Good morning. It’s Friday, August 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

PBS Kids aims to get kids ready to kick off the school year right and stay healthy and active throughout the year with the PBS Kids Eat Smart for a Great Start multiplatform initiative.  Developed by PBS Kids, the effort includes themed TV programming, online content, and partnerships with Allrecipes.com ( www.allrecipes.com ) and Produce for Kids ( www.produceforkids.org ), all of which will provide kids and parents/caregivers with resources to support health and physical activity.  The resources can be found at PBSParents.org/eatsmart ( www.pbsparents.org/eatsmart).

  • On-air TV programming: PBS will feature food and exercise-themed episodes of its programming of many of its series all fall to keep kids making healthy food and exercise choices, including The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That!, Curious George, Sid the Science Kid, Sesame Street and Arthur.
  • Online  PBS Kids (
  • www.pbskids.org ) and PBS Parents ( www.pbsparents.org ) have developed online resources to support health and nutrition.  Kids can play educational games and view related clips and episodes on PBSKids.org/eatsmart (pbskids.org/eatsmart) beginning this September.  Additionally, parents/caregivers can sign up online for a four-week free program that will feature a daily tip, Mondays-Fridays, from September 5.

  • Partner activities  in addition to contributing to the daily tips program, partners Allrecipes.com and Produce for Kids are both featuring PBS Kids characters on their respective websites, including PBS Kids Go! original web series Fizzy’s Lunch Lab, which helps promote healthy/nutritious foods for school.

As part of their multiyear partnership to promote Healthy Habits for Life, Sesame Workshop and UnitedHealthcare launch two different kid-centric updated health initiatives, A is for Asthma and Lead Away!, both of which are designed to help kids and families learn about these two issues as well as promote healthy habits.  Additionally, UnitedHealthcare is an on-air sponsor of Sesame Street and supports Food for Thought: Eating Well on a Budget.

  • A is for Asthma (www.sesamestreet.org/asthma )  this is a bilingual (English and Spanish) education effort featuring Grover and Big Bird.  Through videos, activity sheets and newsletters, the program aims to help raise awareness and also teach families more about childhood asthma.  The program offers tips and resources for kids and their families to assist in recognizing asthma triggers and to manage symptoms.
  • Lead Away! (www.sesamestreet.org/lead )  also a bilingual program, here Bert and Ernie help families learn about lead poisoning prevention, lead testing, and raise awareness and understanding about the health risks of lead.  The program includes videos, activity sheet, and a newsletter featuring Sesame Street characters.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox 2000 is moving ahead with the third Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie, which are all based on the eponymous book series by Jeff Kinney, per VarietyDiary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is set for release on August 3, 2012, with David Bowers (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules) returning to direct the picture from a script by Maya Forbes and Wally Wolodarsky.  Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will produce the picture under their Color Force production company. Production on the movie began in Vancouver last week with much of the cast returning, including Zachary Gordon, Robert Capron, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, and Steve Zahn.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Season two of the preschool series the WotWots will premiere Monday August 22, 2011on TV2 (New Zealand), where it will air weekdays at 8:50a.  From Pukeko Pictures, the WotWots can now be seen in 90 territories.  American Greetings Properties recently signed on for the worldwide licensing and merchandising rights to the property.

Amar’e Stoudemire, NBA All-Star and New York Knicks captain, signs a deal with Scholastic to publish the new kid’s chapter book series, STAT: Standing Tall and Talented.  Targeted to middle-grader readers, the book series aims to turn kids, particularly boys, into readers and is set to launch with the release of the first book, STAT #1: Home Court on August 1, 2012 in hardcover and paperback.  STAT: Standing Tall and Talented takes its name from Stoudemire’s nickname and will be based on his life.  Further titles in the series will release in October 2012 and January 2013.

Disney UK plans to release The Lion King in 3D in movie theaters across the UK and Ireland for a four-week engagement in early October 2011, per THR.  The release comes just ahead of the release of the movie on HD Disney Blu-ray, 3D Blue-ray and DVD in November in the UK and the 5,000th performance of the musical stage show in London.  Additionally, The Lion King in 3D will get its TV premiere on Sky 3D in December, and then the subscription Disney Cinemagic service in early 2012.  In the US, The Lion King in Disney Digital 3D will get a special two-week theatrical release from September 16, followed by the home entertainment release October 4, with the Diamond Edition release in HD Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D.  The Lion King: Diamond Edition will be available for limited time as follows: 4-disc Blu-ray Combo Pack  (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray 2D and DVD and Digital Copy); 2-disc Combo Pack (Blu-ray 2D and DVD); 8-Disc Trilogy (Blu-ray 3D and Blu-ray 2D, DVD, and Digital copy; The Lion King 1 1/2″  Blu-ray and DVD; The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride  Blu-ray 2D and DVD).  The single disc DVD Edition of the movie will release November 15.

Correction: The Hub‘s sweepstakes will run during the first two new episodes of Family Game Night on September 2 (7p and 8p) and then the following week during the September 9 episode (7p).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Skechers USA, a US-based footwear company, inks a multi-year licensing deal with The Licensing Management Group (LMG) to develop the Skechers across Southeast Asia.  Under the deal, LMG will offer strategic opportunities to leverage the brand as a multifaceted lifestyle brand for kids, women and men throughout Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.  The Skechers brand has grown across Asia, where there is now a network of 120+ retail stores in Southeast Asia as well as in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.  In addition to its new deal with LMG, Skechers currently has licensees include a worldwide partnership with Viva International Group (eyewear); a multi-year partnership with Li & Fung’s LF USA for Skechers Fitness (apparel and accessories) in the US; and a range of international partnerships, including apparel in China, South Korea, Israel and India; bags in Panama; and watches in the Philippines. Skechers also has licensing agreements for kids’ apparel, socks, watches, bags, luggage and medical scrubs, among others, and continues to seek new opportunities around the world.
