Syfy and Amblin Entertainment are reteaming to develop Aldous Huxley classic Brave New World as a scripted series for Syfy. Previously, Syfy and Amblin collaborated on Steven Spielberg Presents: Taken, which won a 2003 Emmy for Best Miniseries. Net president Dave Howe said the project promises to be “a monumental television event…precisely the groundbreaking programming that is becoming the hallmark of Syfy.” Universal Cable Productions will serve as the studio.

IN THE NEWS

Former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw’s fight against cancer will be the focus of a Dateline special tomorrow, May 7 at 10p. Brokaw opens up about his challenges since being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a treatable but incurable blood cancer that he announced in December is in remission. Brokaw’s new book, “A Lucky Life, Interrupted: A Memoir of Hope” has a May 12 release date.

USA launched on Apple TV, the first of the NBCUniversal sibs to take a bite after the launch of NBC Sports Live Extra. It’s “part of our ongoing strategy to reach consumers on all platforms,” said USA SVP of digital, Jeffrey Kaufman. The move comes ahead of the launch of the net’s summer slate, including thriller Complications, bowing Thursday, June 18 at 9p and hacker drama Mr. Robot, launching Wednesday, June 24 at 10p.

Discovery Communications reported revenue was up nine percent in 1Q15 versus year ago, with 10 percent growth internationally and 6 percent in the U.S. Said president and CEO David Zaslav, “2015 is off to a great start, as our strategy of investing in and owning world-class content… continues to drive operating momentum.” Zaslav also let slip that the company is taking a fresh approach in Turkey. “It doesn’t have enough pay-TV, so that’s a market where we’re going free-to-air as well as pay,” said Zaslav. “We think we’ll get pretty meaningful, incremental value from that.”

A day after Al Jazeera America issued press release in which CEO Ehab Al Shihabi called reports about intolerance and gender bias “absurd,” senior vice president of outreach Marcy McGinnis resigned. Saying in an email that Shihabi reminded senior staff that if they could not support the decisions of the network they would be “welcome to leave,” McGinnis explained, “I find myself at that crossroads now and so have decided to resign.”

TLC brings its “Say Yes to the Prom” tour to LA today. Monte Durham, star of the net’s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta will host the day’s events, designed to build courage and self-confidence in young women, at the BCBG corporate headquarters. Joyce Azria, Creative Director for BCBGeneration, and Edwina Findley Dickerson, star of OWN’s If Loving You Is Wrong, will also be on hand.

AT INTX

Addressing head-on what could have been an elephant in the room, Comcast chairman/CEO Brian Roberts said during the opening session his company is totally over the failed merger with Time Warner Cable. “We are really moving on,” he said, accentuating his point by showing a video of an explosion scene from Furious 7 as part of a demo of new voice controls for the X1 operating system.

Quote of the day goes to Julie Piepenkotter, EVP, research, at FX Networks, who said today’s lagging measurement data leads to what she calls “datagasm.” Noting overnight ratings no longer tell the story, she said, “We start seeing the viewership pouring in through DVR” and other time-shifted viewing and say, “Oh, there it is… it just took a while to get there.”
