Good morning. It’s Tuesday June 23, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

With the numbers in for FOX Sports’ inaugural telecast of the US Open, the company wrapped up coverage on Sunday with a 4.2/10 and 6.7 million viewers for over eight and a half hours of coverage on FOX. With the championship coming down to a late putt, the primetime portion of coverage averaged a 5.3/10 and 8.7 million viewers from 7-10:46p, according to Nielsen. The telecast also handed the channel with its most-watched Sunday night in prime since 1/4/15. Seattle bested all markets in the final round with a 11.4/30, followed by Jacksonville (6.8/12), Columbus (6.7/14), Louisville (6.6/12), and Las Vegas (6.5/13). Overall, the entire tournament on FOX and Fox Sports 1 averaged 3.5 million viewers across both networks. In addition, FOX Sports GO, USOpen.com and the U.S. Open official app saw total live streams started were growing 354% to 5.9 million while total streamed minutes hit 158 million, topping the U.S. Open’s previous high of 130 million minutes in 2012.

ON THE AIR

Time for Wimbledon. ESPN’s coverage of the famed tournament launches on June 29 and 140 hours of TV coverage in the cards heading into the Ladies’ and Doubles Championships on ESPN on Saturday, July 11, and the Gentlemen’s Championship on Sunday, July 12. ESPN3, meanwhile, has slated 1,500 hours overall from 15 courts. The first five weekdays will see ESPN begin coverage at 7a. Breakfast at Wimbledon will launch on July 9 at 7a and run to the Championships.

Meanwhile, Tennis Channel is launching a new preview show Racquet Bracket: Wimbledon, in its eighth year of Wimbledon Primetime coverage. The program bows on Friday at 8p with network analyst Tracy Austin along with special guest James Blake and commentators Leif Shiras and Steve Weissman,. Beginning on Opening Day, Monday, June 29, Tennis Channel will dedicate more than 200 hours to Wimbledon during its nightly three-and-half hour Wimbledon Primetime show.

ESPN detailed plans for the 2015 NBA Draft Presented By State Farm on Thursday at 7p. The telecast will offers viewers a new main set, with Rece Davis in as host and joining and Jay Bilas, Jay Williams and Jalen Rose. Quest Love will get the spotlight during the new production open, offering a voiceover and musical accompaniment.

Speaking of drafts, NBC Sports Group takes on the NHL Draft on Friday at 7p. Liam McHugh hosts coverage alongside Pierre McGuire, Bob McKenzie and Craig Button, while Kathryn Tappen anchors coverage from the floor of the BB&T Center. NBCSN also offers coverage of the 2015 NHL Awards on Wednesday at 7p, with the ceremonies hosted by Rob Riggle.

Spike saw its Bellator MMA bout pitting Kimbo Slice/Ken Shamrock rank as the highest-rated and most-watched Bellator MMA fight ever on the channel, scoring 2.1 million viewers in the 11:45p-12a window on Friday. Overall, the card scored 1.6 million viewers. The previous high was set at Bellator 131 with 1.8 million viewers (live rating) for the Tito Ortiz/Stephan Bonnar fight and 1.2 million viewers overall.

NBC Sports launches coverage of the 102nd Tour de France with the Tour de France Preview Show hosted by Todd Harris tomorrow at 10p on NBCSN. The show will take an in-depth look at the Tour de France and offer interviews and an overview of the race route, profiles of competing cyclists, and historical moments. NBC Sports Group serves as the exclusive rights holder of Tour de France coverage in the U.S. and will provide television coverage on NBC and NBCSN starting July 4 at 7a.

SEC Network hands the programming keys to its schools in what is being dubbed the first “SEC Network Takeover” initiative. The stunt launches June 29 and will see each school choose what airs on the television channel for 24 consecutive hours, from classic games, films, ESPN original content and some school-produced content. Day one belongs to Alabama and will run alphabetically through Vanderbilt on July 12.

The Pac-12 Networks unveiled volleyball plans, lining up 92 matchups on its channels starting Aug. 28 with a doubleheader pitting Texas A&M/Stanford at 6p PT, followed by North Carolia/USC at 8p. Throughout the fall, Pac-12 volleyball anchors the Networks’ primetime lineup on Wednesday and Friday, as well as Sunday’s afternoon schedule.

MSG Networks debuts Knicks Now presented by Dodge starting tomorrow at 8p. The four week series captures “the excitement of the Knicks offseason from their first round pick in the NBA draft through the free agent signing period and the start of Summer League.” The series will be hosted by Al Trautwig with Alan Hahn and Wally Szczerbiak.

The WNBA and New York Liberty announced that that have agreed to suspend Isiah Thomas’ ownership application indefinitely. In a statement, the league wrote that “After further discussion and with the season underway, the WNBA and the New York Liberty have agreed to suspend consideration of Isiah Thomas’ application for an ownership interest in the Liberty until further notice. The process will resume at a future time as determined by the Liberty.” Thomas still serves as president of the team.

Hyundai is reportedly on the cusp of locking in a new deal with the NFL. Bloomberg writes that the car company would replace General Motors and its GMC brand in the role.

Major League Soccer and Heineken officially launched MLS Heineken Rivalry Week with two weeks dedicated to the cross-town and intrastate competitions (the other taking place August 24-30). Heineken will be hosting viewing parties in certain MLS team markets and bring back the Heineken House in NYC, offering live viewing events, a photo exhibit of classic MLS soccer imagery, fan photo booths and other interactive elements. In addition, a short-form content series entitled "Get Me In There!" will launch with host Rachel Bonnetta traveling the country to showcase the fans of MLS clubs.

Van Wagner Sports & Entertainment was hired by NFL UK to exclusively sell its in-game field level television-visible LED signage during this upcoming season’s NFL International Series at Wembley Stadium in London. This marks the first time the NFL has used a partner to provide this sales service.“We are extremely excited about our partnership with NFL UK and look forward to providing our sales expertise. Yesterday saw the Yankees take part in Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month with the club hosting the Alzheimer’s Association at Yankee Stadium to help #Rally2EndALZ. This is the third year that the Yankees have partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association to help bring awareness to the cause and saw a purple ribbon painted on the field. The first 18,000 fans (21+) that entered Yankee Stadium also received a specially designed purple Yankees hat presented by New Era Cap Company while the grounds crew wore specially created Alzheimer’s Association purple T-shirts with #Rally2EndALZ on them during that night’s game.

The PGA of America is hunting for applicants for adult and junior volunteer positions for the 2016 PGA Championship at PGAChampionship.com. More than 3,500 volunteers are needed for its visit to the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey from July 25-31, 2016. “The PGA of America depends on the thousands of devoted and enthusiastic volunteers to make the PGA Championship operate smoothly every year,” said 2016 PGA Championship Director Ryan Cannon. “Volunteering is a great value and a wonderful way to experience the PGA Championship. Whistle Sports named Bob Ciosek as the company’s Chief Creative Officer where he will oversee the company’s research initiatives and creative strategies. Ciosek previously launched Bold Studios and begin his relationship with the company several months ago during a research project around the company’s core audience, researching media consumption habits, purchasing intent and brand affinities. “Our digital community continues to grow and we wanted to ensure we had the expertise at hand to create content that is both authentic to our core audience and presented opportunities for engagement with brands,” CEO and co-founder John West said. “Bob’s extensive knowledge and research on the younger generations are essential to our core offerings.”
