Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 31, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Twentieth Century Fox new animated movie Rio and Finland-based game developer Rovio Mobile‘s Angry Birds are teaming for a new movie promotion tie-in spin-off app, Angry Birds Rio.  The new Angry Birds Rio game will be available in March around the world, dovetailing (ahem) with the release of the Rio in theaters worldwide on April 15, 2011.  Fans can grab a sneak preview of Angry Birds Rio at http://rio.angrybirds.com .  Angry Birds Rio will launch with 45 dedicated levels and will regularly add new levels via app updates. The game will be available for download on smart phones and tablets worldwide.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Look! In the sky … It’s Henry Cavill … or it will be Cavill playing Superman (and Clark Kent) anyhow.  Cavill, recently seen as Charles Brandon in Showtime’s The Tudors, will take on the role as the man of steel in Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures‘ new Superman movie, which is being directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay by David S. Goyer, based on a story by Goyer and Christopher Nolan.  Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Nolan and Deborah Snyder are serving as producers on the movie.  Currently slated for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Disney Channel is set to begin production on its new multi-camera comedy pilot Austin & Ally this February.  Created and executive produced by Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert (writing/exec. producing credits include Good Burger, Keenan & Kel, Sonny With A Chance, Jonas), the pilot cast includes Ross Lynch, Laura Marano and Raini Rodriguez.  The story revolves around polar opposites, Austin (an extrovert and musician/singer) and Ally (a shy but great songwriter), who partner to become a popular musical duo, and their best friends.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Twin brothers and NBA players Robin Lopez (Phoenix Suns) and Brook Lopez (New Jersey Nets) are teaming with twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse (The Suite Life on Deck, Suite Life of Zack and Cody) to host the weekend long on-air event, Biggest Fans Weekend, on Disney XD, beginning Saturday, February 19 at 11a.  The Biggest Fans Weekend coincides with NBA All-Star Weekend, including the 60th Annual NBA All-Star Game that will be played Sunday, February 20, 2011.

In other Disney XD programming news, the winter installment of its sports-centric short-form Next X reality series, produced in association with ESPN, Winter Next X featuring four tween athletes to showcase their skills at Winter X Games 15, debuts today, Monday, January 31, 2011 at 4p.  New episodes of Winter Next X will air daily all week, culminating in a 15-minute special on Monday, February 7 at 9p.  The series will then be available via DisneyXD.com (www.disneyxd.com ).

MTV Networks International completes a range of new programming deals and series renewals with Broadcasters across Latin America.

  • Ecuavisa (Ecuador) renews its Rugrats deal for seasons 1 through 9, including three specials, as well as resigning for the preschool series Go, Diego, Go seasons 1 through 3.
  • Teledoce (Uruguay) signs on for Back at the Barnyard, while Teletica (Costa Rica) has picks up programming aimed at differing age groups including Back at the Barnyard, Go, Diego, Go!, Ni Hao Kai-Lan, The Mighty B! and Wonder Pets!.
  • Artear (Argentina) acquires seasons 1 through 3 and special episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender, seasons 1 through 3 of The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius and Back at the Barnyard season 2.
  • Televisa  (Mexico) signs up for season 1 of Fan Boy and Chum Chum and season 2 of Back at the Barnyard, while also picking up episodes 140-152 of SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • TV Jamaica (Jamaica) picks up the second seasons of both Rugrats and Rocket Power, as well as seasons 6 and 7 of The Fairly OddParents.
  • Megavision (Chile) completes a deal for the preschool Chinese language series Ni Hao Kai-Lan, episodes 101-110.
  • Provideo (Colombia) inks a deal on behalf of RCN in Colombia for Fairly OddParents seasons 5 and 7, and for renewals and new episodes for SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • America TV (Peru) signed on for episodes and complete seasons on Back at the Barnyard, Fairly OddParents and SpongeBob SquarePants.
  • Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay) picks up additional episodes of Fairly OddParents from season 5 and 6, while Canal 10/ SAETA (Uruguay) takes Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1, 2 and 3, as well as the specials The Legend So Far and The Legend Continues.

HarperCollins Publishers unveils plans to publish The Carrier of the Mark, its first acquisition from inkpop ( www.inkpop.com ), interactive tween writing website.  Slated for fall 2011, The Carrier of the Mark, penned by new author Leigh Fallon from Cork, Ireland, and is a paranormal romance that links two teens to a supernatural destiny.  Over the last year, HarperCollins reports that inkpop traffic has grown nearly 500%, with 60,000+ projects uploaded to the website, and its members spending an average of 20+ minutes on the site per visit.  The coming months will see inkpop acquire more projects, while also providing more young writers with more opportunities to get their ideas in front of HarperCollins Children’s Books editors and ways to get published.  Additionally, inkpop is partnering with entertainment brands and products, including BFF.TV and Dylan’s Candy Bar, on various projects and promotions.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Toei Animation appoints DIC 2 to handle licensing in Italy for the TV series Love in Rock’n’Roll (42×26).  Under the deal, DIC 2 will serve as the licensing agent for Love in Rock’n’Roll for Italy for all merchandising rights, excluding publishing.  Love in Rock’n’Roll revolves around Yakko, who works at her Dad’s restaurant during the day and attends University in the evening.  Yakko becomes torn between two boys, both in the same rock band, leading to all sorts jealousy and intrigue.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Impossible Pictures (Walking With Dinosaurs) appoints Karl Woolley as the head of its Impossible Kids division.  Woolley will oversee Impossible Kids productions, including new commissions Buzz and Tell (52 episodes) for CBeebies (UK), and the animated tween-targeted comedy Fleabag Monkeyface (52 episodes) for CITV (UK).  A veteran of the kids industry, Woolley has served as a host, writer, producer and director, and was MD/Tell-Tale, which created and produced kids programming such as Tweenies.  He has recently worked with Disney UK, Prism Entertainment, Lion Television, Red Planet Films, DC Thomson, Maggie and Rose and Walker Books. 

Julie Strauss-Gable is upped to VP and Publisher, Dutton Children’s Books, part of Penguin Group (USA).  Strauss-Gable has been Associate Publisher.  Dutton Children’s Books will publish 10-15 titles per year, with the boutique imprint focusing on middle grade and young adult works of “exceptional literary quality and strong commercial appeal,” per Publishers Lunch.  This movie will see Lauri Hornik return her energies to Dial, where she continues to serve as Publisher and President.  Dial will grow its publishing plan to 75 titles a year from 50, which will feature some former Dutton authors and illustrators.
