11/17/15: NBC Sports nabs a Universal package; NASCAR finale draws a double; No relief for fantasy sites

Good morning. It’s Tuesday November 17, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

With Universal Sports Network now dark, NBCUniversal formally announced the acquisition of its assets, including agreements with international and national governing bodies for Olympic-sport events in swimming, track and field, gymnastics, figure skating, skiing, cycling, triathlon, volleyball, and more. Content will, of course, be housed under the NBC Sports Group umbrella, including NBCSN, Universal HD, and NBC Sports Live Extra. Upcoming major events that NBC Sports will now carry include: the FIS Alpine World Cup season; the USA Swimming Arena Pro Swim Series; the IAAF World Indoor Championships; and the 2016 Boston Marathon.

“Acquiring these valuable media rights builds on our long-term investment in the Olympic Games through 2032, and reaffirms our commitment to Olympic sports and the stories of the great athletes who compete in them,” said Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics, a division of NBC Sports Group. “We now have a great opportunity to engage with the Olympic-sport audience year round and inspire the next generation of Olympic fans, which is a critical part of our ongoing Olympic strategy.”

ON THE AIR

Meanwhile, NBC Sports also announced dual national coverage of the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship race from Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 22. NBC will serve as the primary broadcast of the primary broadcast while NBCSN will offer fans a simultaneous live feed dedicated to each of the Championship 4 drivers. Live race coverage on both NBC and NBCSN begins at 3p. The NBCSN Hot Pass multi-window display will hand fans “an in-depth look at Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr.”, with up to three different angles from in-car cameras, while a dynamic track map keeps viewers aware of Championship 4 driver positions and changes throughout the field. Leigh Diffey and Dale Jarrett host NBCSN Hot Pass coverage as the Championship 4 compete for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

The NFL on CBS nabbed its highest-rated game window of the year on Sunday, anchored by the nail-biting Patriots win over the Giants. The game marked an average overnight household rating/share of 18.3/32, for a 5% markup over last year’s 17.4/31 in Nielsen metered markets.

Around the dial on NBC, SNF saw the Cardinals’ victory over the Seahawks deliver a 12.6/21 in overnight scores. The is up 14% over last year’s NFL game to continue a trend which has seen 10 of NBC’s 11 SNF games have grown this season over 2014 numbers. Top local markets: Seattle 48.4/70; Phoenix 32.2/47; Portland 24.4/37; Albuquerque 17.7/27; Las Vegas 17.6/28.

Telemundo will keep Andres Cantor in the house into the next decade. The channel locked up the announcer through the 2022 World Cup and ensures that he will remain the lead broadcaster and play by play announcer for both Telemundo and NBC Universo, including the upcoming Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia and the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. "Andres will play a central role in the broadcast of the most important sports events of Telemundo’s and NBC Universo’s history,” said Luis Silberwasser, President of Telemundo Network and NBC Universo. “An experienced and highly respected soccer expert, Andres has been the face and voice of our sports programming and we look forward to continue working with him for years to come.”

CBS Sports selected its SEC on CBS game for Nov. 28. At 3:30p, the network will carry Alabama/Auburn in the 80th edition of the Iron Bowl. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce call the contest.

FOX Sports announced that today’s coverage of France/England will be expanded as the French national team plays its first match since Friday’s attacks on Paris. The international friendly will offer live pregame coverage that includes a reporter on-site, pre-kick walkouts and both national anthems, with Wembley reportedly set to display the words to the French national anthem, Le Marseillaise, on screens. Coverage begins tomorrow at 2:30p on FS1, with kick-off scheduled for 3p. FOX Deportes airs a two-hour special edition of FOX Deportes en Vivo prior to the match at 1p.

Europe’s Sport1 GmbH extended its rights package from ESPN Media Distribution through the 2017/18 season with the package set run on pay-TV channel SPORT1 US with rights to NCAA College Football and College Basketball as well as the Verizon IndyCar Series. When the NCAA College Basketball season opens, SPORT1 US will again show at least 130 games live or tape-delayed with the original US commentary.

A few other items of note:

  • UFC 193 drew a crowd of 56,214, marking the largest attendance for an event in UFC history. This event broke the previous attendance record of 55,724, set at UFC 129 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on April 30, 2011.
  • The Chicago Cubs’ Crane Kenney told Chicago radio station WSCR that the club will launch its own network by 2020 at the latest and can opt out of a recently-struck deal with Comcast Sportsnet. USA Today writes that a Cubs station could be valued at as much as $3 billion.

OVG is already working with a roster of iconic sports and live entertainment brands for its Arena/Stadium Alliance including, Prudential Center, Philips Arena, Madison Square Garden (MSG), the Forum, and Tampa Bay’s Amalie Arena.

The Jacksonville Jaguars unveiled a new partnership with Uber in a deal that sees the launch of in-app access to promotionally priced tickets for fans taking a ride to EverBank Field on game day. The intiative kicks off on Thursday ahead of the team’s matchup against the Titans on TNF. Fans will be prompted to select up to four lower level tickets on the app at a promotionally-priced rate and will be billed directly through Uber.

FOX Sports Digital saw Holly Holm’s knockout of Ronda Rousey deliver a punch to its platforms on Sunday. FOXSports.com scored its highest day of unique visitors (+162% year-over-year), visits (+152%), and page views (+77%) in more than a year.  In addition, 7 of the 10 most-viewed videos on FOXSports.com on Sunday were related to Holm-Rousey fight.

Italian football club A.S. Roma is partnering with Maker Studios to create original, digital content, expand their commercial partnerships, and grow the brand’s overall digital presence working with gaming and sports focused talent around the globe. The tandem will look to develop and create original content featuring talent from Maker’s network; work to grow the A.S. Roma YouTube presence through channel management and optimization best practices; expand distribution of A.S. Roma content across digital platforms; extend A.S. Roma’s commercial reach creating unique branded entertainment initiatives and streamlined media sales; and ?dentify and recruit new creators to join an A.S. Roma sub-community of Maker focused specifically on gaming and sports content

FANTASY/GAMING/ESPORTS

A move from DraftKings and FanDuel to nab temporary restraining orders to prevent New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman from shutting down daily fantasy play in the state has been blocked. Late Monday, a judge ruled against the companies and set another hearing for November 25, according to Bloomberg News. With the decision, Schneiderman said he would now seek an order forcing the companies to stop accepting entries from New York, according to the report.

An investment group led by two of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings co-owners purchased a spot in the League Championship Series, according to the Daily Dot. The team will be called NRG Esports and owned by Andy Miller and Mark Mastrov.
