PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Family drama House Of The Rising Sin, created by Scandal co-exec producer Judy Smith, is in development at NBC. From 20th TV, the series is written by Jeremy Miller and Daniel Cohn (Entourage) and revolves around three generations of a corrupt political family in New Orleans.

Executive producers Rob Worsoff and Brian Wendel signed an overall deal at Gurney Productions through their new shingle ThunderPants Entertainment. Under the agreement, Worsoff and Wendel will develop projects for film and television. The two have produced content for National Geographic, A&E, MTV, Bravo, VH1 and CBS.

Duncan Gray, who’s held senior posts at ABC, ITV and Sky, launched production company Twenty Six 03. Gray’s new company will focus on producing primetime content.

COMING UP

Univision Network’s El Gordo y La Flaca (The Scoop and the Skinny) on Saturday, August 22, at 7p will present “Un Tributo Gigante”. Special honors the network’s top-rated and longest-running variety show, Sabado Gigante, which will finish its run September 19 after 53 years on-air.

truTV’s Impractical Jokers foursome – Joe, Sal, Q and Murr – celebrate their 100th episode with their most challenging dare yet: a high-wire walk five stories in the air above NYC during the show’s first-ever live punishment spectacular. Howie Mandel plays host on Thursday, September 3 at 10p.

Outdoor Channel is commemorating the 100th episode of Heartland Bowhunter with a special premiering Monday, August 24, at 11p. The two-parter highlights the journey of hosts and lifelong hunters Michael Hunsucker and Shawn Luchtel.

TV One is partnering with the National Action Network (NAN) and Reverend Al Sharpton to present the first televised airing of The Triumph Awards on Friday, October 10, at 8p. Now in its sixth year, the event honors individuals who have made a positive impact in their community in addition to professional contributions in their respective fields. Honorees include Wanda Sykes and Tyrese Gibson.

Hallmark Channel is once again going to the dogs. The net will air fifth annual American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards on Saturday, October 30, at 9p. TV personality, author and animal advocate Beth Stern and actor James Denton (Good Witch, Desperate Housewives) return as co-hosts of the awards, which celebrate our four-legged friends and the ways they enrich, protect, and save lives every day.

NEW SERIES

Investigation Discovery announced two new series for the fall. In a nod to the 1993 Robert Redford/Demi Moore film of the same name, Indecent Proposal presents people with an opportunity that could drastically change their lives, but would force them to do something immoral. Series debuts Saturday, August 22, at 10p and 10:30p… Death By Gossip With Wendy Williams, now set to premiere Friday, September 4, at 9p, uncovers crimes fueled by rumors and half-truths that lead to betrayal.

Comedy Central‘s new animated series Moonbeam City debuts Wednesday, September 16, at 10:30p following the 19th season premiere of South Park. The “retro-futuristic cop drama” offers an absurdist take on the gritty, sex-drenched crime dramas from the ‘80s. Voice talent includes Elizabeth Banks, Will Forte, Rob Lowe and Kate Mara.

Can you leave right now? This was the question that led to one pair of spontaneous travelers heading out on a 50-hour, $50,000 adventure in Abu Dhabi in Travel Channel’s 50/50, debuting Sunday, October 4, at 7p. Hosts Samantha Brown and Chris Grundy, with help from Today’s Al Roker, plucked the pair from the crowd at Rockefeller Plaza and they’re now headed to Abu Dhabi, where Roker will meet up with them as they choose among the extravagant options that await.

Nickelodeon greenlit 20 episodes of social media-influenced comedy Pinky Malinky, its newest original animated series. Co-created and co-exec produced by Chris Garbutt and Rikke Asbjoern (The Amazing World of Gumball) and exec produced by Scott Kreamer (Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness), the series follows an infectiously positive hotdog living in a human world.

Bounce TV will launch original series In The Cut on Tuesday, August 25, at 9p. The sitcom was created by Bentley Kyle Evans (Martin) and produced by Evans and Trenton Gumbs. The show, about the owner of several businesses in a strip mall in San Diego, stars Dorien Wilson and Ken Lawson.

