07/28/15: NBC slots NHL record; FOX Sports wants long-term engagement; DraftKings gets a heavyweight boost

Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 28, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

NBC Sports Group is serving up its most NHL regular season games ever with the upcoming season, announcing plans to carry 105 contests starting this fall. Coverage will include 12 games on NBC and 93 games on NBCSN and debut with Opening Night doubleheaders on Oct. 7 between the Blackhawks/Rangers at 8p, followed by Sharks/Kings on NBCSN. Season highlights include NBC’s coverage of the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series pitting the Blackhawks/Wild on Feb. 21 and the Red Wings/Avalanche on Feb. 27. NBC also offers the Discover NHL Thanksgiving Showdown on Black Friday starting at 1p with Bruins/Rangers followed by Blackhawks/Ducks on NBCSN at 5p. Overall, NBCSN showcases 24 Wednesday Night Rivalry telecasts, plus six Wednesday Nightcaps that will showcase Western Conference teams, including the Kings, Sharks and Avalanche, as well as 12 Sunday Night Hockey contests.

ON THE AIR

The USOC is officially breaking up with Boston as the US entry for a host site at the 2024 Olympics, following the news that the city’s mayor wouldn’t sign off on the bid at the present time. USOC CEO Scott Blackmun explained: “When Boston was selected in January of this year, we were excited about the possibility of partnering with Boston’s great universities in a bid that would take advantage of existing college facilities and spur the development of much-needed sport, transportation and residential infrastructure for the City of Boston. The cornerstone idea behind Boston’s bid was sound.” He later added that “the USOC does not think that the level of support enjoyed by Boston’s bid would allow it to prevail over great bids from Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Budapest or Toronto.” Early speculation has LA as a likely replacement.

NBCSN’s carriage of NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Sunday handed the channel with its most-watched telecast ever, averaging 4.7 million viewers for the race as Kyle Busch scored his third consecutive Sprint Cup victory. The race’s 3.0 Nielsen household rating also marks its highest-rated telecast ever.

CBS Sports continued its uptick trend in golf this year, as the final round of the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday delivered the channel with a 2.1 rating/5 share, according to Nielsen. That is up 17% year-over-year and marked the highest rated final round ever for this event in the metered markets since its debut in 2007. So far this year, through the final weekend in July, CBS’ coverage of the PGA TOUR and the Masters are averaging a 2.5/6 through 16 events for a 32% rise over 2014’s numbers.

Golden Boy Promotions found a new home following its run on FOX Sports 1. The company locked in a three-year deal with Estrella TV to carry a pair of boxing cards every month on the channel, including LA Fight Club. Estrella TV will air its first fight under the deal with Golden Boy Promotions on Sept. 4. “Estrella TV is one of the top-rated networks across the U.S. among Hispanic audiences so it was an easy decision to partner with them in bringing live, exciting boxing matches to their viewers across America,” said Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “Latinos comprise the largest fan base for our sport so we see this partnership with Estrella TV as a great opportunity to showcase our stable of fighters before an audience that is hungry to watch action-packed match-ups.”

Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger told CNBC that ESPN could be sold directly to consumers in the future, although not in the next five years. "If we end up seeing more erosion in the so-called multichannel [cable and satellite TV] bundle, quality will win out," he told the channel’s Squawk Box, adding "While the business model may face challenges over the next few years, long term for ESPN … they’ll be fine. They have pricing leverage, too," Iger said. "Disney [Channel] is another … brand and product that could be sold directly to the customer."

ESPN made its game selections for the Aug. 9, Aug. 23 and Aug. 30 editions of Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell. Aug. 9 will showcase the Dodgers/Pirates, while Aug. 23 spotlights the Pirates/Giants and Aug. 30 features the Cubs/Dodgers.

Fox Sports is launching Fox Sports Engage, a multiplatform branded-content distribution initiative designed to offer sponsors a broader reach by distributing branded content across a slate of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. FOX is then guaranteeing views depending on the combo of platforms used in a particular campaign. Early adopters include the likes of Fiat and Nationwide. "That guaranteed viewership is what we think has been missing from the social media distribution landscape," Pete Vlastelica, EVP of Digital for Fox Sports, told Adweek. "We think we’ve developed what could be a real game changer for our ad sales team in response to a lot of input and feedback we’ve heard from the marketplace."

Major League Soccer heading back to school via a multiyear deal with Southern New Hampshire University that will see the league offer full scholarships for players and internship opportunities for the school’s students. The school will now offer 125 scholarships a year through 2018 for developmental, current and former players, as well as league staff.

The Rugby Football Union is buying in to USA Rugby’s new commercial arm, Rugby International Marketing, serving as a minority partner in the endeavor. Rugby International Marketing serves as the new commercial arm of USA Rugby, representing its commercial rights and exploring new revenue streams to support the development of rugby in the USA. “We are delighted to have made this mutually beneficial agreement with the RFU,” said USA Rugby CEO Nigel Melville. “Their expertise and guidance will help to ensure that we further commercially develop rugby in the USA. RIM will help us generate new revenue streams that will support the continued development of the game in the USA.”

DIGITAL & STREAMING

WWE is expanding SummerSlam from three to four hours on WWE Network where it will now begin at 7p on August 23. SummerSlam now joins WrestleMania as the only two events with four hours of live non-stop action. WWE Network will also air a one-hour live SummerSlam Kick-Off Show starting at 6p.

FANTASY/GAMING/ESPORTS

DraftKings reeled in some heavyweights to secure a $300 Million Series D round of funding led by FOX Sports, along with MLB, NHL and MLS. Also in the mix are The Madison Square Garden Company and Legends and investors Atlas Venture, DST Global, GGV Capital, The Kraft Group, The Raine Group and Wellington Management Company LLP. DraftKings will now utilize the additional funding to “continue building out its industry-leading web and mobile products, launch its product internationally, and explore new opportunities for vertical expansion.” “Partnering with DraftKings, a clear leader in this field, is a great opportunity for us to capitalize on the growth of daily fantasy sports for the benefit of our viewers,” said Eric Shanks, President and COO, FOX Sports. “We’ll work with DraftKings to develop ideas and create content to drive deeper engagement with sports fans across multiple platforms, including our national, local, and digital properties.”

Meanwhile, NFL.com laid out its fantasy plans for the upcoming season, led by its new “Friends Don’t Small Talk, Friends Talk Fantasy” campaign featuring the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Victor Cruz, Antonio Brown, Eddie Lacy and Randall Cobb. NFL.com Fantasy Football will offer a “high-quality game day experience, complete with video highlights, free live scoring and push notifications” this season. Additional features include live drafts, full roster management and a social feed to chat. In addition, the platform will offer players roster options and the ability to activate backups on their roster in the event they outperform the team’s starter(s). Meanwhile, NFL Fantasy LIVE on NFL Network, NFL.com, NFL Now & NFL RedZone debuts Sept. 7 and will feature experts and analysts including Michael Fabiano, Adam Rank, Akbar Gbajabiamila, Marcas Grant, Elliot Harrison, Matt “Money” Smith and James Koh.
