Cynopsis: Kids!
06/14/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

As had been rumored for some time now … Summit Entertainment confirms plans to release The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn as the two separate films, the first scheduled to hit theaters on November 18, 2011.  Based on Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series, both movies will be directed by Bill Condon.  The movies are being written by Melissa Rosenberg with Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Stephenie Meyer producing.  Production begins this fall on the movies, which will again star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along with other returning cast members Billy Burke, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz.  In case you have forgotten, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse releases in theaters on June 30, 2010.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Disney looks to writing duo Kathryn Price and Nichole Millard (The Game Plan) to adapt Lauren Kate’s young adult novel Fallen for the big screen, per Variety.  Fallen is the first in a four book series that was published in December 2009 by Delacorte Books for Young Readers and simultaneously acquired by Disney.  Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray (The Tooth Fairy) are producing the movie.

Scribe David Koepp (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Spider-Man, Angels and Demons, Jurassic Park) is writing a draft of the screenplay for Sony‘s Men In Black 3-D, the third Men in Black (MIB) movie, per Sony Insider by way of MTV.com.  Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two MIB movies, will helm the new 3D movie.  The original script for the new movie was written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa).  According to the reports Will Smith has signed on to reprise his role as Agent Jay, while Tommy Lee Jones is well into negotiations to return as Agent Kay, and Josh Brolin is in talks to play a younger Kay (circa 1969).  The first two MIB movies were rated PG-13.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Franklin Watts/Edge Books, a division of Hachette Children’s Books, will release the four book graphic novel series Sherlock Holmes: The Baer Street Irregulars in spring 2011.  Based on the Baker Street Irregulars, characters mentioned in Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books A Study In Scarlet and The Sign of Four, the graphic novel series is written by Tony Lee and features artwork by Dan Boultwood.  The series follows the Irregulars, including Wiggins who is the only character named by Conan-Doyle, as they work together with Inspector Lestrade and Dr. Watson to defend London from evildoers in Holmes’ absence.  Noted Sherlock Holmes expert Leslie S. Klinger has signed on to serve as a consultant on the four titles, The Adventure Of The Missing Detective, The Adventure Of The Phantom Of Drury Lane’, ‘The Adventure Of The Charge Of The Old Brigade and The Adventure Of The Family Reunion’ released in March 2011.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Paramount, Nickelodeon Movies and Crunchyroll release Become the Avatar, a free interactive social media game based on M. Nigh Shyamalan’s 3D live-action movie The Last Airbender, releasing July 2, 2010.  Featuring visuals from the movie, Become the Avatar invites players to play as any of the four nations (air, water, earth, fire) and can be found on TheLastAirbenderMovie .com and on Facebook ( http://apps.facebook.com/becometheavatar ).  The game was developed by Crunchyroll, working in tandem with Paramount and the filmmakers.  The Last Airbender is based on Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center debuts Star Trek Live, a new live show that takes visitors on a 30-minute exploration of space-age technology and includes special effects and audience interaction.  Produced by Mad Science Productions, under a license from CBS Consumer Products, the show is designed for all ages and aims to encourage science literacy.

Disney Parks & Resorts launches its new end of day World of Color ( www.disneyland.com/worldofcolor or www.worldofcolorcreator.com) show at Disney’s California Adventure Park, which is located next to Disneyland.  The new show, which features Disney characters and water, light, fire and music, is part Disney’s expansion play for the park.  Five years in the making, the World of Color show features about 1,200 programmable fountains, each with its own lighting, color and water height scheme, a water projection screen, 30 HD projectors and a full soundtrack, which includes a range of music from popular Disney movies and TV series.

Scholastic Media names Animal Adventure as its first partner for Toots, the K6-12 targeted brand based on the musical elephant-centric virtual world of Tootsville created by RES Interactive.  Animal Adventure will create a line of plush and backpack clips, which will all include special codes that unlock unique areas and games on the Toots website.  The first eight Toots plush characters are slated to be available at retail this fall 2010.

The Pocoyize iPhone app, launched last week by Zinkia Entertainment, is the second most downloaded app in Spain, and ranks in the top 25 downloaded apps in Japan’s Apple Store.  To date, over six million people have used the Pocoyize app, which is available in seven languages, via social networks and the iPhone.

Turner Broadcasting‘s kid-targeted online tool, Ben 10: Alien Force Game Creator, achieves the 100 million game play milestone across Europe, with 300,000+ games created.  Ben 10: Alien Force Game Creator allows kids to create their own online games and then upload those games to Cartoon Network website where the games can be played, shared and rated by others in each country.  The most popular game so far is Thunder Patrol Rocket, created by an 8-year-old in the UK, has been played 400,000+ times and shared with 270 friends.  Ben 10: Alien Force Game Creator, which is based on Cartoon Network’s series, was launched in the UK in September 2009, and subsequently rolled out across Europe in territories including Italy, Spain, Germany, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, France and Netherlands.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:
Dooley the Leprechaun was featured on what Saturday morning series?  CBS’ Whistling Wizard  Kudos to:  Okay that was a tough one as this shows back to the beginning of Television … here’s an easier one.

Today’s Trivia Question:  Who am I?  I am able to move because of David Joyner.  I’m able to speak because of Bill West.  While I may seem large to my playmates, in truth to my species I’m tiny.  I have nothing but love to give, and yet many tall people find me annoying.  Who am I?    (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
