Cancelling TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting cost Discovery Communications a cool $19 million. During an earnings call on Wednesday, CFO Andy Warren cited higher restructuring and other charges of $19 million, “primarily due to content impairment charges from canceling TLC’s19 Kids and Counting.” 19 Kids was yanked in May after it was revealed family member Josh Duggar had molested underage girls as a teen.

IN THE NEWS

The View’s Nicolle Wallace turned down an offer to trade her co-host seat for a guest contributor role, and will leave the ABC talker at the end of the season. The political analyst joins Rosie Perez at the exit door. “She will always be a friend of our show,” said exec producer Bill Wolff in a note shared with show staff yesterday. Comedian Michelle Collins joins Whoopi Goldberg and Raven-Symone on the season 19 panel come fall.

Cord cutters may be casting a shadow on the cable business, but during Time Warner’s earning call, Turner CEO John Martin said skinny bundles could work in the company’s favor. “We at Turner have the type of networks that will be overly represented in those bundles,” said the exec. Then there’s the company’s new HBO Now streaming service. “We are extremely pleased with how it’s being received,” said CEO Jeff Bewkes. HBO’s revenues had a 1 percent uptick to $1.4 billion due to more subscribers, while operating income fell 8 percent thanks to costs formarketing and technology related to HBO Now.

Dish Network reported a 3.7 percent lift in 2Q earnings, to $3.83 billion, but lost 81,000 subscribers – despite folding new Sling TV subscribers into its total pay-TV number. Dish counted 13.9 million subs, down from 14.05 million during the same period last year. Up side: Revenue per user in 2Q rose to $87.91, from $84.14 last year.

Did McDreamy have to die? Yes, said Shonda Rhimes of the shocking demise of Derek Shepherd, played by the exiting Patrick Dempsey, last season. “As painful as it was for me as a storyteller, it preserved what felt true to me,” Rhimes told reporters at TCA. “It felt like that was the only way to make Meredith and Derek’s magic remain true and forever frozen in time.” Rhimes also said Dempsey’s departure after 11 years, one year before his contract was up, was mutual.

Discovery Life Channel announced the launch of The Lifesaver Project, part of its ongoing Making Life Better public awareness campaign. The net will recognize one “lifesaver,” who makes life better for their community, each month; winners receive a $1000 Visa gift card and a $1000 donation for the charity of their choice.

Donald Trump said on Good Morning America he’d like the Republican candidate debate tonight to be “very civil.” What are the chances of that happening? Let us know what you think in the new Cynopsis poll.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

IFC ordered pilot presentations for three comedies: comedic panel show Great Minds, hosted by Dan Harmon (Community); a late night talk show hosted by comedian Jim Norton (Inside Amy Schumer), and satirical newsmag 1320 Seconds, created and helmed by Sara Schaefer (Late Night With Jimmy Fallon). “These pilots represent an exciting, aggressive move for us into the alternative comedy format space as we continue to expand our programming reach,” said Jennifer Caserta, IFC president.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and national public media producer WGBH announced a co-production agreement for the creation of a television and cross-platform series based on the Gossie & Friends book series. HMH and WGBH will pursue a domestic broadcasting arrangement for the series, as well as international co-production financing.

Does magic exist? Absolutely, says Michael Carbonaro, back for season two of truTV’s The Carbonaro Effect. The magician tells his tale in the latest Cynsiders.

COMING UP

A 50-episode marathon of I Dream of Jeannie will be hosted by none other than the lady in the bottle herself, Barbara Eden, on Saturday, September 19 at 8p on Antenna TV. Stunt marks the 50th anniversary of the sitcom. What was Eden’s most memorable episode? “The pilot episode proved to be challenging, thanks to the weather,” the actress tells Cynopsis. “It was an unbelievably cold day on the beach where Jeannie and Captain Nelson first meet. I was in my pink chiffon costume in freezing temps! It was all I could do to contain my shivers on camera. Despite all of that, it’s still my favorite Jeannie episode.”

VOCES and American Masters team for a co-presentation of American Masters – Pedro E. Guerrero: A Photographer’s Journey, premiering Friday, September 18 at 9p on PBS (check local listings). Episode about the celebrated Mexican American photographer airs during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Lesson of the day from TLC: Even cringe-worthy dates can lead to true love. One-hour special 3 Bad Dates, 1 Soulmate airs on the net tonight at 10p.

BET’s Katrina 10 Years Later: Through Hell in High Water follows survivors of the hurricane who fought to rebuild their lives and communities. Hosted by BET News correspondent Jeff Johnson and featuring actor Wendell Pierce (The Wire), special airs Wednesday, August 26 at 8p.

Animal Planet gets its gator on on Monday, August 17. After an all-day marathon of Gator Boys eps kicking off at 6a, the net premieres new installments from 7p-11p.

CASTING NEWS

David Alan Grier (Dreamgirls) landed the role of the Cowardly Lion and 18-year-old newcomer Shanice Williams will play Dorothy in NBC’s The Wiz Live!, airing Thursday, December 3. Queen Latifah stars as the Wizard of Oz.

AnnaLynne McCord (90210) will recur on season two of ABC’s Secrets & Lies. Production begins next week in LA.

Andrew Ridings (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) will play the son of Craig T. Nelson’s character in NBC’s Coach sequel, written by original series creator Barry Kemp.

Keiynan Lonsdale (Insurgent) joins season two of CW’s The Flash as a series regular. Superhero drama returns Tuesday, October 6 at 8p.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

NBCUnversal expects to sell advertising well north of $1 billion for the 2016 Summer Olympics. “Our expectations are that we’ll exceed London,” Seth Winter, EVP of ad sales for NBC Sports, told reporters. Haul for London’s Games: $1.3 billion. The event is being held in time zone-friendly Rio de Janeiro, just one hour ahead of EST.

ABC, the last broadcast net to wrap upfront deals, finished with CPM increases between 5 and 6 percent, according to Adweek. During an earnings call Tuesday, COO Thomas Staggs told investors, “We’re optimistic about ABC’s fall line-up, to which advertisers have responded by agreeing to give ABC industry-leading gains in our just-completed upfront.” Scatter pricing “is pacing moderately above upfront,” said CFO Christine McCarthy.

KIDS CORNER

Animated short-form series Descendants Wicked World, which picks up after the final scene of Disney Channel movie Descendants, premieres Friday, September 18 on Disney Channel and its digital platforms. Built-in fan base includes the movie’s over 10.5 million total viewers (Live+3).

GOING GLOBAL

Alex Gibney’s Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is headed to Europe’s Sky Atlantic channel on September 21, airing across the UK. Plans for an April premiere for the film, which aired on HBO in March, were postponed due to apprehension about possible libel claims in Northern Ireland.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Discovery struck a deal that will give Verizon mobile subscribers access to clips of current series and full episodes of past seasons. The arrangement “adds another source to our distribution revenue stream,” said Discovery CEO David Zaslav during the company’s 2Q earnings call.

Ride TV is saddling up for Dish Network. The net, launched in fall 2014 covering the equestrian lifestyle community, joins Dish’s America’s Top 250 and Heartland programming packages later this year. Craig Morris, president of Ride, is grateful for the agreement, noting, “There would be no cowboy if not for the horse.”
