TODAY’S TOP NEWS

 
Facebook reported $4.04 billion in revenue during its Q2 revenue call yesterday, beating Wall Street expectations of $3.99 billion. The social network counted 968 million daily active users, a 17 percent year-over-year increase but slightly off from the 970.5 million estimated. Mobile DAUs were 844 million, with 76 percent of advertising revenue from mobile, up from 62 percent from last year. On the call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said people spend an average 46 minutes per day across Facebook, Messenger and Instagram.
 
Next for comedian and star of a new Netflix doc and HBO special, Tig Notaro: an Amazon pilot order. Notaro penned the unscripted comedy with Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody. The two will exec produce with Louis C.K., Blair Breard (Louie) and 3 ArtsDave Becky. The show started life as a script deal at FX.
 

 
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Earlier this week, Nokia announced its first foray into virtual reality with the Nokia OZO camera, and yesterday, creative community Tongal became its first partner, driving Nokia’s Look Around You VR film competition. “Nokia’s OZO camera ­ and virtual reality in general – opens up a new wealth of opportunities for storytellers and filmmakers,” James DeJulio, Co-Founder and President of Tongal, told Cynopsis. “The ‘Look Around You’ campaign really seeks to spotlight innovative ideas in the largely creatively untouched VR filmmaking space.” Two filmmakers with winning pitches will produce their short using the camera along with technical and post production support from Nokia. Grand prize: an OZO.
 
Former CEO of Glenn Beck’s digital network TheBlaze, Chris Balfe; Joel Cheatwood, former chief content officer of TheBlaze; Carolyn Polke, ex-COO of TheBlaze and Kevin Balfe, once SVP of publishing at Beck’s Mercury Radio Arts, unveiled a new media company called Red Seat Ventures. The company, whose launch partners include Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions and radio network Premiere Networks, will work to connect content creators with their consumers.
 
Social media provider Frankly Inc bought digital TV tech company, Worldnow, for $45 million in cash and stock. Current stakeholder Raycom will have a 20 percent interest in the company after the deal is finalized; Vice President of Digital Media, Strategy and Business Development Joe Fiveash will have a seat on the Frankly board.

OTT + SVOD

 
International movie and TV streaming service DramaFever and CJ E+M entered a multi-year licensing agreement to bring Korean TV series and feature films to DF’s network. The eight exclusive K-dramas, ten exclusive new feature films, and more than 350 hours of other drama and variety programs will be marketed by DF beginning with KCON 2015 USA from July 31-Aug. 2.
 
The PGA Tour is the latest to enter the OTT market, with a new service kicking off at the Quicken Loans National beginning today. For $4.99/month, golf fans can watch early opening rounds and tournaments throughout the season on desktops, tablets and smartphones.

CONTENT MEDIA
 

Facebook’s Oculus Rift virtual reality head set will come with a ten-minute animated experience when it hits the consumer market in 2016. Titled Henry, former Pixar animator Ramiro Lopes Dau directed the second VR experience from Oculus Story Studio. “Can you make a character emote in VR? How does it feel? Those questions were at the core of Henry,” said Dau.

Mobile ad platform MobileFuse rolled out a new video-targeting product Mindset Video yesterday. The tech pulls a consumer’s location data and environmental data, including the time of day, weather conditions, local event information and census information, to deliver video ads to the most receptive audience.

 
 
VC FUNDING + INVESTORS
 

B2B predictive marketing software Radius closed a Series D funding round of $50 million. Led by Founders Fund and including Salesforce Ventures, Formation 8 and Yuan Capital, the company will use the funds for its data science engine and cloud business in the U.S. Radius has raised more than $125 million to date.

 

EXECUTIVE MOVES
 

Mobile acquisition provider YouAppi opened new offices in London and Berlin. Javier Plana is joining the London office as Director of Business Development and Yael Khan arrives at the Berlin office as Head of Business Development. Plana was previously with M+C Saatchi Mobile, where he was Associate Director; Khan comes to YouAppi from TestObject.
 
Technicolor expanded the company’s Animation and Games division with the appointment of Sean Mullen as Creative Director and David Kern as Games Technical Director. In addition, the studio’s previous Creative Director Owen Hurley was promoted to Executive Director of Creative. Mullen joins Technicolor from Disney Interactive. David Kern was previously at Nobodinos LLC, a company he founded in 2012.
 
Interactive video platform Adventr named Nathaniel Wilson as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Wilson has had experience in the digital sales space for more than a decade at companies including Aol On Network, Demand Media and Fox Digital.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
 

At last week’s VidCon conference, the YouTube community set out to break a record by doing “the wave” with cell phones.
