Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, August 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

PBS Kids announces production has begun on Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, a new animated multiplatform series based on the classic PBS series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.  Targeted to preschoolers, the new series is set in the animated version of Rogers’ original Neighborhood of Make Believe and stars four-year-old Daniel Tiger (son of the Daniel Tiger character from Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood) who speaks directly to the at home audience.  Produced by The Fred Rogers Company, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood will launch on TV in fall 2012 on PBS Kids, along with a website that will feature interactive games for kids, resources for parents and teachers, as well as other content.  The new series was developed by The Fred Rogers Company in association with Out of the Blue Enterprises (Super Why).  The Fred Rogers Company also teamed with 9 Story Entertainment on the animation production on this project, as well as game designer Schell Games, which will lead the digital education applications for the property.


Fox sets the release date for its 3D animated feature film Leafmen for May 17, 2013, per Heat Vision.  Chris Wedge (Ice Age, Robots) is directing the action/adventure movie, which is based on the picture book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by author/illustrator/producer/production designer William Joyce (George Shrinks, Rolie Polie Olie, A Day with Wilbur Robinson).  Joyce is also co-directing DreamWorks Animation’s CG animated movie Rise of the Guardians, a movie that is based on his upcoming new picture book series The Guardians of Childhood.


Nickelodeon will mark the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 attacks on the US with a special episode of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, What Happened?: The Story of September 11, 2001, which aims to dispel misconceptions about what actually transpired that day, will premiere Thursday, September 1, at 9p on the network.   Nickelodeon will air the special commercial free and will also offer an online discussion guide specifically for teachers, parents and caregivers to use specifically with K6-14.  The discussion guide was specially designed under a new partnership between Nickelodeon and the American Psychological Association (APA), and will be available via its ( ) ( ), and the APA’s website ( ).  In addition to a group of kids, each directly impacted by the events of that day, the special will feature Aaron Brown, who was then an anchor on CNN, Ari Fleischer, former White House Press Secretary under President George Bush, Juliette Kayyem, former Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, Tom Kean, Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, Akbar Ahmed, American University’s Chair of Islamic Studies, and Bruce Hoffman, Georgetown University Professor and author.  Nick News is produced by Ellerbee’s Lucky Duck Productions.

Nickelodeon moves ahead with a third season of its animated series T.U.F.F. Puppy from Butch Hartman (The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom).  Season three will include 20 new episodes of T.U.F.F. Puppy, for a total of 60 episodes.  The series, stars Jerry Trainor (iCarly) as the voice of Dudley Puppy, and also features the voices of Grey DeLisle (The Fairly OddParents), Jeff Bennett (The Penguins of Madagascar), Daran Norris (The Fairly OddParents), and Matthew Taylor (Open Season).  T.U.F.F. Puppy launched on Nickelodeon in the US in October 2010, will debut on Nickelodeon Australia later this month, followed by other international channels also this month.

The Hub adds notable music industry names, such as Avril Lavigne, Adam Lambert, Colbie Caillat, and singer/songwriter Claude Kelly, to the lineup of artists that will help mentor twelve aspiring 10-16 year old singers on its new reality series Majors & Minors, which is set to premiere on the network Friday, September 23, 2011.  Artists that have already signed on to serve as mentors on the series include Brandy, Leona Lewis, Jordin Sparks, Sean Kingston, Mike Posner and One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, with others to be announced.  Developed by songwriter Evan “Kidd” Bogart (he’s written songs for Rihanna and Beyonce), and producers Timothy Scott Bogart and Gary A. Randall, Majors & Minors is produced by The Boardwalk Entertainment Group in partnership with Sony Music’s RCA/Jive Label Group and BMI.

Hallmark Movie Chanel will host a family movie marathon on Saturday, August 13, beginning at 6a.  The channel will feature family friendly movies including Polly, Herbie Rides Again, Pollyanna, Swiss Family Robinson, That Darn Cat, and its premiere of the class movie Bedknobs & Broomsticks.


A new soundtrack and DVD inspired by Disney Junior‘s preschool animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates are set for release this fall.  Walt Disney Records will release the album on September 20, followed a week later by Disney Studios’ release of the new DVD Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yu Ho, Mateys Away!, which will include seven episodes of the series, on September 27.  The album is written/performed by Loren Hoskins and Kevin Hendrickson, two members of The Never Land Pirate Band, and also includes downloadable activities and games for pirate-themed parties, a sing-along version of series theme song, and a new track from an upcoming episode.  Additionally, the deluxe edition of the album includes a pirate bandana.  Meanwhile, The Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Yo Ho, Mateys Away! DVD comes packaged with a bonus 7-track CD sampler and a pirate eye patch.

Dora and Boots set out on three-part adventures in the upcoming TV special and DVD title Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures.  Set to premiere on Nickelodeon in November, Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures will be available first on DVD from September 13, 2011.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment the DVD is distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.  Additionally, the DVD features an offer for a one-year free subscription to Parents magazine for a limited time.

Studio100 and Egmont Kids Media enter into a publishing partnership for the preschool property Maya the Bee in Central and Eastern Europe, including the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).  The deal will see Egmont develop and publishing a range of storybooks, activity, audio and novelty books, in addition to branded magazines based on the new CGI animated Maya the Bee (78×15) series.  The books will be released in local markets in conjunction with the debut of the TV series each respective territory.  The series is slated to debut on national channels in Central and Eastern Europe in 2013.  A CGI animated feature film is also in the works.

Sesame Workshop and Playtime, a provider of interactive play areas, enter into an exclusive licensing deal to create molded Sesame Street indoor play areas for malls, shopping centers, and various other locations.  Playtime and Sesame Street design teams are currently developing design concepts, while Playtime ( ) is also looking for partners to work with on a multi-year rollout of the Sesame Street branded indoor play areas.  Under the agreement, Playtime’s Sesame Workshop licensing deal allows for a long-term leasing structure providing partners with the ability to obtain the branded play area without the usual upfront capital costs generally associated with a traditional purchase, and allows partners to bring a third party national or community sponsor into the mix.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and Santa Cruz Skateboards have joined together to create a new line of shreddable and collectable Simpsons skateboards.  The new line of Simpsons skateboards, which is aimed at hardcore skaters and collectors, will roll out beginning this fall with a custom Bart Simpson cruzer, boards in different shapes (including one shaped like a Duff Beer can  yeah that one is not for the kids).
