CYNOPSIS
04.20.15

Good morning. It’s Monday April 20, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Azteca America: La Prepago at 10p
GSN: Lie Detectors at 6:30p
Nat Geo: Star Talk at 11p
Travel: Time Traveling With Brian Unger at 10p
VH1: Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta at 8p, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta: The After Party Live! at 9p

Tonight’s Finales:
CBS: Scorpion at 9p
Telemundo: Duenos del Paraiso at 10p

After word got out that Verizon FiOS was launching no-contract, skinny bundle Custom TV, ESPN threw a flag on the play. Verizon’s offering: a “Base” package for $54.99/month with 36 channels, including broadcast, CNN, HGTV, AMC and Food Network, but not ESPN, plus two out of seven other genre-based “Channel Packs” in categories including Sports, Lifestyle, News & Info, Pop Culture and Entertainment. Said Disney-owned ESPN, “Media reports about Verizon’s new contemplated bundles describe packages that would not be authorized by our existing agreements. Among other issues, our contracts clearly provide that neither ESPN nor ESPN2 may be distributed in a separate sports package.”

IN THE NEWS

A decision is imminent regarding Comcast’s bid to buy Time Warner Cable, according to Bloomberg, which reported Friday that attorneys examining the $45.2 billion deal are leaning against the proposed merger. On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal said the companies have a Wednesday meeting set with officials from the U.S. Department of Justice to address concerns. The report that the acquisition will likely be blocked doesn’t come as a surprise to Richard Greenfield, managing editor and media analyst at BTIG. “We continue to believe the transaction odds are at best 30 percent, given the government’s building concern around the broadband market share,” Greenfield tells Cynopsis.

As ABC’s Cristela teetered on the renewal bubble Friday night, creator and star Cristela Alonzo addressed the show’s possible cancellation in her blog. “If the show ends and tonight’s season finale is the last episode the world gets to see, just know that this show gave opportunities to Latino writers and actors that are hard to come by,” wrote Alonzo. As for the complaint that all Latino families are not like those portrayed in the show, Alonzo pointed out, “That’s why the show is called Cristela and not Every Latino Family.” Finale drew .9/4 among A18-49, according to early Nielsens, down from 1.3/5 for the show’s October premiere.

Former MLB star and team manager Pete Rose will appear as a guest analyst for baseball on Fox and Fox Sports 1. Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader, was banned from the game in 1989 for gambling, but his job at Fox, an MLB broadcast partner, is allowed under the ruling. “As a courtesy, Fox informed us that they were interviewing Pete Rose for an in-studio position,” Pat Courtney, baseball’s chief communications officer, told FoxSports.com. “The decision to hire on-air talent for its telecasts rests solely with Fox.” With new baseball commissioner Rob Manfred in town, Rose is lobbying for a lift on the ban.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will appear on an episode of NBC medical drama Night Shift in support of the Joining Forces initiative, promoting health resources for veterans. Segment airs Monday, May 4 at 10p.

Blame the 2016 Presidential election for Jon Stewart’s decision to vacate his Daily Show desk after 16 years. In an interview with UK’s The Guardian that appeared on Saturday, the Comedy Central host said, “Honestly, it was a combination of the limitations of my brain and a format that is geared towards following an increasingly redundant process, which is our political process. I was just thinking, ‘Are there other ways to skin this cat?’…I’d covered an election four times, and it didn’t appear that there was going to be anything wildly different about this one.”

Sharks won’t just be terrorizing D.C. this summer. Syfy’s Sharknado pack will take a bite out of Riverdale, comic book home of Archie, Betty and Veronica, too. Archie Vs. Sharknado will be released in comic stores and digitally on Wednesday, July 22, the day Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! lands onscreen.

ESPN reporter Britt McHenry was suspended for a week after a video surfaced showing her berating a towing company clerk, insulting the woman’s weight, education and teeth, among other things. Said McHenry, “As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road. I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from my mistake.”

My 600-lb Life will make it to season four on TLC. The third installment of the series, following the transformational journeys of morbidly obese people, was its highest ever, averaging a 1.2 among W25-54.

WAPA Television secured rights to air the 2016 Miss Universe Puerto Rico pageant. The November 12 competition will broadcast live on WAPA in Puerto Rico, and in the U.S. on WAPA America.

CANCELLED

Univision
variety series Sabado Gigante will come to an end on September 19, after a 53-year (!) run. Host Mario Kreutzberger stays with the net for TV specials and to help cultivate new talent. The series moved to Univision in 1986 from Chile’s Canal 13.

Actress Victoria Justice announced via Twitter on Saturday that her MTV series, Eye Candy, has been cancelled after one season. “Even though a lot of you are going to feel sad/angry,” said Justice, “please know that playing Lindy Sampson is something that I loved and will hold dear to my heart.”

WE tv cancelled Sex Box (couples in crisis have sex, then talk about their relationship) five episodes into its planned nine-ep run. “Sex Box was a bold programming swing that broke new ground but did not connect with viewers,” said the net in a statement. “We are working with our production partners on a potential reformatted version.” The show, which premiered to 490,000 viewers in Live+3, had Parents Television Council urging advertisers to steer clear.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

Cable nets saw a 1 percent uptick in ad revenues in March versus the same month last year, and broadcast held steady, according to Standard Media Index. The numbers include a 43 percent improvement in scatter dollar revenue growth for broadcast; cable was flat for the month.
