Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people included a diverse list from the world of television, including Lorne Michaels, Kim Kardashian, John Oliver, Lee Daniels, Laverne Cox, Jorge Ramos, Kevin Hart, Julianna Margulies and Jill Soloway. Of Ramos, a news anchor on both Fusion and Univision, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour said, he “knows he has a voice and is not afraid to use it.” So does Kardashian, points out Martha Stewart, at least to amass an audience. “She has 29 million followers on Instagram and 31 followers on Twitter, and her E! show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians is considered appointment TV,” noted the domestic doyenne.

IN THE NEWS

Nathan Fillion has re-upped with Castle for an eighth season, pending an official pickup by ABC, but showrunner David Amann, who took the reins last year from Andrew Marlowe, will not be back. Fillion’s co-star, Stana Katic, has not yet re-signed with the detective show, airing its season finale Monday, May 11 at 10p.

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly said he was “caught by surprise” by reports in February accusing him of misrepresenting events during the Falklands War. “I was an idiot for not being prepared for it before a presidential election,” O’Reilly told the LA Times. As for Brian Williams, in the midst of a six-month suspension for misreporting, O’Reilly predicts a return for NBC Nightly News anchor. “America is a forgiving country,” said O’Reilly. “The pundits may not be, and the ideologues may not be. But the folks are…You find a guy with recognition and talent, you find a place for him.”

Entertainment winners of the 74th annual Peabody Awards, announced Thursday, included SundanceTV’s The Honorable Woman and Rectify, FX’s The Americans and Fargo, Cinemax’s The Knick, HBO late nighter Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, CW’s Jane the Virgin and British anthology Black Mirror. Ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in NYC will be held May 31, and air on Pivot Sunday, June 21 at 9p.

FX Networks grabbed television rights to blockbuster Furious 7 for FX, FXX and FM, along with The Longest Ride, Taken 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Home.

What’s your prediction for Upfronts – better or worse than last year? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

Viewers may spending less time in front of the television, but they’re watching more video than ever, according to a new report from eMarketer. U.S. adults will spend an average 5 hours, 31 minutes per day watching video this year, up six minutes from a year ago. Time with digital increased by 13 minutes, to one hour, 16 minutes, while TV viewing decreased seven minutes, to four hours, 15 minutes. “The increase in overall screen time highlights the complexity of today’s media ecosystem,” said Paul Verna, senior analyst at eMarketer. “While so much debate has centered on a supposed tug-of-war between TV and digital video, the reality is that digital video is growing not at the expense of TV, but because video content is more popular than ever.”

The X Factor UK has been renewed by AXS TV for a second year, bringing season 12 of the singing competition to the U.S. within 24 hours of its broadcast across the pond. Series was created by Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertaiment; Cowell returns as judge.

LAFF launched Wednesday with the addition of all six seasons of Spin City to a sitcom lineup that includes The Drew Carey Show, Night Court and Empty Nest, among others. The Katz Broadcasting net is available in half the country, including 18 of the top 25 markets.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO gave a series order to Sarah Jessica Parker comedy Divorce, about the uncoupling of a husband and wife played by Parker and Thomas Haden Church (Wings). Parker will exec produce through her Pretty Matches Productions. Aaron Kaplan, Paul Simms and Alison Benson will also exec produce, with Sharon Horgan, who wrote the script, serving as showrunner.

Production on season two of WGN America’s Manhattan has begun in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Drama from Lionsgate Television, Skydance Television and Tribune Studios will premiere in the fall.

Starz comedy Survivor’s Remorse is back in production, filming season two in Atlanta. Series comes from basketball star LeBron James, Tom Werner, Mike O’Malley, Maverick Carter, Victor Levin, Paul Wachter and Hilton Smith.

RFD-TV, “rural America’s most important network,” has a new look and live production capabilities, thanks to state-of-the-art new studios. “Our new look stays true to rural America’s roots,” said Patrick Gottsch, founder of the net, “while the set design and technology shows how we will grow and thrive in the future, as we connect city and country.” RFD-TV reaches nearly 50 million homes.

Universal Cable Productions and Mexican media company Televisa entered into a co-production deal for two dramas, based on the 1970s Mexican comic book Pantera, and Argentinian format Allies. Both are “unique and powerful stories, neither of which currently exist on television,” said Dawn Olmstead, EVP, development at UCP.

