Good morning. It’s Tuesday July 7, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

History was made on multiple fronts as the US Women’s National Team captured the Women’s World Cup on Sunday. The team’s 5-2 victory over Japan propelled broadcasters to all-time highs as the match became the most-watched soccer contest (men’s or women’s) in US history. FOX’s coverage pulled a hefty 25.4 million average viewers to the channel, according to Nielsen, with a 12.9 rating, and peaked with 30.9 million viewers in the 8:30-8:45p quarterhour. That is good enough to best the previous high-mark for a single network set a year ago pitting USA/Portugal, and easily surpasses the previous high mark for a women’s soccer game, set in 1999. Meanwhile, FOX Sports GO set its own record with 232,000 unique streamers, to score the largest authenticated streaming audience in FOX Sports GO history.

Around the dial, Telemundo’s Spanish-language coverage of the game added another 1.27 million viewers to the mix, up 97% over the final’s coverage in 2011 and ranking as the most watched game of a FIFA Women’s World Cup in U.S. Spanish-language TV, according to Nielsen. Together the FOX and Telemundo coverage nabbed 26.7 million viewers in the States.

ON THE AIR

In other soccer news, the NASL locked in a multi-year deal with ONE World Sports to serve as a national TV partner for the league. The channel will carry one game per week live with NASL Wednesday Night Soccer on ONE World Sports as well as highlight show NASL This Week on Tuesday nights at 6p. "Our new partnership with ONE World Sports is another significant step in our development as a top-tier sports enterprise," NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson said. "ONE World Sports’ incredible production quality and growing viewership footprint make it an ideal network for our new ‘Game of the Week’ concept and weekly highlight show. This addition complements our global streaming partnership with ESPN, as well as our existing local television broadcasts."

CONCACAF unveiled new initiatives designed to stop corruption, approving an expansive Reform Framework designed to solidify business operations via improved governance, increased public disclosure, and enhanced anti-corruption controls. In a statement, the organization said: “This Reform Framework reflects CONCACAF’s commitment to strengthening our governance, management, and operations. These reforms are intended to apply best practices for sound corporate governance to CONCACAF’s business operations. In implementing the Reform Framework, the Confederation will demonstrate to its fans, sponsors, member associations and other stakeholders that CONCACAF is resilient and devoted to managing, developing, and promoting the game with accountability and transparency.”

BeIN SPORTS saw over 1.5 million total viewers tune in for the Argentina/Chile telecast on both beIN SPORTS networks on July 4th, according to Nielsen. The match scored an average of one million viewers on beIN SPORTS en Espanol, while over 464,000 viewers tuned into via the beIN SPORTS English channel.

NBC UNIVERSO, Telemundo and NBC Deportes are now preparing to serve up coverage of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Portugal 2015 from July 9-19. All 32 matches will, for the first time, air on Spanish-language TV as NBC UNIVERSO runs 28 matches live and re-air seven, while Telemundo will broadcast live four matches that include the semi-finals, third place and final matches. Talent in the broadcast booth include Copan Alvarez and Karim Mendiburu, Guadalupe (Guad) Venegas and Ana Jurka.

Anthem Sports & Entertainment inked a deal that will see Fantasy Sports Network (FNTSY) and Fight Network join the lineup on Suddenlink Communications. Suddenlink is the seventh-largest U.S. cable company, serving customers in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and other markets.

NBC Sports Group lined up plans for the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open and the 144th Open Championship. Golf Channel will be on-hand to feature live coverage of the Scottish Open on Thursday and Friday, July 9-10 as well as early-round coverage on Saturday and Sunday, July 11-12 leading into the conclusion of third and final round play on NBC worth more than 25 combined hours in the cards. The following week, Golf Central’s Live From St. Andrews will originate from the Old Course at St. Andrews to offer news and analysis contributing to the network’s more than 30 total hours of news programming surrounding Open Championship week.

Universal Sports Network announced that the 2015 Department of Defense Warrior Games will be featured in an original production titled Strength & Honor: The 2015 Warrior Games. Part I of the two-part special runs Saturday, July 11 at 3p followed by Part II on July 18 at 4p. 

For the first time in network history, Comcast SportsNet, the regional television home of Major League Soccer’s Chicago Fire, will now offer an alternative Spanish-language telecast for three upcoming Fire games in July that will air exclusively on CSN+. The first telecast will feature the announcing tandem of Rodrigo Arana and Raquel Ortiz and will take place on Saturday, July 11 at 7:30p CT.

FOX Soccer set a new record for Facebook video views on Sunday, with more than 5.7 million views, driven by in-match highlights and post-match content from the Women’s World Cup final. FOX Sports GO set a new record with 232,000 unique streamers for USA-Japan. This was the largest authenticated streaming audience in FOX Sports GO history, besting the previous mark set by the USA-Germany semifinal (166,000 unique streamers).

Meanwhile, Twitter reports that there were 9 billion views of #FIFAWWC related Tweets on and off Twitter during the tournament from 6/6-7/5. The company reports that the top match, unsurprisingly, was the USA/Japan final, while the top place was Carli Lloyd.

FanDuel announced that Clifton Ma was joining the company as General Manager  New Products. Clifton was previously the Business Lead & Senior Director of Fantasy Sports at Yahoo, where he oversaw strategy, operations, monetization, and partnerships. Clifton will work out of the LA office and report directly to FanDuel CFO, Matt King, where he will be responsible for looking at new strategic initiatives that will complement FanDuel’s core product.
