08/05/15: The NHL adds MLBAM to its top-line; FOX Sports punches up the weekdays; Networks line up PGA Championship plans

Good morning. It’s Wednesday August 5, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

The National Hockey League and Major League Baseball Advanced Media are now teammates, announcing a “groundbreaking” digital media rights partnership between the two organizations. The six-year deal will look to launch a fully integrated global hub of digital content that includes video, live game streaming, social media, fantasy, apps, along with statistical and analytical content. In addition it hands MLBAM the rights to distribute live out-of-market games, including through the NHL GameCenter LIVE and NHL Center Ice subscription services. Through the agreement, MLBAM will now take over NHL.com, including the League’s seven native language sites, Club websites and operate NHL apps. On the TV front, MLB Network will now offer studio space and production resources for the NHL Network for distribution in the United States and certain international markets. MLBAM expects to fully launch its NHL presence in January 2016.

“As the market leader, MLBAM is uniquely qualified to assist us in giving hockey fans a richer, more immersive experience with the game,” said NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. “MLBAM is also the right partner because they have the expertise to help us deliver new and exciting products to our fans, who crave compelling digital content. We couldn’t have North America better covered than with the power of NBC, Rogers, TVA and MLBAM  an incredible convergence of technical, creative and production talent that is great news for our fans.”

“It is an honor for Major League Baseball to stand alongside the National Hockey League on this joint initiative,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. “All of us in sports share a desire to distribute our games and tell our stories as widely and broadly as possible. Because of our own experiences in delivering baseball to its loyal fans, MLB Advanced Media is uniquely suited to excel in a partnership of this magnitude.”

ON THE AIR

Two big announcements in the boxing world yesterday. FOX Sports formally unveiled its new multi-year deal to showcase Premier Boxing Champions. Through the deal, PBC will now serve as the exclusive boxing program for FOX Sports 1. Programming will be anchored by Toe-to-Toe Tuesdays, a new series that debuts on Sept. 8 at 9p on the channel and will offer a slate of 21 shows through the end of June, 2016. The fights are simulcast on FOX Deportes, under a series name to be determined soon. Brian Kenny hosts the show while FOX Deportes, will see Daniel Ponce de Leon join Samuel Jacobo to call the action. 
 
Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather announced what may be his last opponent in the ring, and will face Andre Berto on Sept. 12 at 8p from Las Vegas on Showtime PPV. The telecast will also include Roman “Rocky” Martinez/Orlando “Siri” Salido and Badou Jack “The Ripper”/“Saint” George Groves. SHOWTIME Sports will support the event with All Access.

It’s almost time for the PGA Championship, with Turner Sports and CBS Sports unveiling coverage plans for the tournament, which begins on Aug. 13. TNT takes on the event with 18 hours of exclusive live action that will see Jordan Spieth look to become the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win three major championships in one year. Programming includes six hours each day on Aug. 13-14, from 2-8p, as well as the third and fourth rounds on Aug. 15-16, from 11a-2p. Talent is set to includes Ernie Johnson, analyst Ian Baker-Finch, course reporter Billy Kratzert, and Vince Cellini handling pre- and post-round interviews. The telecast will include the use of drone camera footage into the event for the first time as well as TNT Total Motion swing analysis and Golf Trax technology utilizing laser-generated data.

Around the dial, CBS Sports offers live 18-hole coverage of the 2015 PGA Championship on Aug. 15 and 16 from 2-7p. CBS Sports will also broadcast highlights of early-round action with Bill Macatee and David Feherty on Aug. 13 and Aug. 14 at 12:35p. CBS Sports Network offers week-long coverage via PGA Championship Clubhouse Report as well as PGA Championship on the Range.

On the radio front, SiriusXM delivers the 2015 PGA Championship with four days of play. Lead host Earl Forcey anchors the play-by-play broadcast with Charlie Rymer on board as analyst. Coverage will air Thursday and Friday from noon-8p and Saturday and Sunday from noon through the conclusion of play.

