09/03/15: Hulu adds ad-free subscription tier; CBS and Verizon ramp up digital NFL content; PewDiePie becomes most subscribed-to YouTuber in history

TOP NEWS

Seinfeld binge-watchers can finally breathe a sigh of relief: Hulu announced that it’s starting an ad-free version of its streaming service. Unlike rivals Netflix and Amazon, Hulu’s premium content has always featured commercials. “There are clearly people who just are not going to buy Hulu because there are ads,” acknowledged CEO Mike Hopkins. “We think we can bring them back into the fold with new content and this new choice.” But Hulu isn’t shoving advertisers out the door: The ad-supported platform will still exist, at a subscription price of $8 per month. The commercial-free service will cost $12.

The streaming revolution is hitting the gridiron. CBS announced that it will stream numerous NFL games during the 2015-2016 season, including multiple regular season games in addition to four playoff games, and the Super Bowl, announced earlier. Viewers won’t have to pay a dime, or even have a cable subscription. In addition to their computers and tablets, viewers can watch on streaming devices like Roko and Apple TV.

And Verizon Wireless is not to be outdone: the company announced that, for no extra monthly charge, its free NFL Mobile app will now offer users livestreaming of Sunday local games, as well as Thursday, Sunday and Monday Night Football games.

OTT + SVOD


The CW’s DC universe got too big for linear alone. August 25 saw the premiere of Vixen, a six-part animated series airing weekly on OTT site CW Seed. The digital-exclusive series, about a female superhero who communicates with animals, shares a universe with CW shows The Flash, Arrow and 2016’s Legends of Tomorrow. A week after the show’s debut, Rick Haskins, The CW’s Executive VP for Marketing and Digital Platforms, told Decider that “Vixen [is] a great opportunity to promote CW Seed…[and] push into the launches of The Flash and Arrow.” The Vixen finale airs the week before the two shows premiere.

Did Alibaba just release the Chinese Netflix? The e-commerce company has launched a beta version of Tmall Box Office, a video streaming subscription service. TBO plans to offer third-party shows and original content produced by Alibaba. Time will tell if how many paying subscribers TBO can pick up – Chinese streaming services such as Youku Tudou and iQiyi have had a notoriously difficult time getting Chinese viewers to pay for content.

Season 7 of the hit British series Doc Martin will make its U.S. debut on October 5, airing exclusively on the streaming service Acorn TV. The series airs on ITV in the U.K.

CONTENT MEDIA


People really, really like watching this guy play video games. Felix Kjellberg, AKA YouTube giant PewDiePie, reached 39 million subscribers on Monday, August 31. The Guinness Book of World Records has officially weighed in: that’s more subscribers than anyone else – ever.

No one can control the weather, but The Weather Channel is making it easier to learn about it. The network is now offering TV Everywhere across numerous providers, including AT&T, Cablevision, DirecTV, and Time Warner Cable. The livestream is available via computer, phone, and tablet on weatherchannel.com.

Cartoon Network’s Regular Show: The Movie is now available for streaming download. Based on JG Quintel’s animated series Regular Show, the film is available on EST platforms including iTunes, Google Play, and Amazon Instant Video. Regular Show: The Movie is Cartoon Network’s first original feature-length film.

Leave it to the You’re the Worst cast to make you feel worse about your life. Ahead of the September 9 premiere of FXX’s comic anti-romance, stars Aya Cash and Chris Geere have released 11 in-character “Worst Greetings” video grams. Around 30 seconds in length, the bitingly cynical videos feature titles such as “OWN THAT HANGOVER” and “YOU’RE ENGAGED! Yay…?”  They’re designed to be shared with friends and co-workers on social media, but be warned: Cash and Greere aren’t likely to win you friends.

DIGITAL INFLUENCERS


Production company Citizen Skull Productions has launched CSP Management, a management division representing actors, writers, DPs, directors and social media influencers. CSP Management aims to broaden influencers’ digital profiles and help them cross platforms into film and television. Clients include Sienna Spalding, Nessa Varez and Lynette Cenee


NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS


Swedish media company Modern Times Group is diving deeper into digital. MTG CEO Jorgen Madsen Lindemann announced that the company has acquired Turtle Entertainment, an e-sports firm based in Germany. Turtle operates ESL (the Electronic Sports League), which hosts numerous gaming leagues in tournaments. MTG has made other digital investments this year: In July, the company purchased multi-channel networks Zoomin. TV and Splay.

Sneaky Pete finally has a home: Amazon issued a series order. The company placed the pilot on its Instant Video platform on August 7. Co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures TV, the Giovanni Ribisi-starring drama was co-created by Bryan Cranston and David Shore. Ribisi plays a con man who assumes the identity of his former cellmate after leaving prison. Numerous networks and streaming services had expressed interest in the project after CBS passed in May.

EXECUTIVE MOVES


It takes serious pros to achieve true absurdity. Funny or Die announced two major moves, hiring Owen Burke as Editor-in-Chief (a newly created position) and Chris Bruss as President of Digital Content. Burke previously EP‘d the Funny or Die-produced The Chris Gethard Show for Fusion and ran the TV department for Will Ferrell and Adam McKay‘s Gary Sanchez Productions. Bruss has been with Funny or Die since 2009, serving as VP of Branded Entertainment.

Digital music and entertainment platform Vevo named Jon Carvill VP of Communications. Carvill now leads all of Vevo’s public relations and corporate communications efforts. He previously served as VP of Corporate Communications at billion-dollar tech startup Globalfoundries.
