10.18.10

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 18, 2010, and this is your first early morning briefing.  As always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here

Today’s Premiere:
CBS: The Talk at 2p

Tonight’s Premieres:
Discovery Channel: American Chopper: Senior vs. Junior at 9p & 10p
VH1: Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It at 10p

Over the weekend, viewers in New York and Philadelphia could not watch the first game of the National League Championship Series between Philadelphia and San Francisco due to the continuing retransmission-consent dispute between Fox and Cablevision. The October 15 deadline to settle a new agreement involving the two companies passed without a new retransmission deal and Fox carried out its threat to pull its New York and Philadelphia stations off of Cablevision.  (Cablevision customers in Connecticut did lose WNYW/NY Fox affiliate, but retains the significantly-viewed CT Fox affiliate WTIC/Hartford, and MYTV9/New Haven.  Talks were due to resume yesterday, though no progress happened on Sunday, according to Fox. Both parties did agree to resume negotiations today. Yesterday, Charles Schueler, EVP/Communications at Cablevision released this statement:

“The longer this shameful News Corp. blackout of the NFL and Major League Baseball continues, the more obvious it becomes to everyone, including political leaders of both parties, that binding arbitration is the fastest and fairest way to return Fox programming to Cablevision customers.”

And late on Sunday, Lew Leone, VP/GM of WNYW FOX 5 and WWOR My9, sent out an open letter to Cablevision subscribers. The beginning part of the letter states:

“We understand that the loss of FOX5 and My9 is frustrating and probably has you feeling angry at both companies. We, too, are profoundly disappointed that, despite working hard for many months to avoid this, Cablevision has declined to renew our agreement. But it is important for you, our viewers, to understand why this is happening. We offered Cablevision the exact same price (bold & underline Mr. Leone’s emphasis) that other companies are paying for our stations. But for some reason, Cablevision thinks that it deserves special treatment. Instead of negotiating like a responsible business, Cablevision decided to make this your problem in the hope that if they caused you, the viewer, enough inconvenience, then politicians would intervene. … We’ll continue to talk to Cablevision in hopes of restoring FOX5 and My9 on your lineup.  In the meantime we hope you’ll understand that it is no accident that Cablevision keeps getting into these fights over and over and over again.”

ABC is premiering the new reality competition series Skating with the Stars on November 22 9p. The show will pair up professional ice skaters with celebrities and the duets will perform for judges in front of a live audience. The celebrity cast for the new series will be unveiled November 2 during the live episode of Dancing with the Stars Results show. ABC is also brining back its sci-fi drama series V for a second season beginning January 4 at 9p.

Barbara Billingsley, who played the often parodied though revered June Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver, died on Saturday at the age of 94 at her home in Santa Monica, CA. Ms. Billingsley played glamorous June, the mother who wore pearls and high heels at home and baked endless cookies, from 1957 to 1963 and later in decades of reruns. The role of June Cleaver set a standard for television in post-WWII America and Ms. Billingsley was known to have only respect for her iconic TV role. In real life, Ms. Billingsley was a former model and during her busy acting career, married three times and had periods of being a single working mom to her two sons. Before taking the TV role that she would be known for ever-after, Ms. Billingsley was a contract actress with MGM in the 1940s and early 1950s and appeared in small film roles in Shadow on the Wall (1950), Three Guys Named Mike (1951) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952). Later, she had a revival in her career by appearing in the 1980 comedy film Airplane!, playing a sweet passenger who talks in “jive” with two street-smart characters. Ms. Billingsley also returned to television in the 1980s by making guest appearances on shows such as Mork & Mindy, Amazing Stories, The Love Boat, Murphy Brown and Roseanne among others. She was also the voice of the “nanny” in the animated series Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies. In 1983, Ms. Billingsley reprised her role as June in a television movie, Still the Beaver where she was together again with many of the cast members of the original Leave It to Beaver cast, though Hugh Beaumont, who played her TV husband, Ward had died earlier in 1982. This TV movie then led to a cable series of the same name and later became known as The New Leave It to Beaver. She further had a small role in the 1997 film Leave It to Beaver. Ms. Billingsley is survived by her two sons, Drew Billingsley and Glenn Billingsley.

British actor, Simon MacCorkindale, 58, has died. Mr. MacCorkindale was known to American television viewers for his role as Greg Reardon in CBS’ drama series Falcon Crest, appearing in 59 episodes from 1984 to 1986. Later in England, Mr. MacCorkindale also had success in the British television series Casualty playing the role of Harry Harper for six seasons. He is survived by his second wife, actress Susan George.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

TV One made a deal with writer/producer/director Bentley Kyle Evans (Martin, The Jamie Foxx Show) involving Evans’ company, Bent Outta Shape Productions, Inc. in association with Hazrah Entertainment to produce TV One’s first original, scripted series titled Love That Girl!. Earlier this year in January, Evans and his executive producer partner Martin Lawrence made four special episodes of Love That Girl, airing them on TV One. Now, Evans is bringing together a production team to produce 26 total episodes of the half-hour comedy starring Tatyana Ali. The plot centers on Ali who plays a young divorcee who returns home to southern California for a second chance at life and a career in her father’s real estate business. Martin Lawrence is the executive producer and will also appear in future episodes. Thirteen episodes are finished and the other 13 will be produced in early 2011. Love That Girl! will likely debut in first quarter 2011.

Casting Call: GSN is casting for a new 40-episode Relationship Game Show produced by 3 Ball Productions (The Biggest Loser, Beauty and the Geek) and needs female and male contestants in the age range of 25-45 years. The premise of the show is to use science to help you decide which person to choose. The show is looking for groups of three people: 1 guy who is dating 2 women or 1 woman dating 2 guys. All three people should be willing to be on the show which is described as a modern version of Love Connection or Change of Heart. No dates will happen on this show though you will discover your best “scientific match” through Scientific Profiling using compatibility tests and futuristic images to see what your possible children will look like together and what your daters will look in 20 years. Please send an email to [email protected] or [email protected] to apply and refer your attractive friends. Include your name and age of you, and the 2 guys or women you are dating, your city, contact phone numbers and emails for you the two others, two recent photos (no headshots) of you and the two others, and your story.
