MORE KIDS NEWS

Radio Disney is putting its eggs in the digital distribution basket. The Disney owned network in September will reduce its radio station outlets to just one, KDIS-AM in LA, with staff reductions at local stations and in ad sales and operations expected. Disney has had a distribution arrangement with SiriusXM for 12 years; it now has new agreements with ShowMobile, Slacker and Harman International‘s Aha Radio, and a deal for top 30 syndication.

Earlybird registration rates for the Cynopsis Kids Business Summit, Sept. 8 in NY, end this Friday. Yes, that’s this Friday. If you’re involved in any aspect of children’s and teen media – programming, digital, distribution, advertising, app development -you don’t want to miss this event featuring keynotes from environmental advocate and media personality Philippe Cousteau and DreamWorks Animation Television head Margie Cohn. We’ll also be playing our own CynKids version of Apples to Apples throughout the day. Don’t miss out: http://www.cynopsiskidssummit.com

PRODUCTION NOTES

Nickelodeon’s first crack at taking pitches at San Diego Comic-Con last month has yielded a green light for animated shorts series Cupcakery of Doom, created by Trevor Reece of Eureka, Calif., a writer for The Press Democrat newspaper’s comics blog. Nick took more than 100 pitches during the event, ultimately deciding on this comedic story about a bear and a mouse with designs on taking over the world. Cupcakery will be developed as part of Nickelodeon’s global Animated Shorts Program, and will have the potential to air on the network, appear on the newly relaunched website and Nick App. “It was a grueling and gratifying three-day open call,” said Jenna Boyd, Nick SVP, animation development. “Besides Trevor, there are some people we met whom we will have continuing relationships with, possibly to join our production teams or talk further about their concepts and ideas.”

With no sign of defrosting in sight, ABC will air one-hour special The Story of Frozen: Making a Disney Animated Classic, 8-9p on Sept. 2. The collaboration with Lincoln Square Productions and Walt Disney Animation Studios promises peeks behind the scenes, including interviews with the stars Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, directors, songwriters, producer and artists and chief creative officer John Lasseter. The special will also tease a preview of Frozen characters Anna, Elsa and Kristoff on an upcoming ep of ABC’s Once Upon a Time, plus a preview of Disney Animation’s upcoming film Big Hero 6.

ABC Family has given the thumbs up to a fourth season of Switched at Birth. The third season finale of the Peabody Award-winning series aired Monday, Aug. 18.