NBC Sports is adding Rodney Harrison to the mix with co-hosts Mike Florio and Paul Burmeister on weekdays throughout the 2015 season as part of NBCSN’s Pro Football Talk. The show returns with a new format starting Aug. 10 at 6:30p before regularly airing each weekday at 6p. Meanwhile, NBCSN’s two additional NFL programs, Fantasy Football Live and NFL Turning Point will debut on August 11, at 6:30p, and September 16, at 10p respectively.

Chalk up FOX Sports 1 as another winner from Ronda Rousey’s win at UFC 190, as the channel saw preliminary bouts average 1,322,000 viewers to make it the third most-watched PPV prelim card in channel history, according to Nielsen. That is up 13% on household rating (1.04 vs. 0.92) and 10% on average audience (1,322,000 vs. 1,205,000) over the prelims for Rousey’s last main event PPV card in February.

Meanwhile, the second edition of ESPN’s Premier Boxing Champions coverage handed the channel with its largest boxing audience on ESPN since 1998. The card saw an average audience of 1,073,000 viewers for markups of 34% and 55% among P25-54 from the July 11 PBC on ESPN event. The telecast also peaked during the main event with nearly 1.5 million viewers according to Nielsen.

ONE World Sports locked in an expansion of its previously released agreement with the National Cable Television Cooperative to now include TV Everywhere rights for the network. The new deal will allow NCTC’s nearly 850 active member companies to carry and offer their subscribers the authenticated feed.

NUVOtv announced plans to broadcast the season two finale of Knockout from the Grand Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino on August 16 at 7p.  The main card event will Roy Jones Jr. against WBC USNBC Light-Heavyweight titlist William Bailey.

Speaking of famous faces, Ronda Rousey will reportedly become the new face of a new series of spots for Carl’s Jr.. The fast-food chain confirmed to Eater.com that the UFC champion will see her first spot debut later this month. 

The Legacy Agency reports that the International Champions Cup saw not only record crowds, but report sponsorships as well. TLA Worldwide plc, parent company of The Legacy Agency partnered with Nine Live and Relevent Sportsto produce, market and deliver the Australian event to a worldwide audience. Key sponsors on board included: Audi, VMEC, Telstra, HostPlus, Crown Resorts, Crownbet, CUB, Samsung, Nike, TAG and Indeed.com.

ESPN and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) will expand their relationship by creating an internship at ESPN that will begin next year. The summer internship will be offered in memory of Stuart Scott, the longtime ESPN anchor who died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. The internship includes pay and housing, with candidates submitted to ESPN from the NABJ Sports Task Force.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

PGA.com, managed by Turner Sports, lines up coverage of PGA Championship with PGA Championship LIVE, presented by Mercedes-Benz, as well as social content and new interactive features that include shot-by-shot laser-generated data for the marquee group and an alternative live leaderboard displaying players on the course by group. The platform will feature multiple live video streams allowing fans to view Marquee Groups and Par-3 coverage, along with providing direct access to the television broadcast and media room interviews. Fans will also be able to view simulcast broadcast coverage of the tournament via PGA.com. Marquee group coverage will be hosted by play-by-play announcer Brian Katrek and analyst Michael Breed, alongside course reporters Ted Tryba and Fred Albers.

espnW.com continues to gain steam, notching a record high of 31.6 million minutes spent on the site, according to comScore. That marks four straight months that the site has seen all-time highs in several metrics. The FIFA Women’s World Cup helped push the site to its second-largest monthly unique visitor total ever with 7.7 million.

MP & Silva announced that Andrea Radrizzani has sold part of his shares to company president Riccardo Silva. Both entrepreneurs co-founded the leading sports media company in 2004. With the transaction, Riccardo Silva is now majority shareholder of the MP & Silva Group, while Andrea Radrizzani will remain a shareholder through his holding of investments, without being involved in management and operations.
