AXS TV struck a licensing deal with Disney-ABC Television Group for off-network cable rights to the first three seasons of Nashville. The ABC drama “is the perfect complement to our growing lineup of music-inspired series,” said Mark Cuban, CEO of AXS TV. “We are confident that Nashville will connect with our viewers, while attracting a new audience of those who may have missed out on watching from the beginning of the series.”

IN THE NEWS

“It’s an extraordinary thing that John Hendricks’ simple idea in 1985 to satisfy curiosity – would grow from one channel in 156,000 U.S. homes to the world’s number-one Pay-TV programmer in more than 220 countries today,” David Zaslav, president and CEO, Discovery Communications, tells Cynopsis of the company’s 30th anniversary. “Discovery’s remarkable global growth and success is a testament to the dedication and ambition of our shareholders and partners and to our viewers’ enduring fascination about the world around them.”

To mark the occasion, Discovery Communications welcomed more than 200 guests to the Paley Center for Media in NYC last night, an event kicked off with a panel discussion led by Paula Zahn that included Sig Hansen of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch, the late Steve Irwin’s family, and Stacy London of TLC’s Love, Lust or Run. Discovery Channel President Rich Ross also took the stage, offering sneak peeks of the channel’s upcoming documentary Racing Extinction and, of course, Shark Week, before a Discovery-branded reception.

You gotta have friends: For the first time, HBO is offering free access to full episodes of programming on Facebook, for new comedies Ballers and The Brink. Ballers star/exec producer Dwayne Johson will host the first episode of his show on his Facebook page (49 million followers), while The Brink can be sampled on the series page. The episodes are also available on HBO NOW and HBO GO; shows air Sundays at 10p and 10:30p.

ABC Family is taking a different tack to increase sampling of Becoming Us. Sister nets Fusion and Lifetime will air key episodes of the docu-series, about a teen who learns his dad is becoming a woman. “As we all look to find new and innovative ways to reach our viewers and help them find great shows, I’m very grateful that my colleagues at Lifetime and Fusion are willing to showcase our incredible show on their networks,” said net president Tom Ascheim. Fusion will air catch-up stacks of episodes 1-3 on Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27 at 8p; Lifetime premieres episode 4 on Tuesday, June 30 at 10p prior to its airing on ABC Family, where it has the Mondays-at-9p slot.

The CW announced its fall lineup, which launches in October with only one new show. The Flash and iZombie arrive Tuesday, October 6; Wednesday, October 7 brings Arrow and Supernatural; The Vampire Diaries and The Originals bow Thursday, October 8; Reign and America’s Top Model debut Friday, October 9, and the series premiere of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is paired with the season premiere of Jane the Virgin on Monday, October 19 – giving the newcomer a little extra time to make an entrance.

Which networks are most in demand by cord cutters? History and Nat Geo top the list of the 2015 Beta Research Cable Network Interest Study, with 43 percent interest, followed by 42 percent for Discovery, 39 percent for Food Network and 38 percent for Animal Planet and A&E. “The top ranked basic networks among cord cutters tended to be channels with quality non-fiction programming,” Andrew Klein, president, cable TV division, tells Cynopsis. Online study was conducted in March/April 2015.

The NYTVF expanded its partnership with Red Arrow Entertainment Group to identify new comedy voices. Red Arrow is bringing in its Left/Right (Odd Mom Out) and Fabrik Entertainment (Burn Notice) production companies to develop selected projects and shepherd creators through the process. “The commitment from Red Arrow to develop two projects coming out of this year’s Festival represents a truly remarkable opportunity for independent creators to work with some of the best development and production executives in the business,” said NYTVF founder Terence Gray.

USA ordered a second season of drama series Mr. Robot, which had garnered industry buzz and nearly 2.6 million views in its pre-linear launch across digital platforms before its premiere last night at 10p. “We knew from the moment we read Sam Esmail’s provocative script, and witnessed the brilliant performances of Rami Malek and Christian Slater, that Mr. Robot is a stand-out series that is unlike anything currently on television,” said USA Network president Chris McCumber. “The overwhelmingly positive fan reactions to the pilot and the broad sampling of it, reaffirms our confidence in the series.”

For all the hype, most consumers aren’t paying much attention to the fall TV season, according to a new survey by Videology. Fifty-five percent of respondents said the season doesn’t impact video viewing, while 46 percent weren’t even aware the new TV season starts in September. “Brands have more opportunities than ever to continuously reach consumers fully engaged in top-notch programming,” said Scott Ferber, chairman/CEO of Videology. “The idea of a yearly TV season may soon be a distant memory.”

Do you think the fall TV season is still relevant? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

Fox News and Sarah Palin have parted ways, but the split was amicable, reports Politico. The one-time VP candidate’s contract was up this month and FNC decided not to renew.

Winners of the 2015 National Edward R. Murrow Awards, recognizing outstanding work by news organizations, include ABC News for Overall Excellence; CBS News for Breaking News, Newscast, Continuing Coverage, News Series, Use of Sound/Video, Writing and Website; NBC’s Today for Hard News and Sports Reporting; Al Jazeera America for News Documentary; CNN for Investigative Reporting and ESPN for Feature Reporting.

Got Your 6, saluting shows that accurately portray veterans and military families, announced its first round of “6 Certified” projects. Included are season 20 of Dancing With the Stars, which had Army veteran and double amputee Noah Galloway as a contestant, as well as episodes of Hawaii Five-0, Modern Family and The Night Shift.
