Dish Network Corp. and T-Mobile US Inc. are in merger talks, reports the Wall Street Journal. Dish is the country’s second largest satellite TV operator, and T-Mobile the fourth-largest wireless carrier. The two sides have agreed that Dish’s Charlie Ergen would be chairman of the combo company, and T-Mobile’s John Legere would be CEO. This comes as AT&T is nearing completion of a $49 billion deal for DirecTV; Charter Communications recently announced a deal to acquire Time Warner Cable Inc. for $56 billion.

Stephen Colbert, set to launch CBS’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, September 8, named Jon Batiste as the show’s bandleader. Batiste, whose most recent studio album, Social Music, reached number one on Billboard’s Jazz Album Chart, said, “This is a match made in heaven. Get ready for a love riot in late night.”

Jason Alexander took to Twitter to apologize to Seinfeld love interest Heidi Swedberg (Susan) for telling Howard Stern the cast found working with her “impossible.” “I was on uncertain ground in how to play off that character and I was always concerned it wasn’t working,” said Alexander, who called Swedberg “a sweetheart.” Looking back, “I can see that there was a fun relationship between George and Susan,” added Alexander. “It works perfectly. I simply couldn’t see it or find it at the time.”

Discovery Communications announced the launch of premium video streaming service Dplay in Europe, providing access to live and non-fiction sports coverage. “Building on our leadership in pay-TV channels, which are still growing at a strong pace, we are also aggressively launching digital, direct-to-consumer products in key markets, with a goal of reaching one million subscribers by 2017,” said JB Perrette, president of Discovery Networks International. “With an average of 10 channels in 220 markets, Discovery invests significantly in content, formats and IP to grow market share, extend our reach in new markets and platforms, and nurture our passionate viewers.”Dplay joins Discovery’s Eurosport in the OTT space.

E!’s Botched returns in a new time slot. The doctors are back to work righting plastic surgery wrongs Sundays at 9p.

Cineflix announced the start of production on American Lawmen for American Heroes Channel and Vegas 911 (wt) for Discovery Life.

Rob Thomas signed an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television. Thomas will continue to produce the studio’s iZombie, which he co-created, while his Spondoolie Productions develops projects.
 

COMING UP

Almost five years after their son jumped to his death from the George Washington Bridge after his roommate broadcast his intimate moments with another man, the parents of Tyler Clementi open up to Erin Moriarty on CBS Sunday Morning With Charles Osgood, June 7 at 9a. This week, the Tyler Clementi Foundation is rolling out a campaign, “Day One,” asking people to get up on the first day of work or school and say they’ll never treat others differently because of their faith, sex, dress or looks.

In addition to Shark Week, returning Sunday, July 5, Discovery will air a special weekend of all-new Shark Week programming in August, adding up to 19 hours of prime time Shark Week content. A few shows the net expects to take a bite out of the ratings: Alien Sharks: Close Encounter; Shark Trek; Monster Mako; Sharks of the Shadowland and Shark Island.

Guantanamo’s Child – Omar Khadr airs on Al Jazeera America Monday, June 8 at 8p. Documentary tells the story of Toronto-born Omar Khadr, captured as a 15-year old in Afghanistan and sent to the U.S. detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2002.

Composer Armando Manzanero will host a second season of La Musica con Manzanero, premiering on arts net Canal 22 Internacional Sunday, June 7 at 10p. Manzanero has written and composed over 400 songs performed by artists from Frank Sinatra to Andrea Bocelli.

Highlights from PBS’s fall slate include American Experience: Walt Disney, premiering Monday and Tuesday, September 14-15; new Masterpiece drama “Indian Summers” launching Sunday, September 27, and three-part historical documentary American Epic starting Tuesday, November 10. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the end of the Civil War, PBS will present a re-mastered, high definition version of Ken Burns doc The Civil War, 25 years after its first broadcast.

The premiere of the final season of A&E’s Beyond Scared Straight airs Thursday, June 25 at 9p. “I am so proud of the teenage lives that have been changed and even saved over our 83 episodes and six years of production,” said series creator Arnold Shapiro. The good news: the season nine closer is followed by the series premiere of documentary series American Takedown from exec producer Morgan Spurlock at 10p.

Secret Lives of Americans, completely self-shot by its subjects, offers an unfiltered look at people as they expose secrets (eating disorder, HIV, immigration) to friends, family and significant others. “In a time where people filter their lives for social media, this show peels back the glossy ‘selfies’to reveal the gritty truths individuals are grappling with every day,” said Belisa Balaban, EVP of original programming for Pivot. Premiere date: Friday, June 12 at 10:30p.

Fuse is airing four days of pre-festival programming as part of its “Bonnaroo Binge.” Videos of festival alum and scheduled acts, including Mumford & Sons, Hozier and Childish Gambino, air in Countdown to Bonnaroo June 8-11 from 10a-12p.

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: From Paris with Love premieres Saturday, June 6 at 9p on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, after a Signed, Sealed, Delivered marathon that begins at 9a.

After 14 seasons, TeenNick is sending Degrassi off with a two-week series finale. Event launches with an hour-long special Monday, July 20 at 9p, and premieres airing Monday-Friday at 9p for two weeks. Hour-long special It Goes There: Degrassi’s Most Talked About Moments airs Friday, July 31 at 8p, followed by the series finale.

Counting Cars returns to History Tuesday, June 23 at 9p, followed by newcomer Leepu & Pitbull. New series, focusing on a master mechanic and renowned car designer transforming clunkers, launches at 10p.

Natalie Martinez (Secrets and Lies) has joined the season two cast of DirecTV’s Kingdom as a series regular, and Jessica Szhor (Gossip Girl) will recur. Series has started production in LA.

Spike TV boasts Lip Sync Battle ranked number one in its timeslot in all of cable TV with A18-49 and A18-49 and among all cable entertainment series with M18-49 during its April 2-May 28 run. The series averaged 2.9 million viewers and has improved the network’s timeslot in A8-49 by 161 percent.On hiatus in June, the battles begin 9p again with new eps Thursday, July 9 at 10p.

Cooking Channel had its most watched May in network history with viewership in prime at its highest ever among P25-54 (up 14 percent year over year) and W25-54 (up 15 percent). Helping matters: season two of Rev Run’s Sunday Suppers (up 65 percent among W25-54 and up 51 percent in P25-54) and season one of Tia Mowry at Home (up 139 percent W25-54 and 100 percent P25-54).

The season six premiere of ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars was Tuesday’s number one telecast in W18-34 (785,000) and Females 12-34 (1.2 million), cable TV’s number one telecast in Prime in A18-34 (945,000), Viewers 12-34 (1.4 million) and W18-49 (1.1 million) and was the top scripted Prime telecast across all cable TV in A18-49 (1.3 million). The drama swept its cable TV time period, ranking number one in total viewers (2.4 million).

The launch of ABC Family’s Stitchers on Tuesday was cable top scripted drama in its 9p time slot in target demos, drawing 414,000 viewers A18-34, 668,000 among A18-49, 471,000 among W18-49 and 597,000 Viewers 12-34.

Megyn Kelly’s interview on Wednesday with 19 Kids and Counting parents Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar delivered 3.1 million total viewers and 866,000 among A25-54 for Fox NewsKelly File, up 34 percent in viewers and 124 percent in the demo versus the same day last week.

Fox’s Bullseye held onto its 1.1 premiere rating on Wednesday. New CBS series The Briefcase dipped .4 to .9/4 week to week, but was tops in total viewers.
