IN THE NEWS

A change.org petition calling on Jon Stewart to moderate a presidential debate, started by a high school social studies teacher in New Jersey, had gathered close to 300,000 signatures by Sunday. Among Stewart’s qualifications cited: During his 16-year run as host of The Daily Show, he interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States cabinet and 32 members of the United States Senate, and the late nighter received Peabody Awards for coverage of the 2000 and 2004 elections under his watch. Stewart, who signed off Comedy Central on August 6, hosted WWE PPV event SummerSlam last night.

Three years after entering the U.S. market, Atlantic Broadband has claimed a spot as the country’s 12th largest cable operator, following its $200 million acquisition of MetroCast from Harron Communications. “This transaction enhances our growth profile through the planned launch of new residential services such as TiVo and Metro Ethernet for business,” said Louis Audet, CEO of Canada’s Cogeco Cable, owner of Atlantic.

A preview of the first episode of season two of El Rey’s From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is now available on select VOD platforms in advance of the drama’s linear debut tomorrow (August 25). Subscribers of Comcast’s Xfinity TV, Dish and Time Warner Cable, among others, will also have access to season one in its entirety, as well as bonus content.

The Casting Society of America announced TV, theater, web and short film nominees for its 31st annual Artios Awards. Nods for TV drama went to Bloodline, Empire, Game of Thrones, House of Cards and The Good Wife. Comedy candidates are Episodes, Orange Is the New Black, Silicon Valley, Transparent and Veep.

Stuntwoman Jane Austin was the surprise winner in the race for president of SAG-AFTRA’s LA local. The Membership First candidate beat Unite for Strength incumbent Clyde Kusatsu by just 105 votes. PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

ABC gave a pilot order to Marvel’s Most Wanted. Starring Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood, superhero series centers on their S.H.I.E.L.D. characters.

Simon Helberg, who plays Big Bang Theory’s Howard, struck a two-year deal with Big Bang studio Warner Bros. Television. Pact calls for Helberg and his wife, Jocelyn Towne, to develop series through their production banner, Wildline Entertainment.

CBS gave a put pilot commitment to Sawyer & Huck, a reimagining of classic Mark Twain characters Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Project comes from Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva) and CBS Television Studios.

With his black-ish going strong at ABC, creator Kenya Barris inked a three-year overall deal with ABC Studios. Barris will remain exec producer of the comedy, as well as developing new projects for network, cable and streaming services.

Shondaland sold comedy Splitsville to ABC. Writers for the project are Trophy Wife creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins.

Call for Cynsiders: It’s a turbulent time in the television industry, and the ride is only going to get wilder with monetization models threatened, new players competing for market share and more and arguably better content than ever before. Cynopsis is looking for thought leaders to help make sense of it all, offering insights and addressing issues of the day in the worlds of programming, marketing and measurement in our weekly column, Cynsiders. Please email [email protected] if you’d like to jump into the conversation with our 200,000+ readers from the media industry.

There will be a change at the top for upcoming Chicago Fire spin-off Chicago Med. “Andrew Dettmann won’t be continuing as an executive producer on Chicago Med,” said NBC and Universal Television. “The network and studio value their relationship with Andy and plan to continue on other projects together.” The cause is reportedly “creative differences.” The Dick Wolf drama, originally slated to launch midseason, was pushed up to Tuesday, November 17 when fellow hospital series Heartbreaker was delayed due to star Melissa George’s pregnancy.

Imagine TV (Empire) landed a put pilot commitment from NBC for a family drama focused on Cuban exiles in Miami, written by Ian Edelman (How to Make It in America) and directed by David Frankel (The Devil Wears Prada).
