Collective Digital Studio
(CDS) signed rock band Boyce Avenue, a group with seven million subscribers and over two billion views on YouTube. “We joined YouTube only two years after its launch, before being a YouTube star was a thing,” said the band in a statement. “We knew this was a platform from which we could share our music internationally with our fans in a very direct and personal way.” European media company ProSiebenSat.1 recently announced it’s creating a new multi-channel network through a merger of CDS and Studio71.
 
User-generated video company Jukin Media partnered with FremantleMedia North America’s Tiny Riot! to joint manage The Pet Collective. Tiny Riot! will work with Jukin to bring its library of pet viral videos to the site. The Pet Collective has more than 165 million lifetime views, and one million fans across social platforms.

 
 
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
Professional Ultimate Disc League champion and YouTube celebrity Brodie Smith signed for representation with Abrams Artists Agency’s Alternative Programming and Digital department. Smith has amassed over 1.1 million YT subscribers, accumulating more than 135 million views. Abrams will represent Smith for digital opportunities and merchandising, and will work alongside Whistle Sports, Smith’s network on brand-integration, sponsorship and social-influencer deals.
 
FameBit, a self-service platform that connects YouTube influencers to brands, is breaking into the original content business. The first series from the platform, FilterFreeTV (FFTV), will debut at VidCon and star Tiffany Ma, RJ Aguilar, Raya, and Kaylaydoll, who collectively reach 1.2 million on YouTube. FB Clients include L’Oreal, Adidas and the Dollar Shave Club.
 
At a point when Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries are expanding their lineups of original shows, Crown Media Family Networks has launched the sister nets on AT+T’s U-verse. The channels will also be on the U-verse App for tablets and smartphones, and on Uverse.com. 
 
 

CONTENT MEDIA
 

Yahoo beat Wall Street expectations in their Q2 earnings call this week, hitting $1.04 billion in revenue, higher than the $1.03 billion projected. Yahoo’s big rev maker came from its Mavens business – the mobile, video, native and Tumblr ads – which clocked in at $399 million for Q2.
 
The Associated Press unleashed more than 550,000 video clips on YouTube, from archives dating back to 1985. Along with British Movietone, over one million minutes of digitized film footage will be uploaded onto YT. The point? Offering documentary filmmakers and historians access to searchable news footage, and promoting licensing deals for rights.

Crackle original Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser scored over one million total views within five days of its release. That would have equated to $8.12 million in revenue for the David Spade-starring at an average ticket price of $8.12, but the film is available to watch for free on Crackle’s site and apps.
 
The NFL expanded its digital portfolio with new VOD offering NFL Game Pass. The service replaced NFL Game Rewind, which gave subscribers on-demand replays of previously aired games. Game Pass will be the first app on Apple TV to stream full NFL game replays.
 
Filmmakers PJ Liguori’s Oscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures and Sawyer Hartman’s The Parallax Theory are currently available for preorder online. The two six-episode series will debut on Vimeo On Demand on September 15 and 22.
 

 
MOBILE GAMING + APPS
 

After fans tuned in to the premiere of VH1’s Dating Naked: Playing for Keeps last night, they were able to date naked (in private, phew) through the show’s new companion mobile game. Players can try Dating Naked’s Love’s a Beach 8-bit throwback game at lovesabeach.vh1.com.
 

 
ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS
 

Bud Light became the first U.S. advertiser to launch a 360-degree view video ad campaign with the new Google TrueView ads. Through a trial run on the ad platform, Coca-Cola and Nike had a much higher view-through rate on the platform than on standard vids, according to Google.
 
 

RESEARCH

 
More than 167 million consumers use apps and the web on their smartphones, with users checking their phones about 150 times a day, according to new insights from the Nielsen’s Consumer 360 conference. Highlights from the conference’s Making Mobile Work for Brands session include:
–      86 percent of Asian/Pacific Islanders and 83 percent of African-Americans have adopted smartphones, which is the highest rate in the multicultural groups measured. Hispanics followed at 82 percent, Native Americans at 81 percent and non-Hispanic whites at 75 percent.
–      According to a Nielsen study with Facebook, using FB in addition to TV advertising led to an increase in incremental reach of ten million viewers, a 20 percent lift.
–      Music is native in the mobile-first platforms, and radio delivered the highest incremental gain in mobile-only unique visitors.
