PRODUCTION NOTES

Get ready for a Sofia the First primetime special on Disney Channel. Amber discovers Sofia’s amulet is magical and takes it without permission, inadvertently summoning an evil princess who tries to take over Enchancia in the special, which airs Sunday, Nov. 23, at 7p. As is the Disney way these days, a full-length preview of the special and new game will debut early on WATCHDisneyJunior.com and the WATCH Disney Junior app for smartphones and tablets–beginning Monday, Nov. 10.

Jelly Jam Entertainment worked with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence to create the curriculum for new brand The Moodsters, designed to help kids learn how to understand and handle their emotions. The property, slated to launch in 2015 via apps, books, toys and other digital content, features five characters, each depicting a different emotion. "The Moodsters prepares children for success in the real world by giving them tools and simple strategies they can use to manage their thoughts, feelings and behavior,” says Jelly Jam principal and child development expert Denise Daniels. “For parents, The Moodsters are learning tools which help teach children the fundamentals of feelings."

MORE KIDS NEWS

Attendees at last Friday’s homecoming football game for Capital City High School in Charleston, WV, got an unexpected sideshow, according to Fierce Cable. Fans got an official visit from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, repping the Nickelodeon property that recently was removed along with other Viacom content from the city’s cable system, Suddenlink, due to a carriage dispute. "We’re going directly to them and reaching out face-to-face," Viacom spokesman Mark Jafar told The West Virginia Gazette. "We’d love to get a deal done, but it doesn’t appear that will happen anytime soon."

The New Secrets of Kids Branding: Hot Marketing Success Stories
TOMORROW! Oct. 30, 2014 | 1:30PM to 3:00PM ET | Register Now

We’ll present up-to-the-minute, fresh approaches to trends in the ever-evolving brand integration market for kids. We’ll share the skills needed for all the biggest platforms, from streaming services (like Netflix and Amazon) to web content and offer fresh, inventive strategies so you can keep up with Generation Z … and their savvy parents.

DIGITAL UPDATE

PBS Kids wants to whet appetites for its new series Odd Squad by debuting full-length streaming video content and new digital games from the series one month prior to its network premiere. The videos comprise the most full-length content PBS Kids has ever made available to viewers in advance of an on-air series premiere. Odd Squad, which premieres Wednesday, Nov. 26, focuses on two young agents, Olive and Otto, who are part of an agency whose mission is to save the day whenever something unusual happens in their town. A math concept is embedded in each of their cases. Starting yesterday, kids are able to watch six full-length stories, called “Case Files,” for free through PBS Kids’ streaming video platforms on pbskids.org, the PBS Kids Video App and on PBS Kids on Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast and Amazon Fire. Two games, Down the Tubes and Catch the Centigurps, and parent/caregiver resources are also be available the Odd Squad website.

More PBS news: PBS Digital Studios will get a Halloween-themed makeover this week as it anticipates the finale of its first scripted series, Frankenstein, MD. The finale will premiere this Friday at noon ET; the main character, Victoria, will post extras to the final show’s story on Twitter and her blog leading throughout the week. Additionally, other programming will get a bit spookier: Coma Niddy released a new fearful rap on Monday; PBS Game/Show talked about the evolution of the horror game genre in yesterday’s new ep; PBS Idea Channel will discuss all things horror in the movie, TV and news industry (new ep today); It’s Okay to Be Smart explains the science behind irrational fears (Oct. 30).

As of tomorrow, Amazon will debut six new eps of its original series Annedroids. from J.J. Johnson (Dino Dan) and Sinking Ship Entertainment, on Prime Instant Video.

While not for the youngest set, in what sounds an awful lot like a bid to woo audiences who love The Simpsons and Family Guy, Netflix ordered new animated comedy series F Is For Family, from Bill Burr and Vince Vaughn. The streaming service’s deal with Gaumont International Television and Wild West Television is for six half-hour episodes, slated to debut in 2015. Burr will voice one of the proud pop of a ‘70s family; Laura Dern is voicing his wife and Justin Long lends his voice to the family’s son.

Just in time for Halloween, on its official digi-blog Oh My Disney!, the Mouse House has once and for all time declared Scar the most villainous of all Disney villains. And it does so via a catchy new tune and video, “Counting Scars.”

Online family entertainment company DRIVER Digital channels Cool School and The Rundown! Are now available on Roku devices. Cool School has 72,000 subscribers, 52 million lifetime views and four million monthly views on YouTube, while The Rundown touts 75,000 subscribers, 25 million lifetime views and two million monthly views.

Speaking of villains, anyone still have nightmares about Harry Potter ice woman Professor Dolores Umbridge (played by Imelda Staunton in the films), who inflicts more than an emotional scar on our hero in “Order of the Phoenix”? Pottermore.com announced that as a special Halloween treat, J.K. Rowling will post a 1,700-word account of Umbridge’s backstory on the website.

Japan’s Fuji Television Kids Entertainment signed an exclusive agreement with Oznoz to debut its iconic preschool series Be Ponkickies on the North American bilingual digital platform. Oznoz has acquired 26 half-hour eps in Japanese, which will sit along side other Japanese content such as Sesame Street, Babar, Ruby Gloom and On-Chan. Included in the deal is the right for Oznoz to dub the show into English and other languages.

GAMES & APPS

Cupcake Digital is collaborating with Nelvana Enterprises to create a series of apps based on the long-running series Max & Ruby on Nick Jr., inspired by the classic Rosemary Wells books. Apps will roll out beginning in December and will be available on the App Store, Amazon Appstore for Android and Google Play, as well as for Nook and Nabi devices. Cupcake is kicking off the first digital product with the creation of a baking-themed app, inspired by the many TV episodes that feature cooking and family.

Oceanhouse Media launched two new book apps from Mercer Mayer’s Little Critter seriesThe Best Teacher Ever and Just Critters Who Careand one new Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library app, Oh Say Can You Say What’s the Weather Today?

LICENSING

eOne Licensing is bringing home the bacon to the printed page. The company’s preschool brand Pegga Pig now has a new dedicated magazine from Redan Publishing. The bimonthly Fun To Learn Peppa Pig Magazine launches this month at U.S. retailers Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million and Kroger. eOne also added partners to its roster of Peppa Pig licensees: Better Toyz, Fiesta Toys and Primary Colors Corp.

PARTNERSHIPS & PROMOTIONS

Education and health professionals worldwide will have free access to tools to help introduce kids 4-10 to the subject of healthy lifestyles and nutrition via Lawless Entertainment’s launch of a new Nutri Ventures-branded Nutri-Guardians Project and website (www.nutri-guardians.com) The initiative offers free teaching materials including language, math and physical education worksheets, as well as videos, songs, and teaching aids for nutrition and diet health.

The guide will launch across 500 schools and camps nationwide and children will be encouraged to take on Fit For Sport’s Activity Challenge, which tests kids’ agility, balance and coordination and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

INTERNATIONAL

Guess How Much I Love You? More than last week. 9 Story Media Group secured additional sales for the preschool series The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare, based on the best-selling children’s book. Already a staple on Disney Junior in the States, the show extended its reach to the Middle East, Central Europe and Iceland. It was recently green-lit for a second season.

The Jungle Bunch, from TAT Productions and Master Films, is headed to Turner’s Boomerang, which acquired pay TV rights to the series in Europe and Southeast Asia, in a deal brokered by PGS Entertainment. The show is available in 180 territories.
