STUFF

OK all you Muggles – pay attention.  Beginning this Friday, June 24, Comcast will begin offering Xfinity TV digital customers exclusive looks at the final Harry Potter movie, as in Deathly Hallows – Part 2, on Xfinity On Demand, XfinityTV.com and via the Xfinity TV app.  Additionally, customers can also now rent the first seven Happy Potter movies and 100+ extras (free) – you know interviews, deleted scenes, costume fittings, trailers and the like on Xfinity On Demand and XfinityTV.com.  The Xfinity sneak peeks leading up to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, which opens on July 15, are as follows from:

  • June 24: The Story – a featurette showcasing what Harry, Ron and Hermione are faced with as they return to Hogwarts to the final battle
  • July 1: Disguises – with the help of Polyjuice Potion, which lets the drinker take on the form of another person, customers can watch character assume another character to accomplish select tasks.
  • July 8: Harry vs. Voldemort – this looks at the creation of the final fight sequence between Harry and Voldemort.

Disney acquires two series from Cake Entertainment for its kid-targeted channels in select countries.  The 3D animated series Oscar’s Oasis (78×7) has been picked up by Disney XD in India, Japan and Benelux and Disney Channel in Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.  Disney Junior takes the preschool series Poppy Cat (52×11) for Spain and Latin America.  Targeted to K6-11, Oscar’s Oasis is a co-production between Tuba Entertainment, TeamTO and Cake.  Poppy Cat is produced by Coolabi Productions and King Rollo Films.

The Hub is set to launch Club Hub, a kid-targeted and family friendly new online virtual community on Hubworld.com ( www.hubworld.com ) this Saturday, June 25.  The multilevel Club Hub will lets kids play regularly updated games, solve puzzles, and vote in polls to help personalize their space on the site called Club Rooms, which are based on The Hub’s programming lineup including locales from shows such as My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, Fraggle Rock, Transformers Prime, and Dan Vs.  Users can create and build their online identity by earning Club Bucks and other virtual rewards and redeeming codes found online, on-air, through give-a-ways at Hub-sponsored events, and included in select products.  Games on Club Hub will include Transformers Prime Terrorcon Defense, Scrabble Sprint and My Little Pony: Adventures in Ponyville.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Sesame Street brand makes its way into the fine art world under a deal with fine art partner Art You Grew Up With.  The agreement was put together by CPLG, the UK licensing agent for the Sesame Street brand.  The new deal will see Art You Grew Up With offer a range of limited edition fine art pieces based on Sesame Street characters.  Art You Grew Up With specializes in classic and original character-based artwork for all ages, which is sold through the company’s website and premium retail outlets such as Selfridges and House of Fraser.  An exhibition of the new art is being planned for September 2011 at the London Victoria branch of House of Fraser.

It’s an Adventure Time t-shirt call to action.  Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and Threadless ( www.threadless.com ) partner to launch a month-long Adventure Time design challenge, which invites fans to create t-shirt designs based on the Cartoon Network animated series Adventure Time.  Up and running now, fans can submit their “adventuring” themed designs inspired by the series and characters at www.atrium.threadless.com/adventuretimeWands are for wimps!

Simon Property Group, owner/developer/manager of retail malls, is set to launch the 2011 Simon dTour Live, a series of mall concerts featuring two up-and-coming bands, We The Kings and Forever The Sickest Kids, across the US on July 9 through August 20.  Sponsored by Coca-Cola and Glee: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray and DVD, which releases on September 13, 2011, the 8th annual Simon dTour Live will stop at 14 Simon malls.  To draw teens, Coca-Cola is inviting teens to take part in its new mobile SCVNGR program, a social location-based game platform for mobile phones.  At the Coca-Cola dTour booth, teens can learn how to use this smart phone app to play the SCVNGR game, get a free mini can of Coca-Cola, and see how they can win prizes at Simon Malls.  Additionally, there will be an interactive Glee Karaoke booth for fans of all ages, and also compete in Glee trivia.  You can find the tour schedule on the Simon dTour Live Facebook page.

RATINGS

Nicktoons‘ premiere of the new Voltron animated series, Voltron Force, with a 90-minute TV movie, Voltron Force: New Defenders Trilogy, on Thursday, June 16 at 8:30p set a new record for the network as the highest rated series premiere across all kid, tween and boy demos.  The Voltron Force debut also earned increases over last year’s like time period with K6-11 (+53%) and Boys 6-11 (+113%).

Disney XD sets new records on Monday, June 20, 2011. With plays of new episodes of its original series Kickin’ It, Pair of Kings and I’m In the Band, 8-9:30p, the network earned its best ratings ever for the 90 time period among K6-11 (498,000) and Tweens 9-14 (413,000).  The new episode of Kickin’ It at 8:30p, the fifth episode in the series that launched last week, hit a series high with Total Viewers (1.2 million), K6-11 (684,000) Boys 6-11 (269,000), Tweens 9-14 (567,000) and Boys 9-14 (210,000).  The series becomes Disney XD’s top original series telecast in its history among Total Viewers, K6-11 and Tweens 9-14.  Additionally, the June 20 episode earned the network its best numbers for the 8:30p half-hour ever with K6-11 and Tweens 9-14.  Disney XD premiered Kickin’ It on Monday, June 13 at 8:30p, which now stands as the network’s top series debut (including as Toon Disney) among Total Viewers (873,000) and Tweens 9-14 (393,000), as well as its top live-action series launch for the network with K6-11 (431,000).