RETURNING SERIES

History is renewing survival of the fittest series Alone for a second season. Nine weeks in, season one is averaging 2.5 million Total Viewers, 1.2 million A25-54 and 936,000 A18-49 in Live+3 delivery, according to Nielsen, making it the No. 3 new nonfiction series on cable this year. Season finale premieres Thursday, August 20, at 10p. At stake: $500,000 for the person who survives the longest in complete isolation in the harsh wilderness. Production on season two is slated to begin this fall in Vancouver Island.

ABC Family still has room on its plate. The network picked up a third season of comedy Young & Hungry, starring Emily Osment and Jonathan Sadowski. Its spring 2015 finale set a series high in A18-49 (973,000) and delivered its No. 2 telecast of all time in A18-34 (685,000).

New episodes of Tosh.0 are on the way from Comedy Central beginning Tuesday, August 25, at 10p. Host Daniel Tosh will enlist the “Tosh.0 Memorabilia Dump” in an effort to recoup the more than 24 grand he lost in 2012 on a single blackjack hand.

Syndicated lottery game show Monopoly Millionaires’ Club will debut its second season on September 12. Produced by Scientific Games Productions, the show will move to a half-hour format when it returns with hosts Billy Gardell (Mike & Molly) and Todd Newton (Family Game Night) to Las Vegas. It’s available on Tribune, Sinclair, Hearst, CBS, Gannett, Media General, Graham Holdings, and other station groups.

CASTING NEWS

Zendaya joins the judges panel for the 2016 Miss America Competition, airing live on ABC on Sunday, September 13, at 9p. The singer/actress joins previously announced celebrity judges country crooner Brett Eldredge; Tara Kyle, author and wife of the late U.S. Navy SEAL "American Sniper" Chris Kyle; Kevin O’Leary of Shark Tank, and 2014 Paralympic snowboarding bronze medalist Amy Purdy.

Incorporated, the Syfy drama pilot from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Pearl Street Films, has added several cast members. Dennis Haysbert (24), David Hewlett and Ian Tracey (Bates Motel) have joined the futuristic espionage thriller, Affleck and Damon’s first scripted cable project.

Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries) will return as a regular cast member for the second season of HBO’s Ballers. Kebbel was a frequent recurring player in the football sendup’s first season.

It was reported by Variety, though not confirmed by the network, that Bravo cast transgender model Amiyah Scott for the eighth season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. Scott would be the first transgender woman to be featured in the Real Housewives franchise.

TV Land turned to Broadway to fill out the cast of its pilot I Shudder. Megan Hilty (Wicked), John Behlmann (Significant Other), Tony-nominated Geneva Carr (Hand To God) and Brooklyn Shuck (Matilda The Musical) are all onboard for the comedy about an advocate of manners, style and common decency that stars Hamish Linklater.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

TV ad spending dropped 2 percent in July compared to the same period last year, according to advertising data company Standard Media Index. Investment in cable rose only slightly by 1 percent, while broadcast fell by 2 percent during the same month, SMI reports. “While TV’s numbers were down slightly, our July results are showing some stabilization at the top end of the TV market,” said James Fennessy, SMI’s chief commercial officer. “The broadcast networks showed a slight uptick, if you discount Univision’s 2014 World Cup revenue. Fox’s performance improved significantly with the FIFA Women’s World Cup, attracting some very significant scatter dollars.” In other July report highlights:
*  While digital media continues to siphon dollars away from the TV upfront market (down 5 percent), the scatter market was able to attract double-digit growth and rise by 17 percent in July after a slower growth rate in June.
*  Scatter broadcast revenues increased by 54 percent and a more modest 1 percent for cable.
*  In the Upfront market, broadcast revenues dropped 13 percent and cable stayed relatively flat.
MTV and Discovery Channel attracted double-digit percentage increases in July, and TBS revenues rose again in July after some weak months earlier in 2015.
Telemundo had double-digit YoY growth. Other top broadcast networks ABC, CBS and Fox all stayed relatively flat for month.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Keshet International signed a co-development deal with Canadian independent production, distribution and financing company Facet4 Media. The two companies are eyeing drama and comedy projects for the Canadian and international marketplace. Facet4 was founded by Stephen Greenberg in 2014 along with head of creative Anna-Sue Greenberg and Jamie Greenberg as head of business development.
