Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

LAS VEGAS — So I’ve been attending this little thing called the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the past couple of days, where, in-between navigating the absolute gadget-and-people jungle that the trade show is notorious for, there have been some developments in the digital media space. Specifically, the distribution of digital video content has received the attention of many of those who are speaking and presenting during the event. Whether it’s Samsung inking several new partnerships for its line of connected devices (Smart TVs and Blu-ray players), to old media scoring tech deals with new media (Cablevision and Netflix), content distribution and consumption has taken center-stage. Suffice it to say, the show hasn’t entirely been about new nifty toys such as the Sony 4K TV (as cool as that pixelated beast is). Follow along with the daily newsletter to keep track of news coming from Las Vegas this week, most of which will also be available via a post-CES special report that will come out next week and take a deeper look at what’s been happening at the trade show.

By the way, speaking of Samsung, the manufacturer brought on former President Bill Clinton to give a keynote yesterday. One of the focal points of his speech was on how it’s important to get smart mobile devices into the hands of poor people in the developing world. Samsung is one of the manufacturers looking to take command of this market by offering low-end Android phones.


Hemlock Grove, a mystery series from Executive Producer Eli Roth, based on Brian Mcgreevy’s novel of the same name, will be available on Netflix beginning April 19. Starring Famke Janssen, Bill Skarsgard, and Landon Liboiron, the hour-long show revolves around the eccentric residents of a run-down former Pennsylvania steel town and the murder of a 17-year-old girl. An official Netflix Original Series, the show spans 13 episodes, all of which will be available to stream from the very beginning. Roth directed the first episode. The show is executive produced by Roth, McGreevy, Lee Shipman, Mark Verheiden, Deran Sarafian, Eric Newman, and Michael Connolly.

Yahoo en Espanol and Sony Music Latin are teaming up to develop and distribute a series of branded entertainment programs, scheduled to premiere in early 2013. Targeting the US Hispanic audience, the programming slate will span a variety of categories, including beauty, cooking, lifestyle, dance, and music, and will air exclusively on the omg! en Espanol and Mujer channels on Yahoo en Espanol. The shows will feature Sony Music Latin’s roster of musicians and entertainers, including Shakira, Ricky Martin, Marc Anthony, and Pitbull.

Eonline has re-launched its Live from the Red Carpet section in preparation for the upcoming awards season. The new section, which has been given new graphics and photo and video layout, will house The E! Livestream companion show as well as feature the Glam 360 fashion experience and the Heat Gauge social visualization tool. Eonline has also launched a new Live from the Red Carpet mobile app, which, along with the redesigned site section, offers improved live-streaming capabilities. When E!’s red carpet TV coverage cuts to commercials, viewers will be able to go to the site and app to not miss any of the action. In addition, E! is partnering with Facebook to track and display viewer sentiment during its pre-show coverage. 2012 was a big year for Eonline, as the NBCU property reports that its cross-platform video views topped 1 billion total views.

The International Business Time has announced the launch of IBT Media, a global media group that’s comprised of news properties such as the aforementioned publication, business-centric online video portal, and a number of niche lifestyle sites. operates a video hub for topics ranging from personal finance to investments and marketing, all geared toward C-level executives, small business owners, and investors, among other like-minded viewers. The hub is comprised of interviews with executives, lectures, and how-to video content. IBT says media partners will have the ability to earn incremental revenue on their existing video content by aggregating and placing it on the video hub. Inaugural partners include IDG Communications and France 24. is also working with Digitas and PJA Advertising to bring video ads to the hub. IBT Media’s network of lifestyle sites focus on verticals such as automotive, fashion, realty, technology, science, and travel.

KIT digital Content Solutions has rebranded and re-launched as utd. by content. The company offers media management and digital distribution services to the news, media, and entertainment industries. It currently focuses on delivering services and solutions in six areas: Digital cinema (content management, preparation, and distribution services for producers, local film distributors, and others); home entertainment (content preparation and production services to deliver to DVD and Blu-ray, as well as VOD platforms such as iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play); news clips (production, localization, and distribution for news and sports agencies and online publishers); digital platforms (ingestion, metadata and asset management, quality control services, content consulting, and merchandising); managed production workflows; and professional services. The company’s roster of clients include the likes of Warner Bros, FremantleMedia, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, AP, and Disney/ABC.

Correction: Investigation Discovery’s new crime series Redrum premieres on January 15, not January 8. The site that features the interactive transmedia experienced tied to the show was launched on January 8.

TV-over-the-web provider Aereo has closed a $38 million Series B round of financing led by existing investors IAC and Highland Capital Partners. Previous investors from the start-up’s Series A round, including FirstMark Capital, First Round Capital, High Line Venture Partners, and select individuals, also participated in this second round of financing. With this fresh influx of capital, Aereo will be able to expand its live local TV streaming/DVR service to additional US markets. In fact, the start-up announced its intention to do just that. It’s picked 22 initial markets to expand to in 2013, beginning in late spring: Boston, Miami, Austin, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Cleveland, Kansas City, Raleigh-Durham, Salt Lake City, Birmingham (AL), Providence (RI), and Madison (WI).


Local publishing solutions company Worldnow has reached an agreement with Media General to provide the broadcaster’s 18 TV stations with a suite of online services, including digital content management, video, mobile, and national sales support.

Demand Media has purchased Denver-based domain registrar for an undisclosed price. Founded in 2003, customers have registered nearly 1.5 million domains to date, using the company’s tools and services to build their own online presence. Demand says the acquisition is intended to expand its platform as it prepares for the release of new Top Level Domains (TLD) this year. The company’s eNom subsidiary, which it says is the second largest registrar in the world, has over 13.5 million domain names registered by over 8,800 resellers and partners. In 2011, ICANN initiated the process for creating new domain extensions that do away with the current URL structure in favor of creating new, customized, and descriptive web addresses. Last June, ICANN announced it had received 1,930 applications for new TLDs.


SMK Electronics and Hillcrest Labs have unveiled a new “Scoop Pointer” remote control for smart TVs, set-tops, streaming media players, PCs, and other connected devices. To be manufactured and marketed by SMK, the new remote enables in-air pointing and cursor control by combining Hillcrest’s Freespace MotionEngine Lite software with Bluetooth low energy RF technology. The remote also uses Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity technology from Texas Instruments. “Fueled by the increased adoption of pointing-enabled Android and Windows 8 operating systems, advanced pointing controls are now an essential part of all the latest smart TVs and PC devices,” said Chad Lucien, SVP/Sales and Marketing, Hillcrest Labs. The company’s Freespace MotionEngine software currently powers LG’s Magic Remote for smart TVs, smart TV upgrades, and the LG Google TV, as well as Roku 2 streaming media players.


Cloud-based digital analytics platform Anametrix has appointed Christien Louviere as its new Sales Director/Southeast Region and Paul Taft as Sales Director/Northern California Region. Louviere will be based in Atlanta and Taft will be centered in San Francisco.

Outcast Media, the out-of-home video network that operates over 17,000 screens at gas pumps nationwide, has made three additions to its sales team. Eric Davies has joined the company as Senior Director/Sales, Detroit. He comes to Outcast from CBS Interactive. In addition, Wes Waterston has assumed the role of Senior Director/Sales, Central Region (he comes from Bluefin Labs) and Kim Lane has been appointed to Senior Director/Sales, West Region (she’s from Rocket Fuel).