COMING UP

American Heroes Channel documentary Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary premieres Saturday, April 18 at 10p. “As the world reflects on major historical events, AHC has become the home for viewers looking to honor the past with narrative-style documentary programming that puts history in context,” Henry Schleiff, Group President at Discovery Communications, tells Cynopsis. “AHC was proud to commemorate the seminal 70th anniversary of the end of WWII through a partnership with Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation that brought Schindler’s List to our air in January, without any commercial interruption. Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary sheds light on the author of one of the world’s most famous pieces of literature through the remarkable first-person story of the stepsister she hardly knew.”

Exclusive: AHC’s week-long “Countdown to Victory” primetime programming stunt, also part of the net’s effort to honor the anniversary of the end of WWII, begins Monday, May 4, headlined by the premiere of 90-minute doc, Surrender: The Fall of the Reich at 9p.

Seasons 2-4 of BBC sci-fi drama Dr. Who will run on Disney XD. A preview airing on Saturday, May 9 at 9p kicks things off, with more episodes rolling out starting Saturday, June 13.

The series premiere of Discovery’s Unearthed surfaces Friday May 1 at 10p, featuring truffle foragers battling Mother Nature.

Wall Street Week (1972-2005) is being revived by SkyBridge founder Anthony Scaramucci, airing on Fox Sunday mornings in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and D.C. starting this weekend. Who’ll wake up Sundays wanting money talk? “The Wall Street Week target audience are engaged viewers seeking a higher level of insight and analysis around wealth,” Scaramucci tells Cynopsis. Specifically: investors, financial professionals, corporate execs and entrepreneurs from the A25-54 demo.

Two episodes make up hour-long I Love Lucy Superstar Special, airing on CBS Sunday, May 17 at 8p. Like the net’s Christmas Lucy specials, the eps are “newly colorized with a vintage look.” Included is material from “L.A. at Last!” that has not been broadcast since it first aired in 1955.

The new season of Pivot’s Angry Planet launches tonight at 10p with an exploration of climate change in Australia. Scenes include firefighters battling one of the biggest bushfires in recent years.

Inside Comedy, the documentary series from David Steinberg and Steve Carell, returns for season four on Tuesday, May 5 at 11p. Guests on deck: Stephen Colbert, Ted Danson, Bryan Cranston, Conan O’Brien and Jeffrey Tambor, among others.

Among those added to an eclectic list of presenters for the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards, airing Sunday, April 19 at 8p on CBS: Dallas Cowboys stars Troy Aiken, Tony Romo and Jason Witten, Beth Behrs (2 Broke Girls), Dr. Phil McGraw, Reese Witherspoon, Steven Tyler and Miss America 2015 Kira Kazantsev.

Presenters set for the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys on Pop include Criminal MindsShemar Moore (who picked up a trophy himself in 2000 for his work on The Young and the Restless), Regis Philbin, Steve Harvey, Marie Osmond, Craig Ferguson, Nancy O’Dell and Alex Trebek, along with a constellation of stars from the four daytime soaps. Ceremony airs Sunday, April 26 at 8p.

CASTING

British actors David Harewood (Homeland), Neil Morrissey (Line of Duty), Katherine Kelly (Mr Selfridge) and Tobias Menzies (The Honorable Woman) joined the cast of AMC’s The Night Manager, co-produced with BBC One and The Ink Factory.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Get off television, Sen. Barbara Boxer urged e-cigarette makers in a letter to executives at NJOY, Lorillard, LOGIC, Altria Group and Reynolds. “Many e-cigarette advertisements currently on air make clear companies are trying to target a wider audience than what many in your industry claim is the intended market: those who are looking to quit smoking,” wrote the Democrat from California. “For nearly 45 years, manufacturers of traditional cigarettes have agreed to a ban on television advertising. I merely ask that you restrict advertising of e-cigarettes in the same manner.” In February, Boxer re-introduced the Protecting Children from Electronic Cigarette Advertising Act, which would allow the FTC to enforce a ban.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Television Dominicana, targeting the Dominican community living in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, launched on DISH Puerto Rico. The net is available on channel 844 of DishLATINO’s ‘Basico,’ ‘Clasico,’ ‘Plus,’ ‘Dos,’ and ‘Max’ packages.

INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS

Turkey’s OttO Productions acquired the rights to Armoza Formats game show Only One Knows, being distributed as part of a strategic partnership with TVA.
